Nah. Trump survived the Access Hollywood tape with those voters.
The patriarchial view is that sexual assault and rape are natural results of "human nature." In other words, it doesn't bother them.

In fact, rape is a means of asserting patriarchial power.
My generation learned that rape is a means of asserting patriarchal power from ⤵️

You could see it play out in the Kavanaugh hearings, particularly in the right-wing defense of Kavanaugh.

I have a thread about that somewhere . . .
Here it is:
(If you wonder how I find my stuff so fast, it's all filed and categorized on my blog. Me = 🤓)
Rape is an unusual crime in that there is almost always room to deny.

"She consented" is a defense.

Until recently, a woman's sexual past was also a defense.

In the 19th century, a woman was not considered competent to testify in court.
Here is Ann Coulter offering the modern-day method of discounting a woman's testimony⤵️

A woman's "accusation" is actually her testimony. Testimony is evidence, to be weighed like any other evidence.

Coulter dismisses a woman's word.

There are, however, rapes that were always prosecuted.

If a White woman accused a Black man of rape, that pretty much settled it. He was convicted.

So, yes, I slightly misspoke when I said they were "cool" with rape.

Some rapes are not tolerated.
But the rapes are evaluated within the context of the hierarchy.

A powerful white man accused of rape was treated differently from a poor Black man.

Similarly who was raped or assaulted mattered.

Even after the Civil War, rape of a Black woman wasn't recognized as a crime.
And what evidence do you have that it was "nonconsensual" ?

A woman's word.

What evidence do you have that it was "forcible?"

In most cases, a woman's word.

What evidence can you have if women are not to be believed, as in the 19th century?

None.

I'm still getting pushback against the idea that members of the GOP are cool with rape.

Here's Steve King musing aloud that without rape, humanity wouldn't have survived.

They want to deny abortion in the case of rape.

Because women are mere vessels.

reuters.com/article/us-usa…
I remember when most of these statements made headlines⤵️

Not long ago, such ideas were commonplace.

Make America Great Again signals a reactionary desire to return to the past when "girls were girls and men were men." (quoting Archie Bunker)
I'm also old enough to remember when rape victims were asked what they were wearing.

The implication was obvious. Why wasn't she taking care to safeguard the goods?

For more on rape as a property crime, see:
It occurred to me that I addressed the "cool with rape" part, but not the phrase: "AH isn't proof of rape."
The Access Hollywood tape was evidence of sexual assault. In legal terms, it was a confession.

Like all evidence, it is evaluated for reliability.
I expanded this thread and put it on my blog, here: terikanefield-blog.com/rape-is-a-mean…

I guess if I'd really wanted to rile Twitter, I could have quoted Susan Brownmiller, who said rape is "a conscious process of intimidation by which all men keep all women in a state of fear."
I think one reason so many people were horrified and offended by this thread is that they imagined rape of a stranger.

Most rapes happen among people who know each other.
Date rape is hard to prove because she was willing with him.
Statutory rape is also rape.

I think the horrified people had a false image of "real rape." They didn't imagine a date gone wrong. They imagined a woman at knifepoint.

This topic usually works better when I start out with the history: Until recently, rape was a property crime.

To think there may still be people out there who don't know who Barbara Johns was.

What?! YOU don’t know who she was?

Well. On April 23, 1951, in Farmville, VA, Barbara Johns led a walkout of her segregated high school in protest of the deplorable and unfair conditions.

1/
She was 16. She led her walkout more than 4 years before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus, and before MLK, Jr. embraced nonviolence as the way to equality.

After she and her classmates turned the rural town of Farmville upside down, she called in the NAACP.

2/
The NAACP took their case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Barbara and her classmates became plaintiffs in Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark case that ended segregation in America.

Their case was combined with cases from other states.

The Georgia GOP civil war intensifies.

Trump retweeted Lin Wood, who informed @BrianKempGA and @GaSecofState that Trump will throw them in jail.

Wood is the guy who told GA Republicans to boycott the Senate runoffs.

(Both Kemp and Raffensperger say they voted for Trump)
Trump can't throw them in jail, but he can endanger their lives.

So much is stunning.
🔹It's now GOP officials who supported Trump, who are being targeted.
🔹Trump is targeting Georgia GOP, where early voting has started in the runoff election.
The firing of Barr is supposed to make you think that in the few weeks remaining, Trump can weaponize the DOJ to jail Kemp and Raffensperger. He can't: there are procedures for arrests and indictments, including judicial oversight.

This is equal parts horrifying and absurd. These are not real electors. There is not a "competing" slate of electors.

It's the Nevada GOP showing that they are completely unhinged from reality.
You see, Nevada certified its election for Biden on 11/24.
forbes.com/sites/alisondu…
Nevada law requires that the electors are legally bound to vote for whoever wins the presidential election in NV. apnews.com/article/electi…
Dear Nevada GOP:

It's time for Election Law 101.

Because of a complicated system we have called the electoral college, when you vote for president, you don't actually vote for president, you vote for a slate of electors.

The GOP electors lost when Trump lost the election.

Here it is. What is surely the last gasp of the strategy to accomplish a judicial coup d'état.

The Wisconsin Supreme Court decision.

Who is surprised? Nobody.

But it's still fun.

wicourts.gov/sc/opinion/Dis………

Reading it now . . .

1/
Petitioners sought to "invalidate the ballots" of more than 220,000 Wisconsin voters in Dane and Milwaukee Counties.

As with the other complaints, the issue wasn't that any voters did anything wrong; it's how the election was conducted.

1/
The doctrine of laches as applied to elections in a nutshell: You can't agree to the rules, wait to see how the election turns out, and then challenge the rules.

That's why lawyers kept saying the courts won't allow it, even if the judges are Republicans.

Reading recommendation: Rand Corp, "The Russian Firehose of Falsehoods Propaganda Model," includes advice on how to counter a rapid and continuous stream of lies.
rand.org/pubs/perspecti…

1/
The liar has a “shameless willingness” to tell outrageous lies that lots of people know are lies.

The liar doesn’t care about consistency.
He doesn’t care if it’s obvious he’s lying.
rand.org/pubs/perspecti…
In fact, that's the whole point.

Putin perfected the method.

2/
It seems to come naturally to Trump.

@TimothyDSnyder tells how reporters were often so astonished by Putin's outrageous lies, that they focused on the lies instead of Putin's latest atrocities.

The lies became the news.
The actual news gets pushed off the stage.
