I'm at the scene in Falconridge where a Calgary police officer was killed during a traffic stop late last night. Arrived as they were towing away his squad car. A single white rose lies on a snowbank in memory of Sgt. Andrew Harnett. #yyc Image
The incident happened just outside a gas station off Falconridge Drive. Can see a mark on a curb where the offender's vehicle appeared to jump the curb. There's also a discarded paramedic's glove on the ground where it happened. ImageImageImage
CPS are holding a press conference in about 15 minutes. We will have it live on @660NEWS and online at 660citynews.com.
Police have released the name of the suspect and the vehicle he was driving.
The press conference is underway. Chief Mark Neufeld says this is an extremely difficult time for the whole service.
Neufeld says he got to know Sgt. Harnett personally, and has been speaking with other colleagues about him. Says he was "an outstanding police officer, an outstanding leader, and an outstanding person."
Neufeld says this is the type of day he has nightmares about.
CPA President John Orr speaking now as well. Says they will hold the suspects responsible for this "cowardly act." Says they lost a brave officer last night.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi speaking too. Can see tears in his eyes as he speaks. Says everyone in the city shares in the deep sense of loss here. His thoughts are with Harnett's family and his colleagues in the CPS.
Now going to questions from the media. Any chance the driver of the vehicle was unaware he caused serious injuries?

"We don't believe that's the case," says Neufeld.
Next question on if Harnett was working alone. Neufeld says due to his position, Harnett was by himself on the call, but other officers were nearby.
Next question on if there's some dashcam footage, CCTV etc. to examine. Neufeld says they are still looking for all the available evidence at the scene.
Question on the second vehicle involved in the incident. Neufeld says that second vehicle may have come into contact with Harnett as well.
Next question on why police named one of the suspects even though he is 17, and is there any sense of a motive?

Neufeld says the latter is part of the investigation. Naming the youth is "unconventional" but necessary here as they are trying to locate the suspect.
Next question on how Harnett's previous work may lead to breaks in this case. Neufeld says he was great at capturing information at a scene, so it sounds like he was able to gather a lot of info before the tragic incident. Helped them ID the suspects.
Next question to Neufeld about how they can pull together and deal with this.

He says this type of adversity will bring people together, there has been a tremendous response already. Neufeld's voice cracking here as he mentions how everyone is stepping up to help.
Any anger on this senseless death?

"I'm pissed off," says Neufeld.
Next question about a large police presence in the NW this morning, is it connected? Neufeld says not to his knowledge.

Any more details on what Harnett gathered before the incident? Neufeld says it varies from video to written info that he took in.
Anything more we can learn about Harnett's personal life in addition to other details we have heard?

Neufeld says he will leave that for now. It's still fresh and his family is still trying to process it. But that said, Neufeld reiterates how amazing he was.
Neufeld even worked a shift with Harnett, says he was a consummate professional and everything you would want from a police officer.
Neufeld says there's no such thing as a routine traffic stop, and this underscores that fact.
Another question here on what was the reason for the stop and if the suspects were known to police.

Neufeld says it was related to a license plate not matching the vehicle. They were known to police as well.
This ends the press conference. Thanks for following along. More details coming in through the day on @660NEWS

I've stayed off Twitter for 90% of my vacation away from work, and that has done leagues for my mental health. Now to return and see what is happening with the UCP's irresponsible travel plans, I'm trying to figure out why I'm not more mad. It must be that I'm exhausted. 1/
I can't even say I'm disappointed. This is totally par for the course. Since 2019, our government has been gaslighting critics, trying to intimidate journalists (including myself), and trying to say they know better than everyone else. 2/
We've also seen this throughout the response to the pandemic. Premier Kenney, in the early days, was admittedly doing the right things. His messaging was strong and it genuinely seemed like he cared for Albertans' well-being in making difficult decisions. 3/

Welcome back folks! This has started again and we will hear a ruling from the justice.
I had to dial in this time over the phone, I think they just cut out the video stream due to all the issues we saw this morning.
Justice started by going through what the restrictions are. Explaining what the applicants were seeking as well here.

Good morning, I am currently in a virtual Calgary courtroom watching today's constitutional challenge against COVID-19 restrictions. There are easily over a hundred people watching as well, and a big lineup outside the courthouse as well. #yyc #ableg
The challenge has been launched by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms. Their release here says they are challenging the "Alberta government cancelling Christmas." jccf.ca/court-to-hear-…
The fun thing about this is there is a live chat feature as well, unlike in a normal court where you have to stay quiet. Here is one interesting comment off the top.

Right now, Premier Jason Kenney is giving an update on opioid deaths in the province. It has officially been the deadliest year on record, with 904 deaths up until the end of October. #ableg
Kenney just said now that he feels the CERB benefit contributed to the crisis and allowed people struggling with addiction to buy more drugs. Cites a single source in Ottawa as proof.
In July, 142 people died from overdoses. This is a record high. Numbers dropped steadily month-by-month since then. Kenney says his heart goes out to the loved ones of those who died.

I am now on COVID-19 duty and awaiting the daily update from @CMOH_Alberta Dr. Deena Hinshaw. Details in this thread. Listen live on @660NEWS or watch the stream on our website. #yyc #yeg #ableg
The latest numbers have just come in, 1,733 new cases on Sunday.
The proceedings have begun. Dr. Hinshaw starts by recognizing Albertans in areas of enhanced measures who have ensured they are following them to the best of their abilities.

On the line waiting for the start of a press conference with CEMA Chief Tom Sampson and CPS Supt. Ryan Ayliffe. They will discuss the local COVID-19 response and likely respond to many questions centring around Saturday's anti-mask protest. Follow this thread for details. #yyc
We are now getting underway after a delay to start things off.
Sampson is first to speak (reminder this is the last day before his retirement, which officially starts in just over an hour). He wants to talk about the shift from educating people about the mask bylaw, to enforcing it.
