Social tokens are digital assets backed by the reputation of a brand, individual or community.

Enjoy this 2020 Year in Review report as we highlight the projects, tools and professionals driving the sector forward.

What better way to show growth than numbers. In 2020, social tokens featured:

- 22+ key communities
- $80M+ total market cap
- 7000+ unique holders
- 700+ @Collab_Land_ groups

Here’s a birds eye view of a fraction of what unfolded 📈 Image
Social tokens are a response from creators to receive more equitable pay and forge deeper relationships with their community.

@ljin18 put it best in her post ‘The Passion Economy and the Future of Work’

Let’s explore how this played out in web3 🔮

a16z.com/2019/10/08/pas…
Tokenized Time⏱️

Creators offered fixed services for tokens.

@dApp_boi tokenized time through $BOI, used to design the @SAINTFAMEdao Genesis Shirt - $FAME

@pet3pan tokenized time through $MAGIC and @ameensol tokenized RT’s through $PEW 🔫

NFTs 🖼️

Creators accepted tokens as payment for #NFTs.

@connie_digital accepted $HUE on @opensea, teasing how social tokens can be used to spread brand awareness.

@WhaleShark_Pro soon hit the scene with $WHALE and @skeenee_art with $SKULL 🎨

Profit Sharing 💎

Creators explored token micro-raises.

@AlexMasmej raised $20k through $ALEX to move to SF and @kermankohli raised $20k through $KERMAN.

This foreshadowed a way to bootstrap capital using reputation as collateral 🤝

Permissioned Access ✅

Creators gated private communities using tokens.

@karma_dao used @Collab_Land_ to create an exclusive Telegram group focused on networking and deal flow.

Permissioned chats are now used by most social token communities 🔑

Community Rewards ✨

Creators offered new incentives to fans.

@RAC partnered with @ourZORA to launch $RAC

Patreon, Twitch and Bandcamp supporters received an airdrop to unlock perks, exclusive content and redemption bonuses on drops like $TAPE 📼

Now, it’s time for emerging communities to shine.

Some highlights to keep an eye on include:

- $WHALE by @whalesharkpro
- $FWB by @FWBtweets
- $RNG by @galaxyRTK
- $JAMM by @JammSession_

Plus many more to come!
The report also covers the top social token:

- Issuers
- Tools
- Professionals
- Maps
- NFTs
- Stories
- Trends

Far too many to name in this thread!
What many first brushed off as a fad has quickly blossomed into one the most creative, accessible sectors of web3.

Expect more funding, incubation and governance tokens in 2021.

Expect the social layer to see the same degree of growth as #DeFi in 2018.

Special thanks to @carlosecgomes for slaying the design, @thattallguy for the mapping and @jamesyoung, @notscottmoore, @Flynnjamm and @pridesai for their contributions. 🙏

2020 was a game changer for Ethereum.

The vast majority of its success was fueled by #DeFi.

Here's what happened in 5 Tweets 🔽
1) Governance Tokens 🪙

Projects gave complete ownership of billion dollar protocols to their users, often using retroactive airdrops.

Early adopters earned tokens for past usage, and token-based voting now dictates all technical upgrades.

2) Liquidity Mining ⛏️

Power users were the first to earn on-going distribution by providing liquidity.

$COMP sparked the wave, with $BAL coining the term a few weeks later.

So you heard the @graphprotocol is providing accessible on-chain data to over 3400+ subgraphs.

"What Google does for search, The Graph does for blockchains."

Let's explore what this means and how $GRT plays a critical role in this ecosystem 👨‍🚀
Subgraphs are the lifeblood of the network.

Consumers make queries (or data requests) to relay info like price, volume, and liquidity.

They temporarily lived on a hosted service, allowing for free deployment while the decentralized network was being built out.

Enter $GRT 🔽
With $GRT, Indexers run nodes to host subgraphs in exchange for issuance and query fees.

Indexers select subgraphs to index based on curation.

To become an indexer, node operators post a minimum self-bond of 100k tokens.

With #Bitcoin at an all-time high, it's important to not get caught up in the adrenaline.

Some thoughts on how to stay grounded in a bull market 🔽
Token Price ≠ Success

Look for marginal improvements in the way we coordinate, transfer and create value.

While price is often a byproduct of this, the real value is in network effects, not financial freedom.
Challenge your assumptions.

It's easy to feel like a genius when everything is up triple digits on the year.

Seek conviction in your winners and learn how to separate a short-term flip from a long-term staple.

How to freelance in crypto without technical skills.

Five ways to turn web3 contributions into a paid role ⬇️
1) Content

Ever project is always in need of high quality content.

Whether it's an article, video or podcast, find a way to explain how a protocol works and why it matters.

Teams will pay you to produce more of it.

2) Coordination

Show that you can moderate and manage a growing community.

Take notes during calls, prepare agendas and be the most trusted voice.

Information is so ephemeral and great coordinators make sure updates and developments are always heard.

What is #CryptoArt and what gives it value?

Some thoughts on the growing #NFT movement and what you need to know 🔽
1) Provenance 🔐

For the first time in history, we can prove ownership of a digital asset.

This is done through 'tokens' that come with hardcoded metadata and proof of the origin, current owner and primary sale (when applicable).

2) Scarcity 🥇

Each piece has a fixed number of copies. The fewer the editions, the more valuable each becomes.

The most exclusive NFTs are 1/1's, meaning there is only one original (and owner).

This is why curation on @SuperRare is so important 💎
