Short thread on pardons

Trump knows he can pardon. BUT he also knows the pitfalls. First, foremost, if Trump pardons someone, that person cannot use the Fifth Amendment as a shield in testimony. Not in courts, not in Congressional hearings. If Trump wants to HIDE evidence...

Trump has DANGLED pardons with his Trumpomobsters continuously. He occasionally pardons random other people, just to REMIND those near him, that he has the pardoning power. But what Trump wants is loyalty. If he pardons someone, they're 'free' of Trump

After any pardon, that person will NOT want to get into NEW crimes WITH TRUMP. So Trump's 'slave' is immediately freed, if Trump signs that pardon. All loyalty vanishes. I am pretty sure Trump understands this. So he uses the pardon as a promised reward

So Trump incentive is to WITHOLD the pardon till the last moment. And before that moment, to demand ever more outrageous acts of 'loyalty' to Trump. This produces a vicious cycle getting the victim into ever worse mess (see Giuliani, Barr, Lindsey Graham)

IF Trump were to pardon anyone, I do think he won't do it until 19 January 2021. BUT Trump will demand 'acts of loyalty' regularly before that, which become ever more obscene.

THEN when Trump is out, he GAINS nothing from his troops (whether pardoned or not)

THIS sets up an incentive for Trump to demand ridiculous things; for his minions now to be forced to comply; and for Trump to never pardon them in the end, anyway. IF at any point they quit doing what Trump asked, he'll take revenge and certainly not pardon

I believe Trump in the end will only pardon his kids, himself, MAYBE 1 or 2 most loyal of his team (Stephen Miller). I am guessing all others will be utterly betrayed by the promised pardon that never arrived

BUT, it could also be Trump's way to screw all..

But it could be Trump's way to screw everything by pardoning a hundred people on 19 January, to mess up the aftermath.

The more Trump can be convinced that HE goes to prison anyway, the less he has interest to pardon his subordinates, out of simple jealousy

On Trump takeover of the Pentagon.

Esper was about to resign, when Trump fired him. So this was NO surprise to Esper. Consider its timing & election. Esper felt it his duty to USA to wait past the election, until he was to resign. It tells us 2 things

1 - Esper wanted out Image
and 2 - Esper felt it NECESSARY to stay till election day

That tells us, Trump had been floating MAD ideas to try to win the election using the military. Most likely 'bomb Iran' and possibly even 'nuke Iran'. Also other madness like deploying US troops domestically in US cities Image
Because Esper had TIME before he left, he has BRIEFED his underlings on the likely scenarios. They are all career officers, Generals, who know fully well what is a lawful & what unlawful order (Nazi Germany 'I was just following orders' defense at Nurenburg trials for war crimes)

You remember the most vile American ever to have lived? Manafort. He arranged the kleptocracies in countries on four continents. He was the go-to guy for Marcos, Mobutu Sese Seko & Yanukovich, etc - murderer dictator monsters FAR FAR more horrid (in their countries) than Trump
In each case, Manafort organized the LARGEST heist of public property & government funds into pockets of the dictators, that DECIMATED those countries - often for DECADES to come.

That was a 'young Manafort' before he got his hands onto the biggest piggy-bank ever: USA
