Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: It is incredible that within 1 year of the virus being discovered, we already have a vaccine that’s 95% effective going into the arms of those caring for long-term care residents & the sickest patients in our hospitals. (1/11)
Any time there is a new vaccine, it can cause anxiety & questions. Canada has one of the most robust regulatory approval processes for new vaccines in the world. Health Canada moved quickly, but no steps were skipped. Rigorous testing & scrutiny was applied. (2/11)
The ingredients inside it are only those needed to keep the vaccine stable & safe. Clinical trials w/ 10s of thousands of ppl from multiple countries found no safety concerns. Health Canada is being cautious, making sure there is clear evidence before offering it to CDNs. (3/11)
Because this is a new vaccine, we will also be watching closely. Alberta will be working with all the other provinces and territories, and the Public Health Agency of Canada, to closely monitor all those who receive the vaccine for any adverse events. (4/11)
The benefits of vaccines outweigh the risk & save lives. We are taking every precaution & acting on clear evidence showing this vaccine works & is safe. When it is your turn, pls get immunized. It is an act of kindness – for yourself, your loved ones & your community. (5/11)
Over the last 24 hrs, we ID’d 1,270 new cases & completed about 17.5K new tests. Our positivity rate stands at about 7.3%. 749 ppl are in hospital, incl 139 in ICU. AHS is taking steps to increase capacity & expand the number of acute care & ICU beds. (6/11)
Sadly, 16 new deaths were reported in the last 24hrs. My thoughts are w/ those grieving their loss. Each death is a reminder it is vital to reduce spread quickly. In less than 10 months, more ABs have died from COVID-19 than from influenza in the last 10 yrs combined. (7/11)
There are active alerts/outbreaks in 452 schools (19%) w/ 1,964 cases incl 128 on watch. This virus affects all of us. Adults in their 20s – 30s are the largest group of active cases we have w/ 32k+ contracting COVID-19 in AB incl 380+ hospitalized & 8 deaths. (8/11)
If you gathered every Albertan 20- 39 diagnosed with COVID-19, they would fill the Saddledome in Calgary, the Centrium in Red Deer & ENMAX Centre in Lethbridge. The virus does not discriminate and it can have long term & potentially devastating impacts on people’s health. (9/11)
It is vital for everyone to avoid in-person interactions whenever possible. The less we interact with others, the lower the chance that we’ll catch the virus, or pass it on to someone else. (10/11)
For the rest of the month, we all need to make sacrifices incl saying no to holiday parties or other gatherings. Instead, connect online. We are all protecting each other, and the sacrifices we make in the coming weeks will help determine what the new year brings. (11/11)

Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: As of last night, 394 healthcare workers had received their 1st dose of vaccine. We are starting w/critical healthcare & long-term care workers & those living in continuing care to save lives & protect our healthcare system. (1/12)
We are moving quickly to make the doses we receive available to those who are eligible, and will continue to do that going forward. There are about 4.4 million Albertans. Please be patient & supportive of those in the initial groups to be immunized. (2/12)
Over the last 24 hrs, we ID’d 1,571 new cases & completed about 19.8K tests. Our positivity rate stands at about 7.9%. There are 763 ppl in hospital incl 138 in ICU. There are active alerts/outbreaks in 450 schools, or about 19% of schools in the prov w/126 on watch. (3/12)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: Over the last 24hrs, we identified 1,341 cases & completed 16K+ tests. Our positivity rate stands at about 8.2%. 742 ppl are in hospital incl 137 in ICU. These numbers continue to be alarming. (1/6)
Other health concerns still occur: babies born, heart attacks & ppl having car collisions. Every COVID-19 hospitalization is an additional stress on the acute care system. We each need to continue to do all we can to help prevent one more person from ending up in hospital. (2/6)
Sadly, 11 new deaths were reported in the past 24 hrs. My thoughts and sympathies are with all those grieving the loss of family or friends from any cause. There are active alerts/outbreaks in 456 schools - about 19 % - w/ 1,943 cases incl 129 schools on watch. (3/6)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: We ID’d 1,887 cases yesterday & completed 20K+ tests. There are 716 people in hospital, incl 136 in ICU. 15 deaths were reported. My sympathies go out to all those grieving a loss today. (1/6)
R value for AB over the last 7 days was 0.98 - 1.0 in #YEG Zone. 0.92 in #YYC Zone & 1.01 in the rest of AB. This metric describes whether transmission increased, decreased or stayed the same. What last week’s value seems to indicate is that cases plateaued over the week. (2/6)
This is better than an increase, but a plateau is not enough. Our new daily case numbers remain high & hospitalization/ICU admissions continue to grow. What we need to achieve together is several weeks of R value well below 1 w/ a corresponding decrease in new case numbers. (3/6)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. There are 1,717 new cases with 20,562 active cases. Sadly, I must also report an additional 22 deaths. My heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of these individuals and to all Albertans mourning a loved one today. (1/4)
There are currently 681 people in hospital with 136 people in ICU. On Dec. 12, an additional 21,725 tests were completed, giving a positivity rate of 7.9%. This brings the total number of completed tests to 2,507,588 since the pandemic began. (2/4)
Business restrictions have now come into effect across Alberta. Some businesses are required to close while others must reduce their capacity or limit their access to the public. (3/4)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. There are 1,590 new cases with 20,072 active case across Alberta. I’m sad to report an additional 13 deaths. My condolences to the families and friends mourning a loved one today. (1/4)
There are currently 681 people in hospital with 128 people in ICU. Ad additional 20,227 tests were completed on Dec. 11, bringing the total number of tests to 2,485,751. (2/4)
The next four weeks will be difficult for all of us when we’re so used to being in the company of friends and family to celebrate the holidays. Please consider ways that you can celebrate safely by connecting with your loved ones virtually. (3/4)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update. Over the last 24 hrs, we identified 1,738 new cases & completed about 21K tests. Our prov positivity rate is about 8.3%, w/ 20,261 active cases. 684 ppl are in hospital, including 123 in ICU. (1/11)
Sadly, 18 deaths were reported. I know gathering restrictions continue to make it challenging for anyone who has lost a loved one to any cause, to grieve in the ways we are used to. Please reach out to those you know who are navigating a difficult time. (2/11)
There are alerts/outbreaks in 458 schools - about 19 % - w/ 1,947 active cases incl 293 with outbreaks, 123 on watch. (3/11)
