It's often overlooked that linking EU funds to rule of law is a very personal threat to Viktor Orbán and his family too.
In recent years, my colleagues at @direkt36 have uncovered in details how EU funds enriched the Orbáns: the father, the brother and the son-in-law. THREAD.
2/ Győző Orbán Sr., the PM’s father made tens of millions of euros through Hungarian public works projects funded by EU money.
Orbán's companies were always sub-contractors or suppliers, hence they could avoid appearing in public databases for years. direkt36.hu/en/rejtett-all…
3/ After a 3-year-long public information lawsuit, @direkt36 received additional documents related to the businesses of Orbán’s father. It turned out that he benefited from a road construction which was criticized by the EU due to its extremely high costs. direkt36.hu/en/meg-a-korma…
4/ Besides building roads, Orbán Sr. participated in several sewage construction projects too. This time, the scheme was even more interesting: the project bidder (and winner) was Orbán’s childhood friend, Lőrinc Mészáros, who then subcontracted Orbán Sr. direkt36.hu/en/igy-folyik-…
5/ Thanks to these EU funded Hungarian state projects, Viktor Orbán’s father became so successful that, in 2018, his mining company’s profit margin (41,3%) was more than double of the market average. direkt36.hu/en/igy-lett-ny…
6/ Let’s move on to Győző Orbán Jr., the Prime Minister’s brother, whose technology firm received EU subsidies multiple times throughout the years. In 2016, for example, Győző Orbán Jr. won two grants worth more than a million euros. direkt36.hu/en/orban-egyre…
7/ Győző Orbán won another EU subsidy (416K euros) in 2018 - with a little help from the family, of course: "The funding for the subsidies comes from the EU’s budget but the grant system is (...) under the control of the Prime Minister’s Office." direkt36.hu/en/megint-nagy…
8/ Finally, there’s the story of Orbán’s son-in-law, István Tiborcz (married to Ráhel Orbán), who got rich through EU-funded public lighting projects. His company kept winning contracts without competition as the procurements were rigged from the start. direkt36.hu/en/tiborcz-ist…
9/ Orbán’s office jumped in directly to help the son-in-law’s business. “The Prime Minister’s Office played a significant role in enabling Tiborcz’s former company to win a series of public procurements and other state contracts without real competition." direkt36.hu/en/igy-segitet…
10/ The business dealings of Orbán’s son-in-law were so shady that OLAF, the EU’s anti-fraud office came to Hungary to investigate them. They basically corroborated what @direkt36 had already uncovered. direkt36.hu/en/hat-dolog-a…
11/ And here comes the part which explains why the enforcement of the rule of law regarding how EU funds are spent is crucial: despite strong evidence of fraud by OLAF, guess what happened to the Hungarian police investigation against Orbán’s son-in-law... euractiv.com/section/justic…

“How Western Taxpayers Help Boost the Businesses of Hungary PM’s Inner Circle”
Orbán’s childhood friend, Lőrinc Mészáros since became Hungary’s richest man - with EU money of course
1/ Today’s big news is that Hungary will veto the next EU budget over its rule of law conditionalty.
Hungary has been increasingly using its veto power in the EU in recent years, however, these were under-the-radar issues for the general public.
Here are some of them. Thread.
2/ Orbán’s government is not only fighting EU criticism of Hungary’s very own rule of law situation.
Hungary regularly blocked or threatened to veto similar EU attempts against key allies and strategic partners like China, the Trump-led U.S., Israel, or Belarus.
3/ China is the most spectacular example. Hungary regularly defends the regime against EU condemnation over human rights issues.
In March 2017, Hungary alone prevented the EU from signing a petition protesting the torture of detained lawyers in China. washingtonpost.com/news/worldview…
Happening now: neo-Nazi, Fascist and other extreme right groups from all around Europe (~300-400 people) gather in Budapest, Hungary for the so-called ‘Day of Honor’ commemoration. They are remembring WWII Nazi and allied Hungarian soldiers who were slain by the Soviets. THREAD.
2/ Hungarian police tried to ban the demonstration, but a court ruling allowed them to gather.
Day of Honor was first commemorated by a neo-Nazi group called Hungarian National Front (MNA) who later turned out to be funded & trained by Russia’s GRU. index.hu/english/2016/1…
3/ The demonstration is peaceful, lots of German neo-Nazis are present, and, according to their flags, Russian, Bulgarian & others are here too.
Main Hungarian organizers are Legio Hungaria and Betyarsereg (Army of Outlaws).
Yesterday, @derspiegel reported that German prosecutors investigate 3ppl suspected of spying. Sabathil also holds a Hungarian citizenship. spiegel.de/politik/deutsc…
@MartinCZV4EU@derspiegel 2/ Interesting that a Wikipedia article for Sabathil was created last night by a user who seems to be interested in German politics, diplomacy&Russia.
Sabathil's name was circulating yesterday among journalists but German media refrained from naming him. de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerhard_S…
@MartinCZV4EU@derspiegel 3/ "The German Federal Prosecutor's Office confirmed it is investigating three people suspected of working as secret agents. Investigators carried out searches of properties in Berlin, Brussels & the German regional states of Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria” politico.eu/article/german…
2/ "Journalists working for independent media are publicly vilified, including on pro-government media, as opposition political activists, foreign agents, traitors or even as “Hungary-haters” or “non-Hungarians”, as in the recent case of an anti-Semitic smear campaign...
3/ “...The claim that independent journalists are 'political activists' was repeated by the Hungarian government’s spokesperson."
"Independent journalists are subject to pervasive discrimination by the state when it comes to access to information."
1/ In November, Hungary’s gov’t controlled media was busier than ever attacking independent journalists. These were coordinated smear campaigns in TV, print&online media. Here is a recap of how @b_novak, @erdelyip, @indexhu’s Gabor Miklosi & @floragaramvolgy were targeted. THREAD
2/ Background: Viktor Orban’s right-wing party suffered unexpected losses in Hungary’s municipal election on October 13. They’ve lost Budapest & many large cities.
Party bigwigs started blaming pollsters & especially the still too independent online media sphere for the defeat.
3/ On November 3, @b_novak & his @nytimes colleagues published an article on "how oligarchs and populists milk the EU for millions", focusing on Orban's Hungary. nytimes.com/2019/11/03/wor…
1/ Some context for today's municipal elections in Hungary for those who are interested. Thread.
In autumn 2006, Viktor Orban’s party, Fidesz won big at the municipal elections yet wasn’t able to carry Budapest. They only carried it 4yrs later.
Today, all eyes are on Budapest.
2/ Fidesz has won EVERY nationwide election since 2006, all national, municipal elections & public referendums.
This unprecedented winning streak was partly due to the opposition’s fragmentation.
Today, for the 1st time, we see a joint opposition (‘Összefogás’) facing Fidesz.
3/ Fidesz’s nationwide hegemony is mostly based on their ability of controlling the countryside through having Fidesz mayors & Fidesz majority city councils almost everywhere.
Town budgets are important resources to “support” local party infrastructures, campaigns, media etc.
