Today is World Aids Day and earlier commemorations were held at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).
This year the commemorations are running under the theme, "Global Solidarity, Shared Responsibility" ImageImage
National Aids Council CEO Dr Bernard Madzima gave an overview of the commemorations. He called for unity in combating HIV and Aids, saying it will take collective effort among countries to achieve set goals.
Mr Dennis Mhangure Deputy Director in the Ministry of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Harare Metropolitan gave welcome remarks on behalf of Minister Oliver Chidawu.
Mr Mhangure urged people to use the commemorations as a platform of self introspection as the country scales up the prevention of HIV and Aids. "Let us continue to avoid the spread of HIV through available means such as abstinence and safe sex," he said.
Musician Fungisai Zvakavapano and poet Albert Nyathi provided the entertainment. IYASA too had a theatrical presentation. ImageImageImageImage
Addressing the event virtually, VP and Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Constantino Chiwenga urged people to unite in addressing HIV and Covid-19. He said we should not let our guard down in dealing with these two issues. ImageImage
VP Chiwenga said Covid-19 has been a major wake up call for all health systems. He said people should focus on reducing mother-to-child transmissions in the fight against the spread of HIV.

First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa has joined other African First Ladies in Accra Ghana, for the Merck More than a Mother annual conference. She is accompanied by the Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Obadiah Moyo and the Ministry’s Family Health Director Dr Bernard Madzima.
The two day conference starts today and ends tomorrow. President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo is expected to officially open the conference. The First Lady is one of the speakers at this Merck Africa Asia Luminary 6th edition.
The conference is being co-chaired by Merck foundation CEO Dr Rasha Kelej and The First Lady of Ghana H.E Rebecca Akufo-ADDO. Ministers of Health, policy makers, health care providers and Academics from African and Asian countries are in attendance.
