Bhasma Aarti of Mahakaleswar Jyotirling

Kal means Time as well as Space & who is beyond time & Space is known as Mahakal.Mahakal recides in the city of Ujjain on the bank of Kshipra River also Known as Avantika.
The Bhasma Aarti of Mahakaleswar is an age-old tradition.
This unique rituals is performed with the open of the temple in very early morning.The first aarti of the day performed with Bhasma. In past these Bhasma was from the ashes of the funeral pyre (Chita Bhasma)
Now this practice has changed & the Bhasma is prepared from by burning
the Cow dung with the wood of Sami,Pippal,Palash and Ber & Priests perform Mantra uccharan during this preparation of Bhasma

There is a beautiful legend behind the Bhasma Aarti.
In ancient time Ujjain was ruled by king Chandrasena who was a great devotee of Mahadev.The residents
of Avanti nagari also had great faith on Mahadev.Once a demon Dushan came to Avantika after getting a boon from Bramha & stated torturing the people.The residents & king prayed to Mahadev for their rescue from the demon.
The earth stilted with great sound and Mahakal appeared.
Shiva Burnt Dushan into ashes and made Sringar with his ashes.
With the request of the people of Avanti he started recide there as Mahakal and from that day the Bhasma Aarti of Mahakal Started at Ujjain .

The 24 wheels of Konark Sun Temple are very popular beautifully balanced sculptures.

The wheels are 9.9 feet in diameter with 9 inch rim.Each one has 8 thick spokes & 8 thin spoke.The spokes joining the hub with rim are 3.3 feet in length
Out of these 24 wheel 2 wheel shows time accurately.
The distance between wider spoke is 3 hour .the thinner spoke between two wider thicker spoke is 1.5 hour i.e 90 min.The 30 beads between the thicker & thinner spokes represents 3 minutes.
If one puts its finger at the center of the axle then its shadow shows exact time of the day
the 12 pair of wheels represents 12 month of the year .and 24 wheals signifies 24 hour of a day & 8 major spokes signifies the 8 prahara of a day.

The temple of Bhgwan Shiva was there much before the present day structure.
In Treta Yuga Ravana performed
severe Tapasya to please Mahadev. In order to get imdomitable power he offered his ten Head in the Yagna Kunda.Please with Ravana's Devotion Shiva appeared before Ravana
and gave him the boon.
Mahadev also fixed his ten head & healed the injury of Ravana as a Vaidya.Hence Mahadev Shiva is worshiped as Vaidyanath here.

The name of Haridwar in ancient time was Mayapur. There was a temple of Mayadevi near the city.
But later the temple was destroyed and the name of the city has changed to Haridwar by the course of time.
