This year has been so tough (more so for some than others) and I anticipate next year will be worse. But I was just reminiscing about some of my favourite parts of the year, so indulge me while I share...
The first few weeks of lockdown where everyone tried to make zoom parties happen and we were all on houseparty dropping in on convos with people we hardly know.
Everytime someone’s mic was off during a meeting and you had to tell them and then everyone’s like “haha when will we learn!!”
The first couple of months where we asked each other how we were, and properly listened to each other’s answers
Somehow ending up living back with my family during the first wave and finding it super healing to cook, and chat, and build a routine together. It reminded us of tough times in our past and how far we have come.
Witnessing my brother become a really good cook!!!!!!
Experiencing how years of solidarity building amongst communities could really make such a big impact in times of crisis. The grass roots effort to look out for each other was incredible. I’m endlessly proud, inspired, affirmed by what we can all achieve together.
A new found love for milk in my tea. Not so Kurdish of me but delish nevertheless
The incidental and once-off phone chats I had with friends that I hadn’t spent as much time with before or ever met. My belly still feels warm just thinking about how nourishing those conversations were. Some off the top of my head include @TheMonaOgg @Dhakshayini_S ❤️
Spending time in beautiful Meanjin and contemplating a future life living with wonderful people and vitamin d!!
Sending gifts to mates in Vic second wave lockdown like food and cakes and flowers and toys and wine! Going to add that to my love languages
Starting to run after being inspired by @MerikiKO @son_nair @carlpires and actually liking it!
Finding a weird hippy therapy guy who fixed my chronic pain issues and now I have a plan to manage it
Helping several orgs I’m apart of navigate through the covid-19 shock and managing to come out the other end of this chapter relatively intact, with visions and partnerships that are stronger than ever
The moment people realised the economy and money is all made up and we can demand better for the people and society we live in
The group chats. And how the book club group chat was just everyone checking in every few weeks confirming to each other that we were all finding it hard to read or concentrate
Finally meeting @femmocollective and @sezmohammed !! And getting to see @maevemarsden Queerstories on the gold coast, and the cops walking past at the exact time someone was talking about shoving things up their butt *chefs kiss*
When things were really tough my besties ordering me cheeseburgers or fried chicken at what could objectively be deemed inappropriate times of the day
Seeing the positive impacts of a) having finally had the resources in the past few years to b) properly invest in my mental health, I was able to ride out the year relatively unscathed despite experiencing quite a lot of difficulty
Finally meeting a GP that listened to me and trusted me. That took me by complete surprise
My partner and I getting to spend the longest period of time together (when we’re usually jet setting and long distance) and having lunch and snacks slid onto my desk at the perfect time
Becoming closer to my mates even though we couldn’t be physically close
One of mums hilarious come backs at me going viral on twitter and her mocking the people who were taking it too seriously
Getting to spend proper time with my partners family and falling in love with them
The people at @Justice_Connect who have weathered storm after storm after storm, and have used crisis as a catalyst for progress and positive change!
The birds in queensland that yell rather than tweet. Sometime it sounds like a screamo band right outside my window
Seeing the great barrier reef for the first time and learning how to snorkel!
Witnessing Bolivia reclaim their democracy
Through adversity, grief and fear, watching my beloved queer and trans community come together to support each other after so many months apart
The memes when trump supposedly got covid
The pictures of people getting their first haircut after lockdown, having picnics and hugging beautiful babies they hadn’t met before

I’m so rageful at the bullshit, contempt & violence trans people experience every day. It’s just so unfair. How fragile is this cis patriarchal world that we try to subjugate people who just want to live and thrive outside of the gender binary. Stop killing the people we love!
It’s unacceptable that trans people have to live like this. The constant hyper vigilance must be so draining. Even worse if they are a woman, Black and/or disabled.

I try not to misdirect or appropriate anger when it’s not my experience, but my heart is so heavy right now!
Imagine being so committed to the total fallacy of biological essentialism that you deny people health care, community, work, education, dignity and safety just to prove your point.

Excuse me? You cannot police people out of a pandemic. This is horrific.
Firstly, imagine how these announcements frighten people and make them feel too worried about the attention and stigma of testing positive.
Then imagine they are in workplaces where they are already being discriminated against, paid minimum wage, their workplace hasn’t provided them the necessary PPE and they have to interact with a broad range of people who also don’t respect social distancing recommendations

If you're a victim of police misconduct during stage 3 shutdown, here is a tool that can help you. Increasing police discretionary powers during a pandemic will mean particular communities are going to be unfairly targeted, over policed, face prison time. We need accountability.

*How to hold broadcast media accountable for false racist reporting*
(A step by step thread)
Before anything, keep an eye on the safety of black people in your community. There is often a spike in hate crimes when racist reports are broadcasted.
1) Contact the broadcast channel directly and complain about the harmful consequences of their racist, unethical and hyperbolic reporting.
