Some post-#Chanukah history - The Menorah, Rome, and Jerusalem.
THREAD
The Arch of Titus in Rome was erected in 82 CE to celebrate Roman Emperor Titus' victory over the Jews in Judea, including the siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE. The captive Jews are shown carrying sacred Temple vessels, including the golden menorah, away from Jerusalem to Rome.
In the 16th century Pope Paul IV forced Rome's Jews to recite an annual oath of submission to Christendom while standing under the arch. For centuries thereafter, Jews refused to walk underneath the arch.
When the State of Israel declared independence in 1948, the Roman Jewish community gathered at the arch and marched through it, but in the opposite direction – toward Jerusalem.
That same year, Israeli graphic designers Gabriel and Maxim Shamir took the image of the menorah from the Arch of Titus and made it the centerpiece of their submission in a national competition to design the official emblem of the new state. It was adopted by the Knesset in 1949.
The holiday of #Chanukah, together with all of Jewish, Roman, Christian, and Western history, testifies to the historic, continuing, eternal connection of the Jewish People and Jerusalem!
PS - It’s likely the gold Temple Menorah was melted down by the Romans centuries ago. But some people think it’s hidden deep in the Vatican basement... and we want it back!

Yes, Al-Qaeda was responsible for 9/11. But Al-Qaeda did not act alone. US Federal Courts have repeatedly held that IRAN and its proxy HEZBOLLAH were directly and materially responsible for the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. Here is the rest of the story.

THREAD #NeverForget
The 9/11 Commission report stated “there is strong evidence" implicating Iran and Hezbollah, requiring "further investigation by the US government.” Based on that, in 2004 hundreds of 9/11 families brought the case "Havlish et al v. Bin-Laden, Iran, et al" to Federal court.
After 7 yrs, in 2011 Judge George B. Daniels of the US District Court in Manhattan issued “Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law” that “The Islamic Republic of Iran…engaged in and supported terrorism as an instrument of foreign policy..” including aiding and abetting Al-Qaeda.

There is a 21st century Holocaust happening in China right now, and once again the world is completely indifferent. But YOU don't have to be. #BoycottChina

1M+ Uighur people, an ethnic/religious minority, are held in concentration forced labor camps, tortured, raped, murdered. Survivors report electrocution, beatings, unknown injections, & mental torture meant to break them psychologically as well as physically. #BoycottChina
Women of childbearing age are hunted down “dragnet-style”and undergo forced sterilization, abortions, and unknown drugs. At least half a million Uighur children have been separated from their families, placed in state “children shelters.” #BoycottChina

Twitter is full of racists/fools denying Jews' connection to Israel, perhaps because the return of Jews to Israel is so far-fetched, it's hard to grasp.

The astonishing nature of the Jewish return has a modern parallel, the exile of the Tibetans by the Chinese.
THREAD
Tibet was a small, ancient nation sitting at the confluence of two much larger rival cultures, with religious national leadership and temple worship at the focal point of its culture. It was conquered by an expansive empire, in this case Communist China, in 1959.
China exiled Tibetan leaders, destroyed their temples, renamed their country, and repopulated it with foreigners. The world has accepted this situation as normal, even as Tibetans in exile pray for their homeland and Tibetans who remain are brutally repressed.
Sound familiar?

The term “Talmudic Jew” is used by antisemites across Twitter to mean “evil conspiring Jew” or sometimes “fake Jew” bent on controlling the world. The truth is exactly the opposite. The Talmud is a book by an oppressed minority about how to live when you have no control. THREAD
The Talmud was written by Jews living under colonial rule in the Land of Israel and as refugees in what is now Iraq, driven from their homeland in Israel by European colonial imperialists. It’s a book by a minority people struggling to survive under majority oppression.
The Talmud is book by and for the powerless, people who don’t control their own land or fate and are acutely, painfully aware of these facts. It is a compendium of stories, traditions, and law by people whose stories, traditions, and laws have been upended by conquerors.

On this date in 1941, the Jews of Iraq were targeted by the Nazi-sympathizing Iraqi government for a vicious and deadly pogrom, called The Farhud. Hundreds of Jews were killed, thousands were injured, and Jewish life in Iraq was never the same.
THREAD
Within a decade Iraqi Jews lost most citizenship rights. Nearly all 120,000 Iraqi Jews fled or were expelled, their property and possessions confiscated. Thus ended a Jewish community that had been in Iraq for 2,600 years, predating the Arab-Muslim invasion by a millennia.
The Farhud was instigated by one of the 20thC's least known/greatest villains, Haj Amin al-Husseini, Mufti of Jerusalem. A partner of the Nazis, he influenced Palestinian nationalism, Ba’ath parties across the Mideast, and extremists to this very day. thetower.org/article/rememb…

@AviKaner Jews lived in what is now Iraq since the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple by the Babylonians in 586 BCE, 1,000 years before the Arab/Muslim invasion. Before WWII, Baghdad was 33% Jewish, the NYC of its day. THREAD
@AviKaner Across the Arab world Jews were leaders in the arts, cinema, literature, business. That’s all gone. The Jews of Libya, Algeria, Syria, Egypt. Gone.
In 1945 more than 850,000 Jews lived in the Arab world. Today, there are less than 5,000.
@AviKaner A shocking 99.5% of Middle Eastern Jews fled or were expelled. #EthnicCleansing These Jewish refugees received no aid from the UN, no compensation for their stolen property. They were never recognized by human rights organizations, or championed by any celebrities.
