THREAD on Factors Behind the Popularity of @aimim_national and Barrister @asadowaisi Sb beyond #Hyderabad:

(Let us first understand the reasons behind his popularity)

1/11
Most mainstream political parties and liberals accuse AIMIM and Owaisi of radicalizing and promoting extremism among Muslims as they are wary of losing even Muslim votes which they almost always take for granted.

2/11
While Majlis is accused of helping the BJP’s surge, it is the rapid spread of the Hindutva politics coupled with the failure of the secular forces that have led to the increasing popularity of Owaisi, particularly among youth as he often touches the right chord with them.
3/11
Take any issue related to Muslims, from lynching to anti-CAA protests, and it is often Owaisi speaking out inside parliament and outside.

The fact that he is an articulate orator and convincing public speaker adds to his charisma.

4/11
Look closely at the limited electoral successes of the AIMIM beyond Hyderabad, you will see another factor: states where Majlis has won or at least put up some fight (like UP), are those where BJP was ruling, or/and was almost certain to win the elections...

5/11
... the secular parties meanwhile appeared in disarray, at best. Even in Bihar, till September NDA’s victory appeared a foregone conclusion before Tejashwi Yadav did show some enthusiasm in campaigns, though that was not sufficient.

6/11
Facing discriminations from local government offices and at the hands of ever emboldened Hindutva brigade at each level, and being pushed to the wall, many Muslims in these pockets are disenchanted, not just from political parties but also from their local representatives.

7/11
This makes the ground fertile for a party like AIMIM as Owaisi echoes their sentiments and offers an alternative within the constitutional framework.

8/11
Coupled with this is another crucial factor of the local leadership. In Seemanchal, for example, Majlis found an experienced and credible local face in Aktharul Iman as well as some other local leaders many of whom had won or contested elections in the past...

9/11
For example, Shanawaz Alam, son of a former RJD heavyweight Taslimuddin, who won from Jokihat has been MLA and comes from an influential political family.

One needs to keep these in mind when talking about the scope/success of AIMIM in any other states (e.g. Bengal)

10/11
From tomorrow, each day I will elaborate on one of the challenges that AIMIM will face if they decide to contest the elections in Bengal.

1) THREAD on *The League of Militant Atheists*

How many of you have heard the name of one of the important arms of the Soviet regime - Soyuz Voinstvushchikh Bezbojnikov or the “Union of Militant Godless People”, also called the "League of Militant Atheists"?
2) The League was purportedly formed to fight "religious bigots" across the Soviet Union, from orthodox Christians to Muslims.

They brought out a newspaper Bezbozhnik (Godless, Atheist) in several languages between 1922 and 1941.
3) Bezbozhnik's Editor Yaroslavsky said: 'It is our duty to destroy every religious world-concept... If the destruction of ten million human beings, as happened in the last war, should be necessary for the triumph of one definite class, then that must be done and it will be don.'

1) THREAD on how Hindutva Zealots Harming India’s Goodwill in Muslim World, also trying to explain (put in perspective) why suddenly Arabs Twitterati (and SM influencers) are criticizing India (based on my article in @HeadlinesBeyond beyondheadlines.in/2020/04/are-hi… )
2) Sample this tweet by self-proclaimed Hindutva-nationalist-patriot @Payal_Rohatgi. Hindutva trolls like her are harming India's interests and damaging its relations with Arab countries by sharing such Fake News and other Islamophobic contents.

3) Little Background: Since the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, Muslims in India have been accused of doing “Corona jihad” after it came to light that a congregation called by Tablighi Jamaat at its Markaz turned into “super spreader”, resulting in one-third of known cases.

Some good news in these bleak times:

Advocate @AmanWadud called me a while ago and informed me that the Supreme Court has reduced the duration of detention from 3 to 2 years and also relaxed the conditions (bond surety charges) for those declared foreigners in Assam.

1/4
Petitioners had appealed for release of all "declared foreigners" from detention centres irrespective of duration and dispensing with the conditions of financial surety.

Still, this order implies that many of those arbitrarily declared foreigners will come out earlier.

2/4
It means that Asgar Ali from Kolkata whose family lives in Park Circus and has been in foreigners' detention center in Assam for over two years, will soon be released.

Aman Bhai, Asgar Ali's lawyer, told me that if all goes well he shall be able to be home this Ramazan.

1) THREAD on positive cases found from the people who attended #TablighiJamat gathering in #Nizamuddin, and the high decibel REACTION of the people.
2) Below I have attached screenshots of news reports of a Sikh Guru who might have spread the Corona-virus as he held religious gatherings, a celebrity singer who has definitely spread the virus in a party and has tested positive already....
3) Rich and powerful who returned home and roamed around the city, and foreigners who came to India as tourists or for work, and have all tested positive and unintentionally (or foolishly) spread the virus.

1) TREAD on the raging controversy surrounding #SharjeelImam (@_imaams ) based on the article I wrote in @HeadlinesBeyond beyondheadlines.in/2020/01/are-yo…
2) I woke up on Saturday afternoon to several messages on social media platforms sending video/stories by right-wing media/tweets on a short clip of Sharjeel Imam (IIT alumnus and PhD scholar at JNU) ...
3) ...where he is heard urging a crowd to “cut off” Assam and North East from India “forever, or at least for a month”. Many have even asked if I support him or oppose his views.

1)Many International publications and some Indian contributors too have been writing on how if BJP wins again, it will be doomsday for India's Muslims.

MY TAKE IN THIS THREAD
2) I do not know who is forming the government, we will know tomorrow. But if exit polls are any indications, let me put it on record that India's Muslims are the most resilient community, we have seen the worst forms of discriminations post-partition.
3) We have witnessed riots and pogroms, we witnessed Babri demolition, but we have survived and together with little support from government managed quite well despite some shortcomings.
