From 2015 - informative article by @SJha1618 on growth trajectory of Army Aviation Corps. Would be interesting to see where we stand today.
news18.com/blogs/india/sa…
- There was a 2015 report from Tehelka (link not working now) which mentioned that Indian Army's Akash Missile Regiment has 6 batteries.
- Which will explain this image which appeared in 2017.
- For come reason, what would normally be termed as a Battery, is called as a Troop
+ Image
+ It is quite possible, that 6 troops equal to 3 batteries with 2 x troops per battery.
- Which can possibly explain this 2018 report that IA is getting 2 x Akash Regiments with 6 batteries.
- 6 troops/3 batteries or 6 batteries (assuming troop = battery)+
economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/a…
+ means Indian Army's Akash Regiment is a massive unit.
- 24 launchers, with 3 missiles/launcher, means 72 ready-to-fire missiles, 7 x 3D-Central Acquisition Radar, 6 x Troop Level Radar (Rajendra-III).
- Coverage would be excellent
- Multiple the above by 2 for 2 x Akash Regts+
+
- Unlike older times, when A Grade equipment went to Strike Corps, the two Akash Regiments have gone to Pivot Corps, i.e. Bhatinda based 10 Corps and Jalandher based 11 Corps.
- In fact, analysis of open source data shows that a SA-6/Kvardat Group from a Strike Corps was +
+ shifted to Desert Corps, or 12 Corps.

India moved first two tank regiments as part of newly raised (I) Armored Bde under 14 Corps in 2014-15 period and third one was post 2016.

- 9 Para (SF) had been awarded 04 Ashok Chakras till date in CI Ops. And all of them posthumously
- It received 'Bravest of Brave' citation from the COAS post Kargil Ops.
- It also led a complex rescue in Sierra Leone known as 'Op Khukri' to successfully rescue Indian troops
- 9 Para (Special Forces) is the 'mother' battalion of Para (Special Forces) units in IA.
- An ad-hoc Commando unit raised in 1965 was raised as 9th Battalion (Commando) of Parachute Regiment in 1966. It was split in 1967 and 10th Para (Commando) battalion
was raised.
+
- In 1978, 1 Para Battalion of Parachute Regiment was converted into third Para (Commando) battalion.
+ These three are original Para (Commando) battalions. The fourth Para (Cdo) Bn was raised by converting 21st Bn of Maratha Light Infantry into 21 Para (Commando) Bn in mid-90s

Thread from 2017 on the evolving scenario with respect to the Army Aviation Corps covering Dhruv, LCH and WSI-Dhruv/ Rudra helicopters.
Posting screen-shots of the above thread for record. ImageImageImage
Some thoughts on the unnecessarily controversial term Cold Start Doctrine #CSD. CSD actually became a tool for Pakistan to scare West (read USA) as to how this doctrine is destabilizing the conventional deterrence and Indian establishment became shy of even mentioning it + ImageImage
+ Part-II of the above. ImageImage
10 Infantry Division in Akhnoor became a RAPID - Reorganized Plains Infantry Division. This is the 7th known RAPID of the Indian Army.
Some pointers on the RAPIDs - ImageImage
Important thread which brings out key points about the Arjun tank
Reproducing my thoughts on what holds back large scale production and induction of Arjun tanks in the Indian Army -
(1) I've said this before, there are 4 main reasons holding back large scale Arjun induction in the army.
[ONE] - Organizational inertia.
+
+
- 2 plus generations of Armored Corps officers have cut their teeth in T-72 and now, T-90.
- Arjun is everything which T-72/90 is not.
- 2-man vs 3-man turret and size argument predates even before first Arjun tanks had entered service with 43rd Armored Regiment
+
+
- General SR Chowdhary mentions about it in his autobiography.
- He was driving force behind induction of 15 tanks in 43rd Armored Regiment.
- Idea was that an operational unit should be giving feedback to DRDO.
[SECOND] - Bad blood between DPSU (CVRDE/HVF) and the IA
+
+
- HVF has very patchy production record. There is already a massive backlog of T-72 & T-90 overhaul.
- IA simply has no faith in ability of HVF to support a weapon system over it's lifetime.
- With T-90, you always have the Russians to fall back upon
- take example of Su-30 +
+
- production at HAL. HAL has missed deadlines repeatedly and as a result, larger work share has been outsourced to Russians to ensure timely delivery.
- Same is the case with T-90; when push comes, you always have Russians.
- And then there is 67% (?) commonality between
+
+
T-72 and T-90.
- For an army with 2500+ tanks, this is a big plus.
[THIRD] - Corruption.
- The unique scenario of dysfunctional R&D-Production set-up, unwillingness to back domestic product by IA due to multiple reason, genuine pressing requirement for new MBT
+
+
created a conducive environment for pushing foreign product with attendant palm greasing.
- T-90 induction has gained so much momentum that it is unstoppable.
- Badly worded and enforced contracts mean Russians get away with delaying/denying TOT and still get repeat
+
+
orders for new batches of T-90.
- Russian shenanigans held up production at HVF and this delay was used as reason for giving new order of importing directly from Russia!!!
- And IA as the customer has no say in all this! It is happy that AT LEAST, it gets required tanks
+
+
- HVF-CVRDE-Arjun is one of the few islands of completely broken system in our set-up.
- Unless IA gets assurance that HVF can sustain the product in long term, this logjam will not break. And a powerful tank like Arjun will continue to suffer from apathy.
+
+
[FOUR] - Sum of parts of less than the whole
- This is an opinion I've arrived at after speaking with some ex-armored corps officials.
- While individual systems of Arjun might be superior to say, T-90, the whole system does not come together in a manner to deliver the
+
+
whole weight of the sub-systems.
- The superiority of individual systems shows-up in the comparative tests between T-90 and Arjun but yet, a tank man prefers a T-90 over Arjun.
- The solution to this logjam is more interaction between IA and DRDO and not throwing the baby+
+ out with the bathwater.
(Sub-Thread Logistics) - How Indian Army and IAF work closely together to air-maintain Indian Army positions spread across forward areas in NE and Ladakh/Siachen. Many of these posts are a couple of days march from nearest road-head.
(Sub-Thread Armor) - On Indian Army RFP for 'Future Ready Combat Vehicle' (FCRV) to replace 1,770 T-72 tanks.
- This image is doing the rounds of SM stating these are IA soldiers in Siachen.
- Well, they are not!
- Appreciate the sentiment but these are Russian soldiers taking part in winter exercise. Image
Latest personal fire-arms and rocket launcher
YET
Squad Automatic Weapon aka Light Machine Gun (LMG) dates from late-50s! And still going strong.
(On a serious note, another example of DRDO not able to develop LMG and MOD not able to import a suitable gun)
- IA inducts 10 meter short span bridge (SSB-10) (1st)
- DRDO has of late developed several MLC-70 Class (can carry 70 tons load) bridging equipment.
- Other bridging equipment are SSB-5 ( 5 meter) (2nd), SARVATRA (Multi-span with 15m/span) (4th), Modular Bridge-46 meters (3rd). ImageImageImageImage
- Rudra or WSI-Dhruv gunship participating in exercise with tanks and IFV during an exercise.
- But it is still missing an ATGM. Need to address this critical requirement quickly.

Rumour has it that OFB employees are going on strike to protest against this capitalist conspiracy to take orders away from them by resorting to such cheap tactics like higher efficiency, better quality and on-time/before time delivery.
- OM Shanti!
- Gone too soon.
- Was married only a month and a half ago. Can't even fathom what the wife, and parents, would be going through.
- Another reminder of ever present danger to life and limb while serving in the uniform.
timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/jodhpur/n…
This was (is?) army's largest hospital in terms of beds. It was spread across a large area and used to be housed in barrack type of buildings with few modern buildings in-between. Putting most of it in one place will ensure convenience to patients.
I've seen less than charitable comments being made by people about such labs of DRDO which deal with Life Sciences. Need to appreciate such efforts.
So, what is the takeaway from this picture?
That updated 130mm, M-46 gun, known as Sharang (updated to 155/45 caliber) has been deployed on the LOC.
- If, we cannot ensure timely dues to family of a fallen soldier, than we need to hang our heads in shame.
- It seems defense bureaucracy is answerable to no-one, is afraid of no-one, and of course, lacks empathy for those it is supposed to serve.
tribuneindia.com/news/nation/30…
This needs to be seen in context of the dynamics unique to the armed forces. I hope we don't get R&D from usual sources.
- Today is Lohri/Sankranti special!
- Indian Army has gone for domestic drones for its infantry units.
- These will most likely be employed at Company level.
- Will help to see over the proverbial hill.

Beautiful song, beautiful sentiments.
Important to track when the purchases under Rs 130,000 Crore enter service.
As you sleep tonight, please remember, there are 100 army families out there, who lost their loved one while serving in the uniform. While doing his duty, while serving the motherland, while protecting you and me. True to their oath, they went beyond the call of duty.

Of these hundred men, some received Sena Medal (Gallantry) during the #ArmyDay function. Medals were received by either their wife or mother.

- First time ever in the history of FEI that an Indian equestrian has been ranked amongst top three in the world!
- Both 61 Cavalry and ASC have a rich history of contributing national and international equestrians.
- This is exasperating!
- If I had my way, I would order larger qty of Dhanush (155/45) and replace older M-46 guns.
- Farm out production to pvt sector for faster delivery.
- Induct Dhanush based MGS.
- Increase ATAGS order to min 20 regiments.
economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/defence/a…
That is some serious height! 😲😲😲
If India had also achieved freedom of thought in 1947, people would've taught more about the glorious history of Jats around present day NCR and their continuous fight against the Mughals. How many have even heard, forget read about the Battle of Tilpat?
I think that's General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, and his Chief of Staff, doing the honors. I doubt there are Subedar Major Sahabs who's piping ceremony has been done by such senior officers. But then, he's a Param Vir Chakra award recipient!
When you've a stupid smile on your face after looking at this pic, and your wife's wondering what you are staring at on the screen?😋

@pratyasharath 1. Buying a house for self use is not an investment.
2. Because unless you're in dire circumstances, you won't be selling or mortgaging it.
3. Plus, its a illiquid asset and can't be monetized easily.
4. Before buying a house, please check EMI is what % of your household income+
@pratyasharath +
5. Theoretically, if EMI is 30% of less of your HH income, you can buy a house.
6. Plus, in an ideal scenario, your HH income should increase and EMI as % of HH income will fall.
7. But ask yourself this - what is the kind of pressure EMI payment will have on other activities+
@pratyasharath + Travel, leisure, eating-out, kids education (can you send your kids in future to desired school) and most important of them all, impact on Saving!
8. Because you'll get 80% loan and 20% has to come from your pocket.
9. Even a standard Rs 50L house will require you to put up+

- An IAF veteran, whose TL is littered with explicit Hindu-phobic tweets, gets sacked by an airline, and we've some veterans, and @VishnuNDTV, talking about ethos, his previous service record & similar stuff.
- Would they've said the same if his content was deemed Islamophobic?
+
+
- And its funny that some veterans have just discovered ethos!
- I mean, if kind of language and mocking tone reserved for current CDS, or any Veteran who is perceived to be supporting GOI actions, is anything to go by, these ethos seem to be applied selectively.
- There are +
+ cohorts here.
- Veterans who oppose BJP and RSS, and by extension, the GOI.
- There is almost a Pavlovian response to every GOI action; it has to be bad, or bad-faith and what-have-you.
- Tragedy is that the political bias has infiltrated into military assessment as well.
