Pro-@wikileaks activists gathered this afternoon in front of the British Embassy in Washington DC to protest extradition hearings being held in the case of #JulianAssange.
"Free, free, Julian Assange!" they chanted. "There's only one decision, no extradition!"
"What do we want? Free Assange! When do we want it? Now!"
@LeeCamp led chants outside the British embassy before telling the crowd Julian Assange "set an amazing example of courage" and is dangerous to those in power.
A lot of left activists spent their time criticizing the Democrats on the issue of Julian Assange, especially those framed as progressive.
@AOC was criticized for saying she'd have to "think" about whether or not Assange should be freed.
"We need him free now more than ever."
"There is absolutely no way he can be extradited here and get anything even pretending to be a fair trial," said @MaxBlumenthal/@TheGrayzoneNews.
He says past attempts to spy on Assange's conversations with a lawyer and an alleged assassination plan mean fair trial impossible.
One activist pointed out that the Obama administration prosecuted more whistleblowers than all previous administrations combined, and "Donald Trump broke that fucking record."
Socialist activist Morgan Artyukhina @LavenderNRed asks "where does US overreach stop?" given that the United States is trying to have Assange - who is not American - extradited for allegedly violating United States law while not in the United States.
Activist @Fiorella_im blasted aspects of the left who don't support Assange.
"You can't rebrand socialism as an imperialist pro-regime change brand like @aoc has managed to do."
She says it's a "shame" Libertarians and Repubs in congress stand more for "free speech" than Dems.
The event ended on a light-hearted note with a group photo in front of the British Embassy, where they chanted "fuck the British" in unison.
There was some pause before switching to "free Assange!" instead.
Here is my full HD footage summary of today's protest outside the British Embassy.
As always, all footage available to license.
Whether or not Assange will be extradited may be decided in about 12 hours; a protest either way is planned tomorrow at DOJ.

Earlier today, pro-@wikileaks activists who had been protesting against the prosecution of #JulianAssange held a party outside the Department of Justice including cake and balloons to celebrate a British court's decision not to extradite.
The United States is expected to appeal.
During the party, a DOJ cop came over to ask about the demonstration, but there were no issues and the group had a permit.
The organizers attempted to get the cops to eat some of the cake, but they didn't bite (literally.)
Here is my video from the event. As always, all footage available to license.
I did film some speeches afterwards, which I didn't stream or post. Anyone looking for footage of those feel free to PM.
VIDEO: Activists organized by @SmashTheFashNVA held a protest this evening outside the Alexandria, VA Holiday Inn hotel demanding they not provide rooms for attendees of Wednesday's "Stop the Steal" rally in DC.
Activist tells me hotel has discount code for rally participants.
"They're hosting the Proud Boys, so they're renting rooms to fascists, and we don't like that" said @JonathanKrallVA.
"We think that these businesses should identify these groups and refuse to rent rooms to them because fascism should be taken seriously."
"The day that Biden won, we had hundreds of thousands of people at Black Lives Matter Plaza," said an activist who asked to be ID'ed as "Bug."
"We need those numbers again. We need those people to be out now, fighting against fascism."
Matt Couch, a relatively prominent right-wing figure (although not a member of the Proud Boys), claims that Enrique Tarrio was arrests on arrival in DC.
This is the incident he was reportedly arrested for (but I’d wait for confirmation to be sure of this.)
Tarrio was present when it happened (drinking a cup of coffee) but didn’t personally burn it.
However, he leads the PB’s and took responsibility in a statement on Parler.
THREAD: Yesterday following a pro-Trump/anti-lockdown protest in Salem, OR, riot police fired sting balls at conservatives and Proud Boys who refused to step back while trying to confront counter-protesters.
In the moments before the sting-ball incident, portions of the right-wing crowd including Proud Boys came across a group of counter-protesters they identified as "antifa" and began chanting "Fuck antifa!" before police stepped in between.
Folks on the right got particularly agitated as two of the BLM counter-protesters made their way around the police line, one with a paintball gun and one with a firearm.
"What the fuck is going on?" asked one.
"Remove this man right now!" he ordered cops, who didn't listen.
“A Chinese court handed a four-year jail term on Monday to a citizen-journalist who reported from the central city of Wuhan at the peak of last year's coronavirus outbreak, on grounds of ‘picking quarrels and provoking trouble,’ her lawyer said.” reuters.com/article/us-hea…
“On March 7, when Wuhan’s top Communist Party official said residents should undergo ‘gratitude education’ to thank the government for its anti-epidemic efforts, Ms. Zhang walked through the streets, asking passers-by if they felt grateful.”
“‘But as someone who cares about the truth in this country, we have to say that if we just wallow in our sadness and don’t do something to change this reality, then our emotions are cheap,’ Ms. Zhang said.
