If you haven't, do watch Nero's Guests. A documentary that should be essential viewing for times like these.
It concludes with P Sainath's speech where he shares a piece of ancient history involving Nero, the infamous emperor of Rome.

#Thread
When Rome burnt and Nero could not control the fire, he decided to throw a huge party to deflect attention from the fire. But there was no provision to illuminate the huge garden that was supposed to accommodate the laundry list of invitees. Which is when Nero had an idea.
He summoned convicts from the Roman jail, particularly the ones about to be hanged or imprisoned for life, and burnt them alive in the periphery of the garden. The fire ensured there was no absence of light, and the party went on without any difficulties.

Exactly 14 yrs ago happened the brutal caste atrocity at Khairlanji. A Dalit woman & her daughter were paraded naked, raped & killed.

Today, another Dalit teen dies because of similar atrocity. And her grieving family is humiliated instead of being treated with dignity.
#Hathras
In the Khairlanji case, the Bhandara court had ruled out the caste angle. The Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court said it isn't the rarest of rare case.

14 years later, people are explaining what caste atrocity means to journalists on twitter.
#Hathras
The only one that survived the Khairlanji massacre was Bhaiyyalal Bhotmange. His entire family was wiped out. He died of a heart attack in 2017, waiting for justice as this story points out

"Modi sarkar, Murdabad."

Farmers in different corners of Maharashtra are protesting the #FarmBills2020.

This, in Nandurbar.
Farmers are protesting the best thing that could've happened to them. Apparently, everybody knows more about farming than farmers themselves.

This, in Solapur.
#FarmBills2020
In Nanded, farmers are symbolically burning the #FarmBills2020.

Always have mixed feelings when the people I write about get help from readers.

This week, a good samaritan reached out with groceries to135 families in two villages of Palghar that I had reported from.
While it is heartening to see the people you featured receive some relief, this isn't how things should be.

I reported from two villages and highlighted the issue of malnutrition across the district. There are 30 lakh people in Palghar.
This kept gnawing at me even during the migrant exodus. The workers that featured in our stories got some help.

It was a matter of chance that we spoke to X and not Y. This isn't fair.

I bet you didn't know about a farm agitation from a couple of days back in Solapur.

Here's what happened:-

A sugar factory owes about Rs. 30 crore to its sugarcane farmers for the past four years. Double the amount of what Rhea was falsely accused of siphoning.
The factory also owes Rs. 8 crore to its workers and retired employees.

Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatna gathered over hundred farmers and staged a one day protest in front of the factory.

The factory is run by Ranjitsinh Mohite-Patil, who defected to BJP from NCP in 2019.
Ranjitsinh belongs to the influential Mohite-Patil family.

His grandfather, Shankarrao, is credited with starting the cooperative movement in drought prone Solapur district.

His father, Vijaysinh, is with NCP, and is the former Deputy CM of Maharashtra

The media hounding of #RheaChakraborty and the voyeurism with which the public is following it is suggestive of the warped understanding of justice that we as a society have acquired.

#Thread
The entire discourse reminds me of a prophetic scene from Tarentino's Hateful Eight, where a hangman explains the difference between justice and frontier justice.

The hangman is interacting with someone accused of murder.
If you're found guilty after trial, the hangman says, you would be hanged in a town square and I will perform the execution as a hangman. "That's what civilzed society calls JUSTICE," he says.
