pst what's a good movie to watch tonight -R
specifying GOOD movies really narrows the playing field doesn't it -R
I have heard nothing but good things about this movie. Several of these good things were spoilers. LET'S GET INTO IT
I am immediately envious of this house
damn, I have never seen a movie subvert the "dropping tray in surprise" trope
"Hi Walt."
"Hi Marta, it's Walt."
"…Mm."

Guessing they don't listen to her very much
rich people love calling people "kiddo"
did the piano soundtrack only kick in after detective number two hit a key on the piano?
ahh, every child putting themself at their father's right hand during the big birthday bash, right off the bat we're prepped for unreliable narrators
also interesting that their accounts don't ENTIRELY spin things in their favor, like this obnoxious dancing lady pulling a disgruntled linda out of her chair
oh lord I have relatives like these
fortunately I'm like 85% sure most of them don't use twitter
"Family's from ecuador"
"Family's from paraguay"
I actually said "ohhh my god" out loud when they hit me with that hamilton reference
so walt is purposefully set up as the prime suspect, with his craggy bond-villain vibe and his big swingin motive
this nonlinear storytelling is really working for me when it usually doesn't because it's putting a big picture together in a clear, comprehensive way, even though it's a bit complicated on paper
acting like a bad liar is hard as hell, props to richard's actor
none of these people are written to be likeable, obviously, but I'm really liking Linda for some reason
oh yeah a slit throat is a VERY normal open-and-shut suicide method, thank you detective mcdingus
I really like how this story weaves the threads together a little at a time, so we already know the three kids are sus for various reasons but we don't know why marda is so skittish just yet
frankly at this point I'm amazed linda DIDN'T murder her family
awwwww we finally get to see how harlan and marda get along without the rest of the fam and it's beautiful
"Ransom. There is so much of me in that kid," he says as a kife slides into frame 👀
oh lord, the movie lulled me into a false sense of security with all this fun Clue shenanigans and now it's got my actual palms sweatings with the mounting tension of the med-swapping scene
the only thing he cared about before was fixing his family and making up for his failings, and now he has six minutes left he's doing everything he can to help marta's family, because to him, she really IS family
lying by omission is the best kind of lying because it's technically not lying
wOW this family politics conversation hurts
"marta come over here I need to use you as a living example of the legal immigration system so I can win an argument"
seems like everyone was outvoted about the whole funeral thing, how mysterious
ahh, charitable actions are so easy when you can be cavalier with your inheritance
I love this absolute cartoon character of a detective and I want to see him in more things
the rest of this movie is so goofy and then there's Marta living out a psychological horror
this dramatic irony is interesting, since as far as we know Marta is actively covering up her own crime mid-investigation, and yet we're drawn to root for her anyway
Chris Evans has been typecast as a sweet handsome guy so much, playing a dickhead must've been such a party
Meg is also interesting because I feel like her characterization is essentially the performative kindness of privilege
"YOU WANNA GO?"
*aggressive slapping*
anyway meg's whole thing is interesting because she's a kind, compassionate lefty who's been the most unconditionally nice to Marta, but I know that everyone in this family is a hot mess in their own way and I feel like her kindness is entirely conditional on her cushy life
it's very easy to be flippant and cruel if the complexities of life and politics are theoretical to you, but it's equally easy to be casually kind for the same reasons - and they're equally fragile since they're conditional on a worldview based on simplicity and comfort
harlan's like "okay marta I want you to be happy and comfortable and not arrested for murder, here's literally everything I own and the ire of my entire extended family"
linda you're losing me girl
knives out, or its alternate subtitle, marta and the terrible horrible no good very bad day
ooooooh clever movie, ransom's an absolute piece of shit but he's entirely turning his shitheadery on his equally shitty family and helping out marta and it makes us instantly sympathize
ohoho, ransom casually dismissing the "built from nothing" myth of the rich kid with the hefty loan starting their business from "nothing" when "nothing" is a million dollar starting loan
oh I wish ransom was actually the dickhead with a heart of gold he's selling himself as
this story is a mystery, but it's also a huge miscommunication plot - but the trick is, marta can't clarify things because of the whole murder thing
lord, this movie is devious - I know ransom is sus af (it's the first spoiler anyone posted) but DAMN he's so likeable
ahh, meg, there it is - she was all nice and kind but now she's facing a drop-out future and she's panicking, and then the real kicker is when marta says she'll take care of her and give her whatever money she needs, but NOT that she'd give the inheritance back
and the reveal that the whole family was listening in, so much for "nobody knows I'm calling you"
regardless of their attitudes, when their comfortable life is threatened, the knives come out
ahh! the subtle thing about how nobody else consoled harlan's mother!! aaaaaaaaaa
oh boy, the subtle nightmare of a family trying to stay under the radar because of the whole "undocumented mom" situation and then getting dumped in the middle of a media frenzy
tbh walt is being a right shithead about this but he does make a good point about harlan putting marta in a very unfair position - I wonder if it even occurred to him, from his position, that marta might not be emotionally prepared for this hot nonsense
"What's the cheese?"
the jumpy editing from before is back, making us initially think maybe ransom and/or marta burned the building with the evidence before they roll up in shock
my lord, blanc calling her phone and then the quick cut to him fully leaning out of the window gesturing for her to pick up already, absolute gold
ooooooo so many twists, marta feeling horrendously guilty thinking ransom's being picked up because harlan's mom mistook her for him
and they just get us to realize that without ever having to state it outright because we're already used to putting the pieces together
oh damn, first actual confirmed murder, marta's gotta stop getting caught up in these
ahhhh thank goodness, information has finally be shared - offscreen, no less, what a relief
marta girl you do not need to keep comforting meg after she sold out your damn mom
blanc is the saving grace of this movie because he's such a soothing presence, and "you make a pretty lousy murderer" is such a soft thing to say
ultimate shoutout to blanc for storming in and giving the fam a dressing-down for being right shitheads
stop talking about donuts my dude
this movie got so much less stressful now that marta is no longer in direct conflict with blanc
loving how nobody in this family knows where marta is from
addendum: I want more movies with blanc but I also demand marta stick around as his watson
oh lord, she didn't give him the wrong dose, but that means harlan didn't have to die aaaaaa
this movie is a mystery and then it's a psych thriller and now it's a full-on tragedy
shoutout to this one detective who is absolutely LIVING for this
and shoutout to the other detective quietly rolling his eyes as marta and the detective both cite the same hallmark movie
I also like how Marta's got a better memory for other people's personal details than any of the family members have for hers
oh wow, not "you did this" but "HUGH did this"
"You make the help call you Hugh… because you're an asshole!"
funny how all these family members act like marta stole from them when their own dad/granddad decided to give her the stuff himself
"Welp… in for a penny 🙃🗡"
I don't really get why Linda was so butthurt earlier on the movie when we know she has a million-dollar company and is basically the only person in the movie who's actually something approximating self-made (albeit with a starting loan of a gazillion dollars)
I think what it actually was was that she interpreted it as a slight against her from her father, hence the closure received from his last note to her being an ultimately loving statement telling her to cut her trash husband loose
or maybe because she IS the only one of his kids to do something for herself - unlike her disappointing siblings and siblings-in-law, SHE'S the one who did it all right, so why is SHE cut loose too? idk she's interesting to me
I've known a few people who have a similar attitude, sort of an aura of vague tolerance; seemingly chill only because they anticipate disappointment and failure from everyone but themselves, because they put themselves ABOVE those people - and they hate to be lumped in with them
Linda only cracks when she realizes that EVERYONE has been cut out of the will, and that's when she snaps and believes Marta must've seduced or manipulated her father, who otherwise she has no reason to doubt the love of. That's why the letter at the end is closure for her.
While I'm at it, you could write a book about every single character in this piece. Richard, loud and bombastic because he's terrified of being seen as unnecessary and cut loose; Jodi, frivolously burning everything and more and never considering a future without the safety net
Walt's an odd duck because we have almost no sense of his personal goals, but I think that fits him fine - he snuggled into his father's shadow and never aimed beyond that, except to pitch theoretical big-money adaptions of the same works. He falls apart quietly, purposeless.
The grandkids are a little less nuanced; they're all in camp "everything is safe for me because I'm rich and have lawyers", but it manifests in different ways - one activist whose ideals are entirely surface-level and performative, one personalityless racist troll, and Ransom
anyway movie good

Historical accuracy in popular media is one issue, but today's "Unleash Your Inner Viking" trailers for Assassin's Creed Valhalla peddle disproven misinformation that supports dangerous ideology – we're talking toxic masculinity at best, and white supremacy at worst.
Here's how:
The trailers follow a group of caryoonishly-inept losers going to a camp in the woods to learn how to solve their life problems by placing AC:V and then Acting Like A Viking – in practice, this means: being angry and rude, threats of violence, and actual violence.
It's played for laughs, but this perpetrates the ideas that:
1) Vikings were angry brutes who solved everything with violence.
2) Vikings had to use violence because if they didn't their enemies would (most viking violence was directed at innocent monks at sacked monasteries)...

Some stories are all buildup to a final payoff, and some stories are a series of smaller buildups & payoffs. Smaller buildups and regular payoffs are considered risky because they don't FORCE the audience to keep watching - but they don't risk it all if the ending disappoints. -R
So many series seem to believe the first approach is the only way to hold an audience. A finale can never be unconditionally satisfying - it leaves the audience wanting more payoff. And then if (when) those series fail to deliver in the finale, they leave nothing behind. -R
This was brought up by @Hbomberguy in his Sherlock video as a series that promised an ever-increasing series of increasingly arcane questions and then wildly disappointed when its finale didn't actually give a satisfying resolution. Game of Thrones had the same issue. -R
