Some of the same people who complain that critics of Critical Race Theory don’t define our terms (we do) use the phrase “Christian nationalism” without the slightest clue about what they’re saying. Honestly, I think I have a better grasp on what it is than most people who use it.
And it’s crazy how many REFUSE to define it! It’s the same Kafka trap we see from White Fragility crowd: if you have to ask, or if you defend yourself, you’re guilty. But here’s what I’ve gathered CN *actually* means vs how people erroneously mean it:
The belief that America is God’s chosen nation, that we are who is prophesied about in the OT, not Israel or the church. That our righteousness is tied to patriotism, &, as of this era, patriotism is tied to Trump support. Therefore part of being a christian is supporting Trump.
The light vs darkness battle to Christian nationalists is patriots vs. globalists, not necessarily Christ & his church vs. Satan. Trump has become the mascot for that, despite his ostensibly not being a Christian himself. So, I think that is CN/“Trumpism.” & it’s 100% wrong.
Now, how I think many progressives, maybe or maybe not unbeknownst to Beth & Russell Moore (no relation ;), is that CN is any Christian who loves their country, believes in a leader prioritizing the needs of their constituents & using the Bible to inform their views of issues.
It’s also used to describe people who are conservative and voted for Trump, whether or not they actually espouse anything close to CN/Trumpism. That all, of course, is silly.
Lots of Christians love their country. Lots of Christians believe that a president should prioritize the welfare of their constituents (just like a good mayor prioritizes the needs of his city). Christians, like all people, allow their beliefs to inform their views. They’re not CN
I’ve also seen a definition that says CN proponents encourage Christian discourse & engagement in politics & culture. Ok, so Christians are supposed to check their views at the door, but secularists aren’t?
Was William Wilberforce a “Christian nationalist” for being motivated by the gospel to lead the way for the abolition of slavery? Were the founders Christian nationalists for declaring all people are created equal by God with certain rights?
I’m afraid when the phrase is used in this way, it’s a tactic to scare Christians away from engaging faithfully in politics and culture. In tricking them into believing secularism is neutral and must be donned before entering the public square. Don’t fall for it.
All this said, define your terms! Critics of CRT have taken PAINS to specifically & consistently define CRT & point out what exactly it looks/sounds like. I sometimes wonder, though, if vagueness is the point, because discussion isn’t the goal for some. It’s self-righteousness.🤷🏼♀️

One more thought about CRT & Christianity, as well as “Christian Nationalism.” The theology inspired by CRT is Black Liberation Theology. See last thread for explanation. My assertion is that Black Liberation Theology & Christian Nationalism are similar forms of idolatry.
BLT centers black liberation in its understanding of Christianity and Scripture. CN centers American liberation. BLT sees the eternal fight as between non-white folks and white oppressors. CN sees the eternal fight as between patriots & globalists.
BLT sees black people’s journey as analogous to Israel’s history. CN sees America’s journey that way. They both believe “their” people as the *real* chosen people. (I explained what CN actually is in a thread yesterday.)
The policy of shutting down schools & businesses is rooted in a secular, materialist worldview that views humans as merely bodies. Thus it prioritizes “stopping” a physical illness at the expense of a person’s emotional and spiritual well-being.
It’s a good lesson in how leftism views people—with a lopsided emphasis on nurture over nature. Leftism is based on this erroneous materialist view of humans as malleable objects that can adapt to the wishes of the political & cultural powers that be.
In the context of COVID restrictions, the idea from the left is that people will be fine, especially if we give them $ to live. But people need more than $. People need interaction, community, spiritual nourishment, purpose found through productivity.
Ironically, many of the people calling this tweet privileged are the same ones who fight against school choice & support teachers unions, both of which actively work against underprivileged students...
My stance is: every parent, regardless of socioeconomic status, should have options in their child’s education. School choice programs that allow $ to follow the child rather than funding institutions create competition between schools that incentivizes better spending & teaching
In some cases, the local public school may very well be the best option for their child. But if not, they should have the freedom & funds to go elsewhere. Teachers unions fight against this, bc, like most left wing institutions, they don’t like competition or accountability.
Read your piece, and I wish you would have consulted with a Christian pro-lifer before writing it, because there are some glaring misunderstandings. Here to help:
1) "The Bible never directly discusses abortion:" Abortion is murder. The biblical command against murder is clear.
2) "[Exodus 21:22] suggests that the Bible treats a fetal life as less than a human life:" No, it doesn't. The passage says that unintentionally causing a woman requires a fine. That's because it's manslaughter, which God views/punishes differently than murder (Ex. 21:13)
Furthermore, you distinguishing "human life" from "fetal life" is unscientific nonsense. Whether or not you believe fetuses have inherent value, they are human beings. That's a biological fact.
I have tried very hard to sincerely understand how someone who identifies as a Christian conservative can vote for Joe Biden. Ive asked, Ive read, Ive engaged. I am not exaggerating when I tell you I have gotten nothing close to a coherent reason.
If you don’t vote for Trump as a Christian conservative, ok, I get it. We are not in total agreement, but I understand. I cannot for the life of me understand how a Christian conservative can vote Biden. It defies all reasoning.
They all insist they’re not voting on emotion. They care about abortion. They believe in religious liberty. But they still think Biden will unify and lead us well. I don’t doubt their sincerity, so I have to assume they are simply grossly misinformed.
