My husband & I were talking tonight about some of our favourite #yeg restaurants & bars, worried about which ones will make it through this. See, we both spent many years working in the hospitality industry. In fact, it's how we met. #ableg
I always say that I grew up in restaurants. My dad trained in hotel mgmt & when he came to Canada, he ran hotels & restaurants. It's what brought my family from Ontario to Alberta when I was 4. At a young age, I was taught how to behave properly in a restaurant & try new foods.
I worked in restaurants & bars for years to pay my way through university. My husband did the same & was an owner of a bar on Whyte Ave, where we met. Many of our dearest friends to this day are those we met in the "industry". And we learned incredible skills we still use now.
I say this because I have a deep love for the hospitality industry. It's part of the best experiences of my life. And I've also always understood its fragility - for both the owners & the employees. It's why I worry so deeply for the industry now.
And it's because of my love for the people who take the risks to throw their heart & soul into opening a restaurant and for those who work endless hours often for low wages & little appreciation that I am frustrated by the UCP's failure to protect them & their livelihoods.
By letting contact tracing collapse, forcing servers & owners to enforce confusing restrictions, allowing community spread which rightly reduces public confidence in going out & denying these businesses & employees direct financial supports, the gov't is ensuring their failure.
Those who work in restaurants - whether front or back of house - have little to no job security or ability to walk away from paid work because they feel unsafe. Owners feel little choice but to keep their doors open to pay the bills.
Failing to control COVID does NOT help businesses. It drags out their demise and allows the virus to spread. What would help is the measures for small businesses that we've been calling for - albertasfuture.ca/albertas-futur….
If we want to help businesses survive, we have to beat COVID. We need to provide real support to them & their employees. That's how we support the economy. By supporting people. I don't want to hear about another restaurant closing. I love the industry too much. #ableg

First, they don’t want to debate their disastrous Bill 47. That’s the Bill that rolls back protections & supports for workers who are sick/injured at work & who are unsafe at work. During a pandemic. When more workers than ever are unsafe. #ableg
Second, they want to get out of the public eye during their disastrous handling of the pandemic. Being at the Legislature means Question Period & debate & daily questions from the media. They want to hide as Albertans are sick, dying, & their businesses are collapsing. #ableg
Great to see the @CalgaryChamber recognize child care as an economic necessity and highlight the Early Learning & Child Care proposal put forward by the @abndpcaucus as part of Alberta's Future. #ableg#abfuture
One question that arose during the online consultation I held last week was how to get employers & businesses more involved in ensuring their employees have access to quality child care. The pandemic has certainly highlighted for employers that this is a key issue for them too.
I've held great conversations with the @CalgaryChamber, @EdmontonChamber & @albertachambers on this & it was clear that they are very engaged on this issue as well. Ensuring that Alberta parents can get back to work is an economic issue for all of us. #ableg
I don’t care about a statute. I care about a govt has no plan to get us out of the financial hole their choices have made worse. I care about kids going back to schools that aren’t as safe as they should be because the govt won’t put in the money or time to do it right. #ableg
I care about women’s participation in the workforce being pushed back 30 years. I care about our doctors being driven out of the province. I care about a govt so focused on ideology they are driving away investment & innovation. #ableg
I care about children with disabilities being abandoned by this govt. I care about ensuring we are protecting our environment in a sustainable way so this province can continue to support my kids & their kids. #ableg
I almost ignored this tweet entirely because it’s just so weak & devoid of fact. But who am I to pass on an opportunity to enlighten a Minister with evidence? Minister @prasadpandayyc, please take the time to consider the following: #ableg
“Unlike past recessions, where job losses were concentrated in manufacturing & construction & most of the unemployed were men, this recession is concentrated in the service sector, & most of the unemployed are women.” (from conservative @KenBoessenkool)theglobeandmail.com/amp/opinion/ar…
I had my first taste of conspiracy theories meeting hostile sexism when I was accused of somehow blocking a UCP Minister from speaking at a BLM rally. A rally that I had absolutely no part in organizing nor had I ever met the organizers. #ableg
The most bizarre turn was how the trolls went into a frenzy accusing me of being racist but even more bizarrely, a racist “white woman”. Say what? Never did I think I’d have to clarify on social media that I’m not white. 🤦🏽♀️#ableg
And the UCP actively encouraged this ridiculous conspiracy theory even though they knew it wasn’t true. Because it supported their narrative. #ableg
A woman reports a male coworker is intimidating her in her workplace to the person responsible for ensuring the workplace is safe & orderly. That person orders the woman to withdraw the report & apologize for making it. When she refuses, he removes her from the workplace. #ableg
This is what @NickMilliken did to @MarieFrRenaud yesterday in the Legislature. It is irrelevant whether the cameras caught the intimidating conduct. It is irrelevant whether or not that conduct would be considered intimidating to anyone else. #ableg
What matters is the message sent loud & clear to any woman in the Legislature - you will remain silent and take it. And if you dare speak up, you will be targeted and punished. #ableg
