I had to play Yu-Gi-Oh Dungeondice Monsters to try and jog my memory of this GBA game I played a lot that *did* involve dungeons but *may* have involved dice and *possibly* monsters but it didn't really help and I had to go down the list of all Japanese releases
all I remembered was the characters were kind of egg-shaped
anyway it was Monster Gate, also by Konami, a Mystery Dungeonlike based on a medal game
not to be confused with
nor this (but it is a sequel)
nor this
(Monster Gate uses cards btw, not dice)
OK since this already grew too much and all I really wanted was to play Monster Gate, I should probably say I had no clue @DougDinsdale worked on Dungeon Dice, but it's cool that a random screenshot can lead to insight:
Ever see something neat that barely anyone talks about? You know people have it, so you wonder why it hasn't been available, but don't want to shout into the void? And you realize you gotta do it yourself?
If you're wondering about II: Konami's Shanghai branch ported it in 2003 with hi-res sprites. Chinese only. It's not really on my radar since it's findable, but scans of the official packaging would be nice (L: someone's copy with the Chinese ver. of 1, which I haven't found)
So yeah, the release of My Summer Vacation/ぼくのなつやすみ turns 20 this week, unbelievably. Fair to say it's still my favorite video game. It even helped get me started in game journalism, among other things. If you know me, you know the story: scroll.vg/issues/10
I didn't even know about Boku no Natsuyasumi until a few months later, in a sidebar piece in this issue of the Tokyopop magazine. Arguably the only good thing Tokyopop ever did (look at least Stu didn't write the article)
