i am 30 minutes into episode 1 of The Boys. cautiously interested in what this show is doing so far

i don't particularly enjoy #edgy comic book media, but so far this show seems to know who it's punching up against which is a good sign

so season 1 of The Boys was way less edgelordy than i expected. all its worst elements were pretty well outweighed by a surprisingly well-tuned sense of social satire. starlight and hughie are never the butt of the joke for being victims! ptsd is treated seriously! idk it's good.

feeling profoundly led on by the perception i'd gleaned of this being an unironic testosterone-fueled mark millar style grimdark watchmen clone. this show is actually pretty smart!

anyway on to season 2

god the fact that the super terrorists were literally created by the corporation to sell their defense contracts is SO smart

season 2's color palette already feels so much more saturated, i love it

not a fan of when characters' heads randomly explode. feels cheap

the deep's story would be a lot more compelling to me if he weren't, you know, a rapist. it's just really weird to do this like slapstick body dysmorphia angle on this guy. i'd rather just not see him at all

one thing i really like about this show is its portrayal of how power turns people into weird masochistic perverts. it's aligned with watchmen in that way

stripping away all cultural and metaphorical layers here, from a writing perspective i don't see the justification for kimiko not using the one language she has at her disposal to try to communicate to her comrades that the person they're going to kill is her brother. feels cheap

it's a minor thing, but little stuff like that starts to add up over time.

reflecting more on the show as i'm falling asleep, this really feels like a story from the bush administration. which fits if that's when the comic came out it's just weird that it hasn't been updated. idk
