People will travel more this festive period. If someone is involved in a road traffic accident & is bleeding, use these 10 tips to save their life at the scene!
{A thread dedicated to all accident victims!}
RT for awareness!
If a truck, car or motorcycle knocks down a victim & they're bleeding but not dead & you happen to be at the scene pls follow these steps to save their lives;
1. Secure your own safety first. 2. Send a brief SOS call to alert the emergency response.
📌 If victim is conscious (awake) and breathing but only bleeding from a wound;
3. Look for the source of bleeding, remove victim's clothing if necessary.
4. Stop the bleeding with pressure - if no medical supplies available at the scene, cover wound with clean clot, shirt, scarf, etc.
5. For bleeding from deep wounds, keep pressing the clot on the bleeding area with both hands to see if bleeding stops.
6. If the injury is very deep, press the clean cloth into it to pack the wound.
7. If a trauma kit is available & injury is on the leg or hand, pull a tourniquet tight around the person's arm or leg ABOVE THE WOUND!
8. Elevate the injured limb above the rest of the body!
📌 If victim is unconscious but breathing well
9. Lie them on the left side of the body in this position called Recovery Position!
DON'T MOVE THEIR HEAD ABOUT, instead only support it with a soft fabric!
Then try to arrest any bleeding using above steps.
📌 If victim is unconscious & NOT breathing
10. Pls lie them on a flat surface and START CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) immediately!
Give them chest compressions with rescue breaths. See my previous tweet on CPR here;
While you are doing all these, arrangements must have been concluded to move the victim to the nearest medical facility for expert attention or the emergency service must have arrived!
Important notes:
1/
With the second wave of Covid19, travel with your facemask & at least 1 pair of hand gloves 🧤 to use if attending to an accident victim.
And as much as possible, avoid giving mouth-to-mouth rescue breaths if you don't know the victim's status.
2/
Don't give the accident victim anything to eat or drink because they may need an anaesthetic drug (numbing medication) when they reach the hospital.
3/
Check that there's nothing embedded in the wound. If there is, pls don't press down on the object while trying to stop the bleeding. And don't remove it either.
Instead, press firmly on either side of the object and build up padding around it. Then bandage it.
4/
If a body part, such as a finger, toe, or limb has been cut off, don't throw it away.
Nearly put it in a plastic or polythene bag (leather) and bring it along to the hospital.
5/
I've heard of instances where people gather around accident victims, saying pitiful words like "Eh yah!" & "Sorry o!" but failing to actually help the victim until they died of blood loss.
This should not happen when you're present at the accident scene.
6/
Remember, about 4 to 8 minutes of bleeding from a major blood vessel whether externally or internally can lead to death.
So if you can help the victim stop the bleeding before medical care arrives, you might actually save that person's life.
7/
For accident victims who are conscious, breathing well & not bleeding,
• move them to a safe area
• help them keep warm and calm, and
• help them to contact their next of kin.
Not everyone will read this tweet but if you do, spread the knowledge & save a life.
Don't join others who will stand by only to watch accident victims die. You should do something to save their life.
1. Wash your hands 2. Sleep well 3. Reduce stress 4. Exercise daily 5. Stop smoking 6. Limit alcohol 7. Have sex 8. Eat fruits & veggies 9. Be positive & laugh often 10. Take herbal tea & good supplements

Last night I received a text that Dr. Matthias Nnadi, my med school teacher & a consultant neurosurgeon at UCTH, died of acute exacerbation of asthma. Instantly, tears welled up my eyes.
But it's the details of his death that were more shocking... #RIPDrNnadi
His wife sent an ambulance to pick him up in the thick dusty traffic where he was stuck.
It took more than 3 hrs to arrive due to extremely bad roads & traffic around Odukpani area in Cross River.
The ambulance that came for Dr. Nnadi didn't even have oxygen and by the time he arrived the A&E he was already blue, lying lifeless on the stretcher!
