UK will drop all barriers to european immigration to UK next year.
You think this sounds crazy, right?
Well here’s why...
2/
It’s always worth looking at things which “pass under the radar” - especially when big events are happening elsewhere.
So what’s happened is this:
Over the course of the year the UK govt believes 800 000 mostly foreign born people have left UK.
Think about that figure....
3/
It suits govt to believe this is due entirely to COVID but this seems implausible.
But even if true it doesn’t make much difference.
This is in fact at a level that is equivalent to an historical episode of war depopulation.
It’s huge.
But we haven’t noticed cause of COVID.
4/
Given that stats show Europeans are down and the only really migration is from nonEU - it’s a pretty safe bet to say hundreds of thousands of EUers have fled UK.
We know the age structure of EUers in UK is heavily geared to working age with few pensioners.
So what next...
5/
As Ive banged on for years the worst things about Brexit is UK got migration debate all wrong.
EU states are 1st world & mostly well governed pleasant places there is a incentive to use UK to get skills, experience & cash. If you like it you stay but many retire back “home”.
7/
In effect UK “churned” already (expensively) educated EUers for their work knowing many would return home to have kids (expensive) or retire (old people healthcare is expensive).
This is why the UK effectively threw away their hardest manifesto commitments on migration.
8/
A coronavirus EUer depopulation of UK is thus a major economic headache - but if many of these people have given up their rights & are unsure on furlough etc if they’ve already left- they won’t come back.
So how do you get them to return?
You make it easy.
Which is why..
9/
The UK govt has already trashed the income threshold scheme.
Nobody really noticed because of Coronavirus - but why now?
In the middle of a pandemic?
I’ll tell you why.
Govt are panicking they won’t be able hold the people here let alone attract back those already gone.
10/
So as - hopefully - COVID is sorted sometime next year with vaccines the depopulation of UK EUers gets clearer. UK will want the students back, the remote workers to be able to visit UK & it’ll not want less housing demand to hit house prices.
There’s only one solution...
11/
Let EUers in.
It’s the only option that makes any sense. We’re talking millions of forms otherwise processed by whom? Why?
So don’t be surprised if this time next year there’s - whisper it quietly - freedom of movement from EU to UK

Biden transition team provides read-outs of the 4 countries Joe Biden has calls with post election confirmation.
While these are traditionally kept as bland subjects rather than details - it’s worth noting importance Biden team attaches to N. Ireland & GFA agreement.
Its as if @prospect_clark has completely forgotten the endless "There's no thing as soft Brexit" debates, articles, speeches.
I like Tom - but when people come out with ths guff I truly start to wonder if they've actually been present in UK the last 4 years.
3/
Indeed for a large chunk of the period 2016-19 (& the reason I gave up on soft Brexit) was much Conservative party/media were actually more hostile to soft Brexit than many of them were to 2nd referendum.
Soft Brexit was constantly denigrated as the worst of both worlds.
Donald Trump will now spend election night not - as convention dictates - at an independent party...but at the White House.
Speculation is that Trump believes - in the case of a narrow defeat - it will be harder for him to be forcibly removed from White House.
2/
This is important as convention dictates that the outgoing president has already graciously conceded relatively soon after election..even if he remains at WH during the transition.
Clear that Trump may have another strategy.
3/
That’s why presidents always spend election night away from White House - it’s a party event - not a head of state or presidential one.
But if the president announces from the White House that he’s been re-elected it becomes at “act of state” to remove him.
