1/ Fascists and oligarchs within the Republican Party are already beginning preparations to steal the 2024 presidential election. Trump, it turns out, was just a dry run for them.
2/ Their allies in the media are coming together, too. This weekend a Fox & Friends host suggested that Trump shouldn’t have to go through the courts to stay President; Republicans in swing state legislatures should simply award their state’s electors to him.
3/ Fascists often, in the beginning, are idealists. They just think that things need to be more orderly and tidy, and that a small number of very smart, very wealthy people need to be in charge to ensure social and political stability. And it always ends the same way: in tragedy.
4/ When Biden won, Republicans in the Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Arizona legislatures refused to direct their electors to vote for Trump. They could have given him four more years; the Constitution is clear on this. But they chose to put country over party.
5/ Many are now facing 2022 primary challenges from Trumpy Republicans who were willing to ignore the election results and keep Trump in the White House. Presumably, they will do the same for any Republican with similar fascist tendencies.
6/ In 60 years, the GOP has gone from an electoral strategy of embracing white racists (Nixon), to a strategy of suppressing votes (Florida 2000), to now a strategy of ignoring the results of elections and using legislative power to appoint a president via the Electoral College.
7/ And it’s not as if we weren’t warned. Back in March, a conservative friend in DC told me Republicans were discussing this option if Trump lost the popular vote in the election.
8/ I wrote an OpEd about it that was widely circulated, and I discussed it on my program with Tom Perez and elected Democratic legislators. They were confident that even Republicans would not be this craven.
9/ Now, even hosts on Fox are openly and enthusiastically embracing the idea of Republicans state legislators simply overruling the votes of their people. Again, this is totally legal and would almost certainly be upheld by the Supreme Court.
It’s in the Constitution.
10/ That Constitutional loophole could give the next authoritarian Republicans try to put in the White House the absolute power to ignore the will of the people and take this country down the road so well traveled in the past by Germany, Japan, Italy and Spain.
11/ Today, authoritarian leaders of previously democratic nations have given the next Republican president a more modern blueprint for flipping America into oligarchy and neofascism.
12/ From Hungary to The Philippines, Poland, India, and Brazil, democracy is under attack and neofascists have seized power.
13/ When the electoral college was put in the constitution, it could take a week for news to travel from one end of the country to the other. The idea was that electors would go to DC and meet the candidates, and have the discretion to weed out people of “low moral character.“
14/ In the Federalist papers, Alexander Hamilton wrote:“The process of election [by the electoral college], affords a moral certainty, that the office of President will never fall to the lot of any man who is not in an eminent degree endowed with the requisite qualifications.”
15/ Indeed, while a knave or rogue or traitor may fool enough people to even ascend to the office of mayor of a city or governor of a state, Hamilton believed the Electoral College would ferret out such an incompetent or traitor.
16/ Hamilton wrote, “Talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity may alone suffice to elevate a man to the first honors in a single State; but it will require other talents, and a different kind of merit, to establish him in the esteem and confidence” of electors.
17/ It took 240 years, but Hamilton‘s optimism and hope for America has nearly been defeated. It took 50 years and the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars by a massive rightwing billionaire donor and media network, but they are on the edge of success.
18/ Every American who cares about our democratic republican form of government must push to end the Electoral College before 2024. Weather by constitutional amendment, by law, or by the National Popular Vote interstate compact, this is vital.
19/ Similarly, Americans must also fight the election of those pro-oligarchy Republicans who are today plotting to take over swing state legislatures, and pass federal election law updates to make it harder for rightwing billionaires to buy their seats for them.

1/ Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans are proposing to let employers injure or even kill their workers and bring back the three-martini lunch...in exchange for one measly month of extended unemployment benefits.
2/ Senate Republicans are trying to sabotage both the incoming Biden administration and screw working people by refusing to extend expanded unemployment benefits in Mitch McConnell‘s new “stimulus“; it does, however, make it illegal for workers to sue their employers.
3/ It’s been six months since the House of Representatives passed the $3 trillion Heroes act that gave jobless people $600 a week, and more than two months since they passed a slimmed-down $2.2 trillion version that gave only $300 a week. But the GOP said no to both.

1/ Florida governor Ron DeSantis says that he won’t put into place a mask mandate because people in blue states that have used mask mandates are still getting infected. His logic is extraordinary; let’s extend it.
2/ All across the northern American states today, people are wearing coats, gloves, scarves and hats as they go outdoors. Yet only around 1330 Americans die of hypothermia every year, and almost all of those people were wearing coats, gloves, scarves and/or hats!
3/ And the majority of people who die of hypothermia we’re not only wearing warm clothing, they also had pre-existing conditions! That must be the real cause that they died, right? Those 1300 death certificates must be wrong!

1/ We must stop Republicans from helping Trump “poison the wells“ and “salt the fields“ of America.
2/ Donald Trump‘s treason extends far beyond his efforts to damage Americans belief in our form of government, our elected democratic republic, that Trump’s oligarch buddies in Saudi Arabia, Russia and China also regularly disparage.
3/ Trump’s also actively damaging the ability of the incoming Biden administration to aid Americans during the Trump Depression, and to get the virus in check. In this, he has help from Steve Mnuchin and Mitch McConnell.

1/ Will Biden and the Democrats take on the biggest challenges of this generation? Tens of millions of Americans are going hungry right now. Today. But Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans don’t give a damn, because they only exist to serve their billionaire donors.
2/ Almost 20 million Americans will lose all their unemployment benefits the week after Christmas, but Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans don’t give a damn, because they only exist to serve their billionaire donors.
3/ Over 12 million Americans have Covid and millions of them will suffer long-term consequences like strokes, heart damage, dementia, and chronic fatigue, but Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans don’t give a damn because they only exist to serve their billionaire donors.

1/ The GOP is no longer a legitimate political party: it’s a cult. It’s becoming increasingly clear to Americans that the Republican Party only stands for one thing: the privilege and power of wealthy white men.
2/ Over the last 40 years they have devised increasingly byzantine rules to prevent low income whites and people of color from voting and are now trying to outright throw out ballots in Detroit, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
3/ They’ve worked for decades, at both the state and federal level, to make it harder for women, particularly low income women, to get access to birth control, women’s health services, and abortion.

1/ America is confronting a crisis like we haven’t seen since 1930, and, just as happened during the Republican Great Depression (yes, that’s what they called it in the 1930s), the GOP is committed to making it worse.
2/ The Republican Party’s latest 2020 scam gives Trump a tiny chance of hanging onto the White House while doing massive, permanent damage to American democracy and, as if they consider it a bonus, kneecaping and, in some cases, killing working class and poor Americans.
3/ Covid diagnoses & deaths are exploding across the country; millions of Americans will lose unemployment benefits, eviction protection, & a pause in student loan payments the week after Christmas; & all Mitch McConnell will do is push through more unqualified rightwing judges.
