Burchill is in good company: in 2018, UKIP’s Gerard Batten called the prophet Muhammad a 'paedophile' at a rally for far-right leader Tommy Robinson.

Also in 2018, the @ECHR_CEDH ruled that calling the Prophet Muhammad a paedophile was NOT protected by freedom of speech laws. 🧐
Following the conviction of an Austrian woman for branding Muhammed a pedophile in 2009, the #ECHR ruled that while religions were not exempt from criticism or denial of their beliefs, the woman's comments were not objective & lacked historical context.

newsweek.com/calling-prophe…
The #ECHR said her language "could only be understood as having been aimed at demonstrating that Muhammad was not worthy of worship" & were designed to belittle Islam.

The court also noted the difference between pedophilia and child marriage.
The woman - like Burchill - had failed to show "that his primary sexual interest in Aisha had been her not yet having reached puberty or that his other wives or concubines had been similarly young."
In particular, the #ECHR also said the applicant "had disregarded the fact that the marriage with Aisha had continued until the Prophet's death, when she had already turned eighteen and had therefore passed the age of puberty".
The seven-judge panel also stated it was unacceptable "to pack incriminating statements into the wrapping of an otherwise acceptable expression of opinion & claim that this rendered passable those statements exceeding the permissible limits of freedom of expression."

Did you know that in the 1860s Missouri, the term #snowflake was used by abolitionists to refer to those who opposed the abolition of slavery?

The term referred to those valuing white over black people: 'Snowflakes' hoped slavery would survive the civil war.

#BlackLivesMatter Image
The Snowflakes were contrasted with he 'Claybanks' (based on the color of the local clay) who wanted a gradual transition out of slavery for slaves, & the 'Charcoals'/'Brown Radicals', who wanted immediate emancipation for black people.

And did you know that #woke became a byword for social awareness in 2008, with Erykah Badu’s song “Master Teacher”?

'Stay woke' became used in parts of the black community for those who were self-aware, who questioned the dominant paradigm, & who strived for something better. Image

A THREAD on disturbing fascist tendencies in Britain, which should concern us all.

Cosmopolitan conservatives often support international cooperation & admired elite culture in other countries, but throughout history, Fascists espouse extreme nationalism & cultural parochialism.
Fascist ideologues teach that national identity is the foundation of individual identity & should not be corrupted by foreign influences, especially if they are left-wing.

For example, Nazism condemned Marxist & liberal internationalisms as threats to German national unity.
Fascists in general want to replace internationalist class solidarity with nationalist class collaboration.

Unlike democratic conservatives, fascists accuse their political opponents of being less “patriotic” than they, sometimes even labeling them “traitors.”

Donald Trump is undoubtedly - & by far - the worst President in US history.

Despite his bitter, fanatical & delusional supporters, the whole world - & most Americans - know this to be true.

It is now beyond a shadow of any doubt. Image
During the Great Recession of 2007-9, the US economy lost approximately 9 million jobs.

By April, the pandemic recession had seen nearly 10 million unemployment claims in just two weeks, & the unemployment rate was 13% - the highest since the Great Depression ended 80 years ago. Image
Far worse is the human carnage.

The richest nation on earth has more confirmed #coronavirus cases than anywhere else.

Trump claimed on February 26th: “Within a couple of days, it’s going to be down to close to zero. That’s a pretty good job we’ve done.”

Results of elections over the last five years signal to Progressives that we cannot simply continue thinking in traditional ways, proposing the usual, conventional solutions & hoping the pendulum could shift in their favour.

We need to wake the fuck up.

progressivepost.eu/wp-content/upl…
As a result of growing socio-economic inequality; the acceleration of economic, social & technological changes; changes in the voter base of social democratic parties; as well as numerous other global trends, many liberal democracies are led by populist politicians.

What to do?
In the EU, roughly a quarter of likely voters vote for populist politicians, whose actions centre on fighting against some outside enemy, the rejection of political pluralism & the irreconcilable conflict between the “people” & the elites - all very reminiscent of 1930s Germany.

Fascinating, wide-ranging analysis by @jemgilbert on the strengths, weaknesses & challenges facing the contemporary Left, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Well worth reading all of it. (Summary below).

opendemocracy.net/en/we-lost-bec…
The professional political class, & the interests it represents (finance capital/Big Tech) have fought off a democratic assault by convincing affluent professionals that the Left is a threat to their most cherished values: meritocratic, individualistic, cosmopolitan liberalism.
"The world-view of older voters with low-education is heavily shaped by the power of the tabloid press & its ideological allies online in the UK; by the media constellation organised around Fox News in the US."
