Parts of the Arctic averaged up to +14 °C above normal for the entire month of November.

Preliminary data suggesting we witnessed the hottest November globally on record.

2020 is on track to be the hottest year on record.

[THREAD]
Cold in Canada,
Cool La Niña in the pacific,
Cold in Central Asia...

But that's about it for cold.

Enormous warm anomaly over the Arctic from Arctic amplification with significant heat records tumbling in Australia.
Speaking of Australia (again)...

-Hottest November ever.
-Hottest Spring on record and +2 °C above the 1961-1990 average.

First ever spring with an anomaly above +2 °C.

Europe and north America in more detail.

Warmest November on record for parts of Scandinavia.

Cool Canada but USA very warm compared to normal.

Please note that I shifted the scale so that more detail can be seen. ImageImage
South America and Africa in more detail... ImageImage
Record breaking warmth across parts of Asia.

Notable cold blob in central Asia though. ImageImage
Antarctica?

Quite a split but warmth dominated.
But it is currently freezing cold in the Arctic?

Please understand 'anomaly' before commenting.

It can be -10 °C and still be +20 °C warmer than normal. I have a snapshot example of how temperature and temperature anomaly can look. ImageImage
Let's not forget what happened with the hurricanes in November.

#Eta became the strongest Atlantic #hurricane on record to make landfall in Nicaragua in November (Cat. 4, 140 mph winds).

#Iota then reached cat 5 only 2 weeks later and slammed the same communities (as cat 4).
On November 22, Somalia was devasted by Cyclone #Gati.

This was the strongest storm to hit this part of the world since records began 5 decades ago.

Gati was estimated category 2 hurricane equivalent at landfall.

Oh... this also happened in Asia 👇

And the beginning of the month was extremely difficult around the Philippines after a series of Typhoons

Goni was about as powerful as you can get on Planet Earth

Impressive volcanic eruption on the island of Lembata, Indonesia 🇮🇩 yesterday at 9:45 am local time.

Ash column reached over 55,000 feet (17 km) into the atmosphere. The white cloud at the top is called Pileus.

You can see the eruption from space.

You can see it for yourself 👇

Pileus clouds?

They are amazing and are an indication of air rising very quickly through the atmosphere.

They are usually indicators of severe weather above a cumulonimbus. But explosive volcanic eruptions do a similar job.

Photo is a separate eruption Sarychev Peak 🇷🇺

Japan witnessed a massive fireball 1:30 am local time on 29 November 2020.

Oh... and #BirdFlu is trending.

We only have 32 days, 16 hours 9 minutes and 15 seconds until 2021.

Is it just me or are there a lot of these recorded in Japan?

5 years in a row of category 5 hurricanes. This has not happened in recorded history going back to 1851.

#Iota is about to make landfall as a powerful category 5 storm. Nicaragua and Honduras can't take another major hurricane. It was only 2 weeks since category 4 #Eta.
The track of #Eta overlaid projected landfall of #Iota is insane. Two major hurricanes within a fortnight in November. Eta struck Nicaragua on 3 November.

Check out this comparison by @WeatherProf.

Heartbreaking.

Here are some of the beasts from the last 5 years.

This is just cruel.

#Iota is the 30th named Tropical Storm and is expected to become a major Hurricane by early next week

Iota is heading for Central America, likely to hit communities still trying to recover from Hurricane Eta which struck only a few days ago.

THREAD
#Iota is the 30th named storm of this record breaking hurricane season. Winds will be violent but attention quickly turns to flooding potential, again.

Major landfall is looking likely early next week. Honduras 🇭🇳and Nicaragua 🇳🇮 in the immediate firing line.
The track of hurricane #Eta is first image and latest forecast for #Iota from @NHC_Atlantic is the second image.

It is important to note that there is still track and intensity uncertainty and it is crucial to follow official forecasts at nhc.noaa.gov ImageImage

It's like the planet has a fever.

October 2020 helps show the impacts of a changing climate. The Arctic did not freeze due to warmth stored in vast areas of open water - this was a record breaking month for lack of ice.

The air temperature was extremely high compared to normal.
The minimum ice extent did not beat the all time low record in September.

But we did drop all time record low levels through parts of October. Siberian seas suffered the heaviest lack of ice. Image
You can see how much warmer than normal the sea surfaces were through October here.

A baking hot summer and serious lack of ice meant that the refreeze struggled.

The weather pattern also meant that records were achievable more easily.

Extremely violent thunderstorm in Brisbane, Australia 🇦🇺 delivered enormous #hailstones.

Catastrophic damage costing over $50 million.

Short thread...

This is insane. From Brisbane 🇦🇺

One of the worst #hail storms this decade.

Some aerial footage of the damage.

While extremely dangerous, this is a nightmare for insurance.
