Thread: Today on the Winter Solstice, one of the oldest traditions on the planet is played out at Newgrange, Ireland. Newgrange is older than the Pyramids & Stonehenge & was built between 3500-3200BC. Let’s take a look at this World Heritage Site & Solar Clock #WinterSolstice Image
As the sun rises on the Solstice it passes through a lightbox at the entrance to the tomb & travels down the 60ft passageway to a central chamber marking the shortest day of the year. ImageImageImage
As a professional historian & science these ideas influence my art. Pattern, like & colour are central to my work. There’s a 2 for 1 until the 6th January. Delivery before Christmas is available for Irish orders, today only.

Thread: A brief history of Irish art as demonstrated by its greatest painters, in my opinion. Here are images by Sir Frederick William Burton, Harry Clarke & Francis Bacon. Although relatively unknown outside Ireland I think these artists are worth studying. ImageImageImage
Due to constant warfare, suppression of native culture & the wiping out of the patronage of the cultural elite by English colonial forces the first oil painters in Ireland were of foreign origin. These included John Michael Wright (1679) & Gaspar Smitz (fl 1662-89) ImageImage
Irish people can still get my special offer in time for Christmas - here are the details

I couldn’t understand how mean the English were when I asked for a couple of biscuits etc. & if u ask for a glass of beer; it’s as if they were raised by wolves. & they don’t understand tea! I did my best to educate them but we may need to do a Cultural Revival for them again!
And with their fancy ‘One’ & their reading Academic Subjects. I had to explain to an Oxford Grad (of all things) that you read the Beano but study history! Jesus wept!
And they don’t know what a yoke is (item or pill). I blame Brexit 😉

I’d just like to call out the incredible support people like post workers, shop assistants, pharmacists & people in utilities etc have given this year. That’s on top of the entire medical & charity communities, of course. This is particularly true for people living alone. ImageImage
Frontline retail workers have told me stories of people just coming into supermarkets & explaining that the chat with the till operator was the only one they’d had that day. Pharmacists, too. This Pandemic demonstrates we need to value everyone equally. ImageImage
I’m not seeking to minimise the work done by others but it struck me that we don’t recognise those chats as life-saving for so many. The Irish post office is doing phenomenal work in checking in on isolated people. And Gardaí, particularly in rural areas, are doing great outreach ImageImage
