Today is World Disability Day and I wanted to drop some truth bombs. What you see depicted in this picture here is the bitter truth of our country.
Despite having a campaign by the government that’s geared towards accessibility, our country is inaccessible for those with disabilities. According to the consensus of 2011, 5-6% of India’s population has some form of disability.
Oh yeah btw, disability is an umbrella term! You cannot just cater to one disability and call yourself ‘disabled friendly’! Imagine 6% of the population don’t have their rights. For a moment, put yourselves in our shoes. Shuddering, isn’t it?
So, who’s to blame? EVERYONE! We are all to blame, our government, our education system, and our society. Think about it: our government has failed to provide accessibility for all. Due to that, we don’t leave our homes as much, sometimes we’re not able to get a proper education.
Since visibility is less in schools, discussions around disability do not occur, the children and administration lack awareness. Since we lack visibility, we aren’t seen in social spaces as much, conversations around disability cannot happen if there’s lack of visibility.
But there’s something EVERYONE can do to remedy this situation. Next time you visit a social space and you realise there isn’t a ramp, RAISE YOUR VOICE! Tell them to build a ramp, because by law it’s mandatory. If all of us collectively raise our voice, change is bound to happen!
THERE’S POWER IN NUMBERS!
BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE!

Remember, we have the power to change things about our country that are unprecedented. All we need to do is to come together and unleash the power that we possess. They’ll have to listen to us.

THREAD: Two years ago my life took a 180 degree turn. My hero was diagnosed with gastric cancer in the US.
I was with her and dad in the states and I took the extremely difficult decision of moving back to Mumbai, to live alone.

Imagine this: A disabled woman, living alone in Mumbai for the first time, with no help. It was psychotic and I don’t know where I got the strength.
The uncertainty of her survival was devastating. After coming back, I was left with so many responsibilities, of which I had no clue. I spent hours at the bank learning about EMIs, interest rates, and loans.

THREAD: #RIPPrekshaMehta

Preksha was only 25, an actress, and severely depressed, let that sink in.

The heartbreaking suicide of Preksha Mehta is proof that not everyone can understand the pain behind a smile. We need to talk about mental health more.
A smile can be misleading, just because someone seems to have their life together, is seldom the case. No matter how lavish someone’s life may seem on social/mainstream media, there’s more than what meets the eye!
We also need to stop being dismissive by saying things like, “You’re being over dramatic” or “Don’t think too much” or “It’s okay, others have it worse. You’re privileged.”

CAN WE PLEASE STOP BEING THIS WAY? FFS, BE THERE FOR THE PEOPLE YOU CARE ABOUT! LOOK OUT FOR EACH OTHER!
