Confirming @TunnelRatDC, the Glenmont terminal supervisor confirmed a pullapart of a train at 1:02pm. #wmata
The #wmata Glenmont terminal supervisor reported this as a train pull-apart in/near the interlocking at Glenmont. Expect no rail service north of Wheaton for several hours.
A 6000-series railcar previously separated last month outside Union Station. #wmata, at the time, pulled all 6000-series cars to perform inspections, and found several additional concerns then. My story from that incident: ggwash.org/view/79397/pot…
Today's Red Line pullapart is more similar to October's than the 2018 Silver Line incident. Today's appears to have occurred between two non-married cars (6150, 6177), rather than between a married pair.
Given initial dispatch time of 1:08pm, all 12 passengers appear to have been assisted off both halves of the disabled train in about 69 minutes (73 minutes after incident began). Times here are estimates.
#wmata Red Line rail service remains suspended between Glenmont and Forest Glen due to a 6000-series undesired uncoupling outside Glenmont. Metrobus and Ride On are two possible alternates.
Two #wmata employees have been on this non-revenue train outside Glenmont for 2.5 hours now, waiting for power on the outbound track to come up so they can move.
Service on the #wmata Red Line remains severely impacted due to the earlier train separation outside Glenmont. With Glenmont yard currently cut off, there are fewer trains available for service.
#wmata has been bring over trains from the Orange/Silver/Blue lines to make up for this reduction on the Red line, but I expect there may still be gaps for evening rush service.
6000-series railcars, just pulled from service by #wmata, make up about 14% of the active rail fleet. Metro has ~1280 cars total (748 7Ks) and uses about 900 daily for service.
#wmata has begun moving the lead quad of the incident train, labeled here as 709, towards Brentwood Yard. The trailing quad of four cars will be the next to move.
Re-classifying today's incident as a pullapart instead of an undesired uncoupling, based on new evidence. Story coming to GGWash (probably) tomorrow. #wmata
This diagram shows a coupler head used on the #wmata 6000-series trains. Each railcar has one of these, and they're used to hook up to other railcars to make trains. The front of this is what detached from a car yesterday @ Glenmont.
Metro doesn't have switches outside court house, but it does have some at Rosslyn. #wmata ATC personnel are manually setting the outbound switch @ Rosslyn to keep trains moving.
Orange/Silver/Blue line trains are delayed in both directions due to this signal issue. Switches @ both Rosslyn and Clarendon are clamped, slowing trains down. Court House is also being bypassed due to the power outage causing all of this.
Single-tracking between Pentagon City and Braddock Road continues. All trains on the DC-bound track. Some trains will skip some stations in the single-tracking area if there's another train behind. #wmata is still investigating the underlying track circuit issue(s).
Orange/Silver/Blue line delays due to a signal problem @ Federal Center SW. Delays both directions. #wmata
Trains are still stopped at both directions @ Federal Center. Two train operators need to leave their trains and go down to the tracks to secure switches before trains can move again. It'll take a few more minutes.
I keep forgetting when #wmata Board day is. There are so many meetings these days.
Metro received an unmodified opinion of its FY20 financials from the RSM auditing team. There're still some outstanding questions on CARES act funding implications due to lack of guidance/clarity from the Feds, but that's not on #wmata
The auditors (Dan Bonnette) heaped praise on #wmata for how the process went, exchange of info, etc., esp w/everything done virtually. For maybe 1st time in his years on the #wmata account, "I don't think a single deadline was missed by management"
Inbound Orange/Silver/Blue delays due to a switch issue at the Stadium-Armory junction (where switch replacement work was done this past weekend) #wmata
The Stadium-Armory junction is again causing Orange/Silver/Blue delays today. Switch 11 is today's culprit, though the root cause is unknown (yet). #wmata
