Today's #LainaReadsAnne thread is going to be a little shorter because if I combined this and the next one, it'd be massive and way too long.

But it's still going to be fun!

#LainaReadsAnne Anne introduces herself to Mr. Phillips and there's this great shot of her where Gilbert is just mooning after her. And it's just completely in the background and not the focus, but really cute.

Also the dress Anne wears is the one Marilla was making earlier

#LainaReadsAnne Gilbert continues to gaze at, wink at, and then throw things at Anne as she gets settled in her seat and the day gets started. His flirting tactics could use a little work, but I hate him so much less than 1934 Gilbert who SUCKED.

#LainaReadsAnne When he calls her "Carrots" this is his face. Remember 1934 Gilbert's face?

#LainaReadsAnne Here, Gilbert is just trying to get attention - especially when the other boys start playing up and giving him feedback. It feels natural to the way kids their age would act.

#LainaReadsAnne Also him pulling her braid doesn't look like he's trying to break her fucking neck like it does in the 1934 version.

#LainaWatchesAnne "HOW DARE YOU" goes Anne and "SMASH" goes the slate

"OUCH" goes Gilbert's skull, I assume

#LainaWatchesAnne Also I like that Anne smashes Gilbert's own slate in this one, not hers. This scene is done very well. 10/10 would recommend.

#LainaWatchesAnne Gilbert, still seeing stars, immediately says it was his fault for teasing her, but Mr. Phillips is having one of it. He makes Anne write "Ann Shirley has a very bad temper" 100 times over on the blackboard, spelling it wrong, of course. Because he sucks.

#LainaWatchesAnne After school, Gilbert tries to apologiz again but Anne ignores him.

Also this Gilbert actor has a great voice and did some voice work on Canadian TV. And I looked him up and he died in 2015???? It's sad.

#LainaWatchesAnne Now here's a great background detail - Gilbert is talking to I think Josie Pye and just gazing at Anne. He's so into her XD

#LainaWatchesAnne Marilla comes in to confront Anne about the school incident and Anne is hiding in bed as we approach probably our biggest plot jump.

Poor Anne is very green

#LainaWatchesAnne Strictly speaking, this is a big jump book plot-wise but it makes sense in a movie. Gilbert makes fun of her hair ➜ Anne dyes her hair ➜ Disaster

#LainaWatchesAnne Megan is amazingly dramatic here. Marilla is trying to scold her, and Anne just makes this sobbing whine noise and collapses and Marilla is just like "well, I tried" and gives up XD

It's SO funny

#LainaWatchesAnne Marilla: "You really smashed your slate over that boy's head?"
Anne: "Yes."
Marilla: "Hard?"
Anne: "Very hard, I'm afraid."

Marilla seems a little proud and I love it XD

#LainaWatchesAnne This is also the moment she declares that the trial is over and Anne will be staying at Green Gables. She says to Anne, "I think you may be a kindred spirit after all."

Awww

#LainaWatchesAnne In the next scene, Anne declares she will never look at herself again. Matthew gives her a hug and says, "You're our girl now and the prettiest one this side of Halifax." Again I awww

#LainaWatchesAnne Actually though Anne's short hair is super cute and my notes here says "makes me want to cut mine". I have done so since writing this.

#LainaWatchesAnne Apparently we are doing weird Spinster Marilla backstory again. Diana reports that her mother says Marilla was "betrothed" but never married due to a quarrel so she "had to live with her brother".

#LainaWatchesAnne I guess this is closer to the book than the 1934 one, in that John Blythe (Gilbert's father) and Marilla did have a quarrel and then never spoke again, but it's weird both these adaptations make Anne and Diana so obsessed with it!

#LainaWatchesAnne It's like half a paragaph for Anne at the very end of the book and Diana isn't even involved at all. I don't know if she ever even learns this!

Why do allos think you need some tragic backstory to be single?

#LainaWatchesAnne Anyways.

Fall and winter and spring pass in 3 quick shots of nature!

And Anne's hair has grown out! Because nobody wanted to deal with wigs for that long, probably.

#LainaWatchesAnne This kind of time passing did happen in the book, but it's a little cheap in a movie to do too often. Also, Anne's hair was short for a bunch of stuff that's yet to come.

#LainaWatchesAnne Phillips is creepy to Prissy Andrews, Anne basically creates a rivalry between her and Gilbert out of nothing, and a farmer gets mad at her. He hates Phillips, though, so I can't totally disagree with him on things.

#LainaWatchesAnne Phillips sticks Anne next to Gilbert because his feelings got hurt being scolded by the farmer and I actually have a small gripe here about the set dressing/blocking.

#LainaWatchesAnne The class should probably be more segregated with girls on one side and boys on the other. It would probably be more historically accurate and also it would be more visually impactful to have Anne be the only girl sitting with a boy.

#LainaWatchesAnne Sitting with a boy is a really big deal in the book, but it doesn't come across as much in this.

#LainaWatchesAnne Google Books says this book was published in 1896. I think there were editions in 1907 and 1911 (etc) but it does seem to date back to the 1890s.

Forever trying to nail down that timeline :P

#LainaWatchesAnne Anne competes with Gilbert more in some wild spelling action. Gilbert tries desperately to flirt with Anne and she ices him out hard.

Diana says Gilbert called Anne smart and Anne takes this to mean Gilbert called her ugly.

Anne's a bit dramatic.

#LainaWatchesAnne Diana and Anne frolic on the beach and hold hands while some very romantic music plays.

I do enjoy a queer interlude.

#LainaWatchesAnne Meanwhile Gilbert pines.

And gets caught pining.

#LainaWatchesAnne Anne and Gilbert tie for first place at the end of the school year and Phillips announces THAT HE'S LEAVING

#LainaWatchesAnne So the Moodys are going to throw a goodbye party for him and we will pick up in the next thread when things get dramatic because no one cares about Phillips.
