@UtahDepOfHealth Happy to report, for the first time in a long time, this is NOT a new Monday record, down 276 from last week. Number of tests also up from last week, positivity down (but still too high).
We did set a new record for the week in deaths at 62. #utpol
Here is the info on those five Utahns who died:
• Box Elder male, age 65-84
• SLCo male, 45-64

FWIW, last time we didn’t have a record for the day was Nov. 1.
The 503 hospitalized patients is a record, 198 of them in ICU, also a record. Referral ICUs are 87.7% full. Overall, ICUs at 84.3% capacity. (Most hospitals still using prior day data). #utpol
We passed the 10,000 mark for school-associated cases (10,029).
I’ll use this as an opportunity to plug today’s column about how we can use the holidays as a time to reboot and get a grasp on school cases. #utpol

Finishing up the thread after the Lions failed to lose to Alex Smith.
Today was yet another record for a Sunday. Had 21,187 cases in the past week and 59 deaths. That’s more cases in a week than we had all of July and the first week of August.

So you mighta seen the news yesterday that the @sltrib editor, @jnpearce had resigned.
It came as a real shock. And I wanted to take a little time to process it before I posted. So I did that and then I had a few drinks, so here goes ….
Let’s start here … I wasn’t sold on Jennifer when she took the job. I liked her very much and knew she was very capable. But her background was mainly radio, not print. And I didn’t know what to expect.
On top of that, I loved Terry Orme, and hated the way he was treated.
I got over that pretty quickly. It didn’t take long to understand her smarts her skill and her love for news won me over.
It was a VERY hard job, trying to not just keep the broken down old jalopy running but rebuild it on the fly into a racecar. She handled it remarkably well.
This chart shows the 7-day rolling average of new cases in Salt Lake County (red) and rest of the state (gray). The mask mandate went into effect June 25. #utpol
Spokesman for SLCo Health: "In recent days, Salt Lake County cases have been a lower share of the state’s total cases; while we used to consistently be 45–50% of the state’s cases, we are now around 35% most days.” (Today they were 26%) … more … #utpol
SLCo spox continued: "We don’t have data that shows face coverings are the definitive reason for our recent improvement (as compared to other interventions like social distancing), but it’s certainly possible the face covering requirement is having a positive effect …” #utpol
