House members are returning to D.C. now and the stage is set in Congress for an override of Trump's veto of the $740B defense spending bill.
Background on Trump's veto here: courthousenews.com/government-shu… @CourthouseNews
House Leader McCarthy has said that he would not go against Trump to override the veto of NDAA. But other high ranking GOPers in the House, like Liz Cheney, have been calling for it.
With today's vote, if the House successfully overrides, then it must go to the Senate next. There, it would take just one senator to delay the process with a series of procedural maneuvers -- ultimately, however, the votes seem to be there in the Senate to shut Trump's veto down.
Here's some handy information from the Congressional Research Service on veto override procedure: senate.gov/CRSpubs/2b1325…
Meanwhile, ahead of the vote expected to override Trump, the House is convened. On the floor now, Rep. Richard Neal, chair of House Ways & Means, calling for passage of the CASH Act which would increase payments in relief pkg from $600 to $2k
We could have passed this bill four days ago, but my colleagues on the other side went against the president's wishes and blocked it... I sincerely hope House Republicans have had a change of heart and will pass the CASH Act. - Chairman Neal
Republican Rep Kevin Brady of Texas says he knows CASH Act will pass with bipartisan support in the House but he fears it won't do what is needed: "stimulate the economy or get the jobless back to work."
Rep. Brady also argued that payments to Americans will be used by those Americans to pay off their credit card debt and that would be bad because it won't amply stimulate the economy. But he was very much concerned today about whether or not people will shop at Walmart or Amazon.
Rep. Glenn Grothman, R-Wisconsin, is against the CASH Act (upping payments from $600 to $2k) because he thinks Americans will go "buy more electronic junk from China" and won't use the money effectively.
He is against "just printing money."
Rep Neal, appearing somewhat floored by Grothman's argument, says this is about a path to liquidity.
.@RepAlGreen to lawmakers: At some point on the infinite continuum that we call time, we will all have to account for our time... We will all have to ask... What did you do when you had the opportunity to put money into the pockets of those who needed it? Where was your courage?
.@SpeakerPelosi on the floor now, says if Republican Rep. Brady is worried about job creation, she hopes he joins Democrats during the next round of negotiations when they start to hash out funding for state and local and funding for PPE for small biz
Now, we are considering Trump's veto of FY21 NDAA. The House is poised to override his veto. Debate on the veto can be heard for an hour.
Republican Representative Mac Thornberry of Texas on NDAA veto override:
“It’s the exact same bill the House supported days ago. Not a comma has changed. It still prevents the military from having their pay cut. It still creates new tools to deal with a newly aggressive China…"
Rep Adam Smith on overriding Trump veto of NDAA: "This was overwhelmingly bipartisan and the legislative branch made it clear that we support this... It is enormously important to give our troops the support they need to carry out the job that we all are asking them to do."
Rep Smith, D-CT: "There is literally no reason to veto this bill for the reasons the president did... This is really important that we exercise our legislative prerogative."
Smith: This is the most bipartisan committee in Congress, he says of House Armed Services Committee that he chairs. "It's not easy, but we get it done. They put together a bipartisan, bicameral product - let's show the American public the legislative process works."
Debate concludes on NDAA.
Now, the question is, will the House successfully vote to override Trump?
But first, the vote on the stimulus checks. @JackRodgersCNS will have the story.
Now, onto the vote to override Trump's veto of the 2021 defense spending bill. A two-thirds majority is needed to succeed. @CourthouseNews
"Over the objection of the president" are tonight's buzz words.
Looking more and more like Trump will see his veto of the defense spending bill for 2021 overridden in the House.
A reminder - if the House votes to override Trump tonight, it will be the first of his single-term presidency.
#BREAKING: The House has enough votes to override Trump's veto of the defense spending bill. Next to the Senate. This is the 1st time the House has successfully voted to override a Trump veto in his single-term presidency. Final tally to come, but votes are there. @CourthouseNews
In my neck of the woods, we would call this defeat of Trump's veto on the $740B defense spending bill - that included pay raises for military members, funds for PPE and extension for parental leave benefits - a molly whopping.
Trump ends his single-term presidency and likely his very last fight in the House, by losing.
Latest count as of 6:53PM ET:
Still awaiting the final tally but as of 7PM ET, the votes are 320-87 to override Trump's veto on #NDAA:
BREAKING: The House has voted 322 to 87 to override President Donald Trump's veto of the 2021 defense spending bill. Story to come. @CourthouseNews
.@LeaderHoyer statement on tonight's veto override:
And if you wish to know how the votes came down on the veto override tonight, lawmaker by lawmaker: clerk.house.gov/Votes/2020253
Tonight, @RepAlGreen, who also voted to override Trump weighs in. A note - this is only the 112th time a president has been overridden by the House in U.S. history. @CourthouseNews
And on the passage of the CASH Act to increase stimulus payments from $600 to $2,000, @RepAlGreen notes:
.@RepAlGreen, who voted yes on the override, also underlined that had Trump’s veto stood, the consequences would have been multiplied for service members in many ways. The veto, for one example, would have forgone suicide prevention resources for the military. @CourthouseNews
WASHINGTON (CN) — Shutting down outgoing President Donald Trump’s veto of the $740 billion annual defense spending bill, the House of Representatives voted 322-87 Monday to override — leaving it to the Senate to make it law without his signature. courthousenews.com/house-votes-to…

Today: The Senate is back in session @ 3PM ET, not long after we will see a vote for debate to start on the NDAA veto override. A Senate bill bunching $2k checks/Trump's election fraud cmte/Section 230 repeal also expected there PLUS the House's CASH Act (clean $2k checks bill)
Timing on action for the Senate combo legislation or the already passed House bill still TBA. @CourthouseNews
You know the drill by now, I take it - @JackRodgersCNS and I will have the coverage for you!
There are actually some really hard-working good people on Capitol Hill that you would never know about because they are just doing the work and not tweeting about it.
Once, as a baby reporter, I was lost inside the Cap, and a Very Nice Gentleman, maybe 45, saw me struggling, revealed himself as a leg. aide, and then escorted me all the way out, answered all my stupid q's and then showed me a shortcut. He was in the middle of drafting policy.
If someone interrupts me in the middle of drafting a story and I am on a deadline, whatever you are saying to interrupt me better have to do with my story or one MUCH bigger. Otherwise, I stop for basically nothing. That man had the patience of a literal saint.

The outgoing single term president, who lost to Joe Biden in November according to the Electoral College and popular vote, also, technically, lost his fight with the House yesterday when they voted to override his veto.

From the floor, @senatemajldr McConnell says the Senate will set up a final vote for tomorrow (Wednesday) to override Trump's veto of NDAA. @CourthouseNews
The unanimous consent request from Dems to vote on increasing direct payments to $2k failed on the House floor because GOP House Leader Kevin McCarthy needs to consent and he does not. @CourthouseNews
.@DebDingell during the presser with Leader Hoyer lets loose and says of outgoing President Trump that he "doesn’t give a damn about people."
"He sowed more fear. He threw kerosene on a fire." @CourthouseNews
"Republicans blocked it, not Democrats," Dingell says of the push to increase stimulus checks from $600 to $2,000. "I’m merely to here to say on Christmas Eve we will come back on Monday."
