The truth is some in our field have engaged in disturbing behavior that shows they lack a most basic commitment to progressive values.
Signing petitions that defended the dictatorship in Iran just when it faced the wrath of its people is a stain they’ll never clear of their reputation.
The farcical version of that is the bizarre sight of attacking a chair in Zoroastrian studies as “islamophobic”. An insult to our colleagues and an insult to a religious minority in Iran.
I don’t have a simple view of Soleimani. If I did I wouldn’t write an entire book about him.
But the fact that a progressive website would run an uncritical piece about a man whose many of its own Syrian readers remember for killing their families is... I’ll leave it to you.
