NEW: @GovofCO Polis says Colorado expects 100-200k doses of Pfizer vaccine in 2020. Most Coloradans can be vaccinated early in 2021, Polis said. Will thread new details from briefing here. Live feed: 9news.com/article/news/h… #9NEWS #COVID19colorado
"This is going to get worse before it gets better," Polis said, stressing that virus is more prevalent in Colorado than during spring peak. Urges Coloradans to practice social distancing with the "finish line" in sight.
NEW: Gov Polis announces another 30-day extension of statewide mask mandate. "Masks are not as effective as a vaccine, but they're in the 50-70% range," Polis said. #9NEWS #COVID19colorado
Reminder that Colorado's first vaccine doses go to "healthcare workers, firefighters, emergency medical services, police officers and critical public health personnel." Distribution plan here -> 9news.com/article/news/h…
Polis says the state is working to launch testing vans that can be deployed to hot spots around Colorado. Says state currently has 80 testing locations.
This is my first Polis presser thread in a while. Just a quick reminder to the Jane and Johnny Bunchanumbers out there that I am not responsible for Polis' positions and policies. Enjoy!
Polis says if Coloradans restrict social gatherings in the weeks to come, we "likely won't" need overflow medical facilities (like the vastly-scaled-back Convention Center field hospital).
NEW: "State employees, with limited exceptions, will be working remotely through the end of November," Polis announces, urging private sector employers to "follow suit for the next month or two." #9NEWS #COVID19colorado
"Apparently there were people sitting around not wearing masks waiting for Governor Polis to tell them," Polis says, sarcastically, I think. Tough to tell. I dunno. This isn't tough. Wear a mask. Don't be sprayin' your droplets on everyone like a supermarket produce mister.
"If you live alone, just pick two or three people to be part of your bubble for the next few weeks," Polis says. It's closing time at the bar, basically.
.@MGoodland, who always brings the heat, asks Polis what tools he has short of a statewide stay at home order. Asks if there's anything else at his disposal. Polis points to state effort to expand testing. "What's on you (the public)? The rest of it," Polis said.
Grand Junction journo @OldNewsman asks about the prevalence of anti-vaxxers on the Western Slope. Polis says he's not concerned about anti-vaxxers refusing to get the COVID vaccine. "Everybody doesn't need to get it," Polis said. "We need to reach 70-80%."
NEW: Gov Polis asked whether he's asking Coloradans to skip holiday gatherings. "The best advice would be to self-quarantine for 10 days prior to having that Thanksgiving," Polis said. #9NEWS #COVID19colorado
.@chrisvanderveen asks @GovofCO Polis where he's getting his specific info on 100k-200k doses of vaccine to Colorado by year's end. Polis says the info is from Pfizer and Colorado's share of the national population.
"Over 1,000 of our fellow Coloradans are in the hospital," Polis concludes. "It's a tough time."
"Now is the time to buckle down," Polis said. This is where I used to say, "Mask on, Polis out." But these conferences are remote. So he just clicks and it brings up this screen. Kinda anticlimactic if you ask me. Image
Oh, I forgot one other key quote from the presser. When asked about people changing habits to reduce the spread in the coming weeks, Polis said "Together we can save Christmas." It had a Hallmark movie kind of vibe to it, albeit sorta monotone. I'll probably play it on #HeyNext.

Here's an idea how we can make a real difference during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. @SafeHseDenver runs an emergency shelter and a 24/7 crisis line to strategize how to escape violence. They lost $42,000 in victim assistance fee funding when courts closed due to COVID...
#HeyNext viewers support a non-profit each week via the Word of Thanks microgiving campaign. Do you think we could come up with enough $5 donations to cover SafeHouse Denver's funding gap? I'll match the first 50 $5 gifts & @SteveStaeger has the next 50: classy.org/fundraiser/295…
Since Wednesday, #HeyNext viewers have donated $26,599 of the $42,000 needed by Safehouse Denver. You can check the rolling total at the link in this thread. If you're able to give $5, thank you! If you can share this, thank you!

The racism isn’t surprising anymore but it still gives me pause to see the sheer number of Americans willing to be captured on camera cheering racism.
The lasting memory I have from The National Museum of African American History and Culture are the photos of Black children being screamed at by white adults. Wondering what kind of lives the children went on to lead. And whether the adults and their descendants are horrified.
So it stuns me that, generations later, there are so many more Americans who want to be captured in images cheering racism. And I wonder what they will think decades from now. And what their children will think if they ever see those images.

Suicide is the leading cause of death of youth in Colorado. Connecting kids to therapists quickly is challenging with some schools on remote learning. That's why #HeyNext viewers are supporting The Second Wind Fund through our Word of Thanks microgiving campaign. $46,000+ so far. Image
Second Wind Fund ensures young people at-risk for suicide quickly get treatment without red tape or huge bills. Second Wind Fund estimates that $1,000 in donations can save a kid's life. As always, I'll match the first 50 $5 donations here: coloradogives.org/SWFsavealife
Suicide prevention is one of the causes most often suggested by Next viewers since we started the Word of Thanks microgiving campaign in June.

No kid is ever lunch-shamed in Greeley-Evans District 6. If they don't have lunch money, they're given the same lunch as their classmates. The unpaid student lunch debt in Colorado's 12th largest school district was $147,819. Until #HeyNext viewers got involved this week. Image
The Greeley-Evans school district has decided not to hound families to pay off their lunch debts right now due to the economy and the pandemic. But if the district can't collect, that money will likely have to come out of the general fund. In a high-need district, that's hard. Image
This week, #HeyNext's Word of Thanks microgiving campaign is helping Greeley-Evans schools' foundation @d6success pay off as much lunch debt as possible, so families don't have to worry about it hanging over them year after year. Since Wednesday, viewers have given $50,000+! Image

We said goodbye to the sweetest boy, Porter, a year ago this week. Every beloved pet deserves the vet care he had - so this week’s Word of Thanks microgiving campaign on #HeyNext supports Denver’s low-cost vet clinic where people and pets line up before dawn hoping to be seen. Image
More than 5,000 pets a year receive treatment at @DDFL’s Solutions Veterinary Hospital. People pay what they can. Some bring cards and homemade food if that’s all they can offer. The goal is to prevent pets from being surrendered or euthanized due to their owner’s finances. Image
DDFL operates the low-cost clinic at a loss each year and they estimate they are only able to meet 5% of Denver’s need for low-cost vet care. Would you consider joining me and #HeyNext viewers so they can help more pets? Donate here: nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2… Image
