Dr. Deborah Birx is at the Trump WH press briefing. Long time no see.
Pence wore a mask as he entered the room, took it off when he got to the dais to speak. Birx has kept her mask on from moment one.

Cases rates are spiking.

Dr Birx:
Wear a mask.
Physically distance.
Continue your hand hygiene.
Limit interactions indoor to immediate households during this level of community spread.
"People are spreading the virus because they do not know they are infected with the virus. People are coming indoors, they look healthy, but among those individuals , they could be [asymptomatic]." Because of asympto spread, that's why maskwearing is so crucial, Birx adds.
Dr. Birx underlines her concerns around people under 35 being infected and unaware yet still heading indoors to gather.
Right now it is about 50/50 hospital rate admittance for age groups 40-69 and among those over 70, Birx says
As you bring together individuals for the holidays, remember to be vigilant, Birx says.
Dr. Fauci is here as well today to talk about vaccine development. His masks were doubled up but he removed both after coming up to the mic.
He recaps the success of 2 vax's so far, one by Moderna and one by Pfizer. The efficacy point is "extraordinary," Fauci says.
He notes:
Pfizer - 95% efficacious against disease, incl. severe disease,
Moderna - 94.5% efficacious and that too include some severe cases
Fauci on whether this was rushed:
The process of the speed did not compromise, at all, safety nor did it compromise scientific integrity. It was a reflection of the extraordinary scientific advances in these types of vaccines that allowed us to do things in mos. that took yrs b4.
"We need to put to rest any concept that this was rushed in any inappropriate way," Fauci says of vaccine development from Moderna and Pfizer.
And in the meantime, we must "double down on health measures" to prevent the viral spread.
Fauci: We're not talking about shutting down the country or locking down. We're talking about intensifying simple public health measures: Mask wearing, social distance, avoiding congregant settings, doing things outdoors...If we do that, we can hold things off until the vax comes
Earlier tweet deleted for a typo.

Fauci on the need for vigilance as the US waits for the vaccine: "If you're fighting a battle and the cavalry is on the way, you don't stop shooting! You keep going until the cavalry gets there and then, you may even want to continue fighting."
HHS Secy Azar at tonight's briefing says Pfizer plans on filing for emergency use authorization for their Covid-19 vax tomorrow
Pence, nor any other members of the WH taskforce took questions as they were shouted at them on the refusal by President Trump to transition the White House to Biden.

President-elect @JoeBiden says now he hasn't ruled out bringing legal action against the GSA to get the transition underway
c-span.org/video/?478269-…
"Hang on, I'm on my way," President-elect @JoeBiden says to a question over what msg he wants to send the American people as they watch the Trump WH deploy one failed legal maneuver after another.
"It's hard to fathom how this man thinks," @JoeBiden says of Trump. "I'm confident he knows he hasn't won... and I just you know...far from me to question his motive but it's just outrageous what he is doing."

On 495 heading South from Maryland to VA this afternoon, this was one caravan of Trump supporters that stretched for over 2 minutes. I counted at least 45 vehicles. Minutes before I saw a smaller caravan of similar adorned vehicles, totaling roughly 12. Pardon video quality.
I also observed anti-abortion protesters standing on an overpass. They stood above traffic near a banner asking Pres. Trump to save "pre-born" babies. Another vehicle I saw was covered in red painted handprints with pro-Trump messages scrawled on its rear window and trunk.
Many of the trucks and SUVs in the first caravan had hazard lights on and were driving 10-15 miles below the speed limit in middle most lane, causing traffic to bottleneck at times or force drivers to abruptly shift lanes as they came barreling up 495 at the usual 60mph.

Once in the 1990s my brother was a waiter in a small Mississippi town. Wearing a Star of David around his neck, he was often told to hide it unless he wanted trouble. He recalled to me once being asked by a patron "Are you a Jew, boy?"
My brother quickly and confidently responded "Nope!" & headed to the kitchen to hide his necklace. The restaurant was a Jim Crow era relic with a painted KKK long faded and chipped away on the building's back exterior. He distinctly recalled that. He knew better than to backtalk.
He quit a day later for fear of the man (or men) returning to the restaurant to beat him or worse. Small town. He played classical guitar and therefore was pretty well known by locals who enjoyed his playing. He had a big mop of curly black hair. He was 6'3. Hard to miss.

Coming up: SCOTUS oral arguments today in consolidated case US v Briggs, where justices will consider whether a 5 year statute of limitation on rape charges and convictions applies in the military. More to come later for @CourthouseNews.
I will have a story for you but you can also listen here: c-span.org/video/?469260-…
Amicus from Congress supporting US: "The provisions in the USCMJ that address rape in the military have been understood for decades to reflect Congress’ intent that those who commit the crime of rape should not be permitted to escape justice by hiding behind the passage of time"
