BREAKING—“New variant" (mutation) of #SARSCoV2 has been identified, believed to be causing faster spread, UK Health Secretary said. Its spread is growing faster than existing variant, w/ over 1,000 cases found, "predominantly in south of England". #COVID19 news.sky.com/story/new-vari…
2) UK has notified the @WHO. The new variant was officially identified for first time last week. Hancock told MPs there is currently "nothing to suggest" this variant is more likely to cause serious symptoms, adding that it is highly unlikely that it won't respond to a vaccine.
3) We’ve seen mink mutations of #SARSCoV2 before too. But this is why we gotta stop this. The longer the virus circulates, the greater the chance of this happening more until one day we get really “unlucky”.
4) Here is the previous 🧵 of a mutation in minks that was then transmitted back to humans... and what it means 👇
5) “"And the latest clinical advice is that it's highly unlikely this mutation would fail to respond to a vaccine," he told MPs.
The WHO has been informed and government scientists are studying the new variant at its facility at Porton Down, Mr Hancock added.”
6) BBC coverage is similar. Based on same quotes.
"We've currently identified over 1,000 cases with this variant predominantly in the South of England although cases have been identified in nearly 60 different local authority areas.
7) “"We do not know the extent to which this is because of the new variant but no matter its cause we have to take swift and decisive action which unfortunately is absolutely essential to control this deadly disease while the vaccine is rolled out."

📍Update: “There is actually 17 changes that would affect protein structure in some way that distinguish this variant from other variants that are circulating—which is a lot. It’s striking.” Dr Nick Loman @pathogenomenick says. Research ongoing. #SARSCoV2 dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9…
3) The new strain of coronavirus spreading through Britain has a 'striking' amount of mutations, scientists have claimed.
UK's Covid-19 Genomics UK Consortium who have been investigating the evolved strain, say they have uncovered 17 alterations, which they described as 'a lot'.
BREAKING: US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is now quarantined after contacting someone at State Dept with #COVID19. Pompeo recently also threw a large party with 900 invitees at the State Dept.
Pompeo was supposed to meet Biden’s Sec State nominee Tony Blinken tomorrow.

JUST IN—The new “variant” discovered in UK of the #SARSCoV2 virus is indeed a mutation within the critical “spike” protein portion of the virus used to infect human cells. UK health minister warned on Monday it may have increased transmission. #COVID19 🧵 reuters.com/article/health…
2) “British scientists are trying to establish whether the rapid spread in southern England of a new variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 is linked to key mutations they have detected in the strain, they said on Tuesday.
3) “"Efforts are under way to confirm whether or not any of these mutations are contributing to increased transmission," the scientists, from the COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium,
NEW—CDC was truly suffocated by Trump WH at every turn. Kyle McGowan, a former chief of staff at CDC, and his deputy, Amanda Campbell, witnessed WH dismissal of science, WH’s slow suffocation of CDC’s voice, meddling in messages & siphoning of CDC budget. nytimes.com/2020/12/16/us/…
2) ““Everyone wants to describe the day that the light switch flipped—It didn’t happen that way—more of like a hand grasping something, and it slowly closes, closes, closes, closes until you realize that, middle of the summer, it has a complete grasp on everything at the CDC”
3) “Mr. McGowan and Ms. Campbell, both 34, say they tried to protect their colleagues against political meddling from WH and HHS but was largely stifled by the Trump administration.
Respect for Tom Cruise for calling out his film crew member for breaking #COVID19 safety protocols. He actually puts up some good arguments that literally the entire Hollywood film industry and thousands of people’s livelihoods are on the line.
3) But I say we need to compartmentalize a little here— #COVID19 risk is serious and real. And him calling out endangering unsafe behavior is important.
First let’s survive this pandemic, then we can live to debate Tom Cruise’s other actions another day!
