There is so much wrong with this article, it's hard to know where to begin. Lesbians are not extinct, nor are lesbians close to extinction. The L Word has never really been as popular as "gay" & this has long been the case, it's not a new thing.... telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/12/2…

Then in the context of Queer activism, DIY activism & the burgeoning internet culture in the 90's younger adults did not seem to like to be labelled, or boxed into labels. It is still popular for younger adults to describe themselves as fluid, in terms of sexuality, gender...

Earlier, 70s/80s there had been an attack on #butch lesbians in the LGBT community, not from trans women, but from lesbian feminists & lesbian feminist theory, which branded butch #lesbians sadomasochists copying het roles & eroticising sexism & the oppression of femme lesbians..

There was also the so-called 'lesbian sex-wars' of the 80s which was really about Radical Feminist theory & lesbian feminist theory politically critiquing the industries of porn & prostitution, but also reflexively critiquing sexual practices like BDSM in the lesbian community...

There should always be space for such reflexivity, but what this was turned into was a false dichotomy between 'anti-sex' & 'pro-sex' feminists. This played into ancient misogynistic beliefs about lesbians as prudish, ugly, non-sexual, monstrous spinsters etc etc, NOT that this..

...was the fault of lesbian feminist or Radical Feminist activists or theorists; as I said this anti-lesbian propaganda is longstanding, because the most controversial thing a woman can do in patriarchy is be seen to reject men, domestically, politically, socially, sexually...

So this anti-lesbian propaganda has always been something that lesbians are swimming against, against a tide of misrepresentation. Within this is the misogynistic 'ick factor' with women's bodies being seen as sexual objects in culture but also as gross, in need of many products

Waiting lists to even see a 'gender-identity clinic' are up to 2 years long, so can everyone stop suggesting that tomboys up & down the land are being 'transed' within days. Counselling, mental health support etc for young ppl has been straining & collapsing for years due to..

...response that is holistic, informed & reflexive, accepting & critical about a social/medical/psych context which is deeply sex/sexuality/gender conservative in a society that is also deeply sex & gender conservative. Do I think we have a self reflexive, fluid, critical...

...GID service for young ppl, I doubt it v much & this should be talked about. But none of this is the fault of trans women or trans men!

Plus, some trans women are lesbians, some trans women are in lesbian relationships, their genitals are their business & the business of their sexual partner, what business is it of anyone else for goddessakes.

Plus, trans men, trans women, transgender butches, cross-dressing men, NB ppl, queer ppl have ALWAYS BEEN PART OF THE LGBT COMMUNITY, always, historically & currently because this is a community of all those seen as 'deviant' to the sex/sexuality/gender norm.

Plus, there has always been crossover between trans/transgender/GNC always areas of overlap & shared communities between trans men & butches & trans butches, this was well documented in the 90s drfinnmackay.co.uk/blog/whos-afra…

Saying that sex is a construct is perfectly valid. It's not saying sexed genital & reproductive features of the body are constructed; it's not saying the body isn't real; it's to say that what those bodily features mean is constructed by society. The meanings are constructed.

Why should a penis & testicles on a new born baby mean anything about their role or potential, any more than we would call out their weight at birth & go, there it is, that's who they are forever now, let's label them as that & put it on all their paperwork into adult life.

As Radical Feminist theory explained decades ago, sexed features of the body are constructed to mean sex rank. That's what sex means. The meanings can be changed.

Domestic abuse, domestic violence, sexual abuse, rape...are GENDERED crimes, because they are overwhelmingly patterned by sex of victim & perp. Men are vastly more likely to be perps & women victims. If we don't face this we won't face the structural causes & we won't end it.

Men are also victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault & rape. Women can be & are perpetrators. This type of intimate family violence also occurs in same-sex relationships. Children sometimes abuse parents. Carers can & do abuse those they care for.

These facts don't change overall pattern & it's wrong to ignore macro picture. Brutal facts, the body count matters; & it's almost all women, it's nearly all women. This doesn't mean & is never an excuse for ignoring male victims, not seeing female abusers, missing elder abuse.

We have equalities law in this country because we have INEQUALITY. If there wasn't historic & current institutionalised & systemic inequality then we wouldn't need equality law, imperfect though it is.

But many ppl think that we have an equal playing field, & have taken from equalities language & presence that everyone is the same. This leads to ppl seeing equalities law as UNFAIR. Because many ppl face real suffering, but may not be on a list of protected characteristics.

So they begin to feel that their real suffering, enforced poverty, class discrimination, child abuse, pressure of role & societal expectations, violently neglectful education system etc - doesn't matter, or count & aren't taken seriously as say, racism or homophobia.

I don't put my pronouns on my email signature or on bios, I don't put them on name tags at events. I don't care whether ppl call me he, she or they. Sometimes ppl will ask though, as they don't want to offend & I always reply I don't mind, if I'm being introduced then Dr will do.

I realise that most ppl do care, & I respect & understand that. I don't consider myself sex/gender normative because I was born female so society assumes that to = feminine but I've never conformed with that. I don't describe myself as gender non conforming though because I do...

Discussion about #intersectionality at event today. Term coined by Prof Kimberle Crenshaw, legal scholar, Black Feminist in 1989. It's a lens through which to study the workings of power, in groups & between groups. It's a method to improve society for ALL by removing barriers...

So if we want to remove barriers in society we need to stop putting barriers up in people's faces. So, ppl in power should go to the ppl who have least, the ppl who are most marginalised- because the reason those ppl are marginalised is because you've put barriers in their faces.

So, method is those ppl on frontlines of social fractures know where society needs fixing urgently; they are harmed by its sharp edges daily. Study power, who it flows to & who it flows over & tries to wash away. What parts of ones identity open doors, & who faces closed doors.

There is no such thing as "Gender-neutral toilets" because toilets aren't masculine or feminine (tho, ppl are policed going into them depending on if they look masculine or feminine). If there isn't room in ur building/won't prioritise £ then don't put a gender neutral sign on...

...on your existing toilets. If you want good quality accessible toilets then they need to be single occupancy cubicles with sinks, mirror & sanitary provision in each. Doors from top to bottom with working locks. Must be accessed off an open, visible area, like lobby, bar space.

Don't put them down a long narrow corridor or up a dark flight of stairs. Women especially, but others too, may be anxious queuing next to men, passing men in narrow unobserved places. Schools especially need quality, private toilets, single occupancy.
