"Nobody gets a seven-year head start, and so that was unbelievable" - hbr.org/amp/2020/12/ho… ... it's not really unbelievable if you consider inertia and looked at the executives of competitors at that time i.e. IBM, Oracle, HP etc. They were all out of their depth.
What is unbelievable is that despite doing this once, despite the play being obvious (i.e. the ILC like model - trying reading AWS book on reaching cloud velocity) that AWS gets to do it all over again with serverless and competitors still react as hopelessly as the past ...
... I don't know what garbage they spoon feed these executives at business schools but it isn't working. Oh, and Lambda launched almost 7 years ago. Ok, MSFT is in there whilst Google has fumbled and gone off down a K8s dead end. The rest of the industry? ROTFLMAO.
That'll be twice now ... I can only assume this pattern is going to just get repeated as we move further up the stack?
X : What can competitors do?
Me : At a minimum start with doctrine. My recommendation however would be to build a time machine and start with doctrine about 13 years ago.

I'll use the new doctrine table, phase I at the bottom ... build up!
X : 13 years?
Me : Well, 15 years would be better. I thought I'd give a couple of years for inertia etc. But really, you should have been doing most of this stuff long ago. This is 2021. This was late in 2011.
X : Don't you think kubernetes will challenge AWS?
Me : Ignoring that EKS is probably the most widely used kubernetes service and we haven't even started with EKS anywhere ... my answer to the question would be ... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ouch my sides have split. Please no more.
X : Do you think Amazon should be split up?
Me : It depends upon your purpose? If you intend to accelerate China's dominance on the world stage whilst allowing some execs to keep rent extracting until retirement without fear of being commoditised then by all means.
X : Well, how do we compete with AWS?
Me : I've already answered. Focus on doctrine (see table).
X : What about strategy?
Me : Forget it. Focus on doctrine first ... start with phase I, climb up the table. Toughen up a bit. Strategy comes much later.
X : Culture?
Me : Doctrine.
X : What if we change our organisation model?
Me : Doctrine.
X : But you talk about Pioneer - Settler - Town Planner.
Me : Sure ... but after you've sorted doctrine. Or hire someone like @jamesaduncan who has the experience to play with the order of stuff.
X : I thought you were against hiring management consultants?
Me : There are exceptions. Anyway, I was more thinking you need a new CEO. Actually, that's a good rule of thumb. If the consultant you're hiring couldn't do a better job than your CEO then ... don't hire them.
X : But strategy is important.
Me : Of course. However, until you're good at all the stuff in the green box ... don't waste time with strategy and ideas of exploiting the landscape or organisation models like PST. The only strategy you need is to "get yourself shipshape".

How lockdown should work
- threadreaderapp.com/thread/1345210…
X : Do we need lockdown if we have a vaccine?
Me : Oh dear. Were to start? Lockdown buys you time to implement test, test, test and isolate. That's what we haven't done in over 7 months and still need to do -
X : Test, test, test?
Me : Test at home, test in transit, test at destination. Isolate any variation. The usual precautions etc - PPE, no excuses, no "voluntary certification" for not wearing masks, no mask under nose, troops on the street to enforce etc. Zero tolerance.

X : Thoughts on 2021?
Me : Same as 2020, 2019, 2018 ...
[Society] Have that We vs Me discussion.
[Economy] Start learning from China.
[Business] Focus on doctrine (see image).
[Tech] Go serverless.
X : Me vs We, China, Doctrine and Serverless is all we can expect to hear from you in 2021?
Me : Yep.
X : Mapping?
Me : Part of doctrine - "understand what is being considered"
X : Doesn't this get boring?
Me : You think? A necessary evil it seems.
X : Business Strategy?
Me : For 99.9999% of companies out there, forget ... business strategy, culture, organisational design ... just concentrate on having a purpose and a primitive understanding of your landscape through the most basic of doctrine (focus on user needs etc)

X : Brexit?
Me : Eh?
X : The deal?
Me : Oh, you mean the theatre is over? The "on the edge of a cliff, roll up, roll up, Boris to the rescue with a 1,200+ page document" ... the theatre did seem rather pointless but it kept the Daily Fail readers occupied with lots of frothing.
X : So, what do you think of it?
Me : I haven't read it yet. Still, the first few months were always going to be "interesting".
X : How so?
Me : We get to find out which companies don't give a whoot about customers and will use this to make a quick profit ...
.... my money, if I was going to bet, would have to be on ... hmmm, tough, so many choices ... well, it's got to be telcos. I'd reckon they will reintroduce roaming charges and SMS fees (despite there being no good reason) in order to profit at customers expense ...

This is not a question of whether we should leave or not but one of focus. On this matter @NicolaSturgeon is spot on. It is in the interest of all (including the EU) if UK focuses on a policy of eradication ->
X : New strain is no more deadly.
Me : Not the point. The new strain spreads more quickly. The existing strain was deadly enough with UK having 2M cases and close to 70K deaths without overloading our healthcare system. The extra pressure this new strain will cause is not good.
Hence it is so important to follow Government advice, to socially distance, to wear masks, to keep calm, to support others and to act as one nation.

Really disappointed to hear about people flocking to train stations to escape tier 4 areas.

I had a fascinating conversation today examining poverty, collective behaviour and teenage pregnancy through the lens of maps. There is some wonderful work happening in Columbia. Awe inspiring.
But something I've noticed of late is a real change in intent with a new crop of companies ... a real focus on ethics, principles and doing collective good rather than just simply accruing wealth.
There is also a sense of an awakening, maybe people are finally realising that the idea that we can't afford basic services like a decent healthcare, decent education, decent social services doesn't really past muster when there are such symbols of profligate wealth.
