January 5, 2021. 11:30 AM - The Judicial panel of Inquiry resumes its sitting. Arrived a tad bit late due the timing of my segment on the morning show. Don’t think I’ve missed much, no petitioner has been called forward. #ENDSARS
Here are the petitioners set to testify today. By my count today makes for the 23rd sitting for the panel but who’s counting. #ENDSARS
The first witness in the case of Adebayo Abayomi is called forward, his name is Ibrahim Yusuf, he is the lead witness for Police legal counsel Cyril Ejiofor. Yusuf is sworn in and proceeds to give his testimony. #ENDSARS
“A team of policemen attached to Mushin Division were to arrest a certain Kayode Yusuf, he resisted and SGT.Chibueze shot in the air and hit Kudirat Adebayo. We later went to recover the body, all policemen were arrested except the shooter, he ran when we arrived at the station”
Their rifles were seized and a ballistics examination performed. The other police officers have been exonerated but Chibueze has been declared wanted and is still on the run till today.. #ENDSARS
Cross examination is taken over by legal counsel for petitioner, Uyime Eyo (haven’t seen his face in these parts must be new to JPI) #ENDSARS
E: What if I say the police isn’t doing their best to catch the policeman that killed Kudirat?
Y: There is a warrant for his arrest, his accounts have been frozen, if we find him he will be brought in. #ENDSARS
Legal counsel for the panel Jonathan Ogunsanya also has his own questions for the witness-
O: Are you saying no compensation has been given to this family?
Y: I’m afraid I’m not in the best position to answer that question. #ENDSARS
O: Was this case brought to the attention of the Inspector general of police?
Y: Yes, he’s aware.
After deliberating Justice Okuwobi for a written address of no more that 5 pages to besent in within the next 7 days and the case is adjourned to Jan. 26, 2021 #ENDSARS
The next petition for Adeyemo Rotimi, Ejiofor asks for an adjournment as their witness is absent. Opposing counsel reminds counsel that their case has been adjourned twice already,Justice Okuwobi adjourns to Jan 26, 2021 stating it be the last adjournment in favor of the police
The next petition in the case of Felix Lucky, where another witness Chigozie is called forward. He aims to have been very good friends with the deceased as they were both vigilantes at Jakande estate, Lagos.
The deceased had gotten into an altercation with a certain Sergeant John, Chigozie narrates the brutal killing of his friend. #ENDSARS
E: I want you to be specific, at what point did you learn Lucky was killed ?
C: Btw 8/9
E: Would you be surprised to know that your friend Lucky led boys to Ilasan police station?
C: I’m not aware of that #ENDSARS
E: Would it surprise you know that when Lucky approached the station the vigilante group me some opc members were present? Do you know that Lucky was naked with charms on his head he was shot by an OPC member?
E: No o #ENDSARS
Did you know cultist members wanted Lucky’s head and he was infact by saved by police officers. #ENDSARS
Police counsel, Ejiofor rests his cross and opposing counsel chooses not to re-examine. Further hearing in this case is also adjourned to Jan 26, 2021. #ENDSARS
3:01 PM - Panel is back after a short recess, earlier today legal counsel for the Lekki Concession Company asked that the panel revisit their application to start operations. Technicalities spotted by petitioners’ counsel Ogunlana are backed up Police counsel Ejiofor #ENDSARS
Ogunlana asks that the status quo be preserved. He also states that more time is needed to conduct an Independent Forensics Examination costing approx. N25M which they can’t afford.
LCC Legal Counsel: If it were a private property would guy shut it down indefinitely? #ENDSARS
“We cannot sacrifice justice on the altar of speed, it would be foolhardy to say that the panel needs not conduct forensic evidence is not needed in this inquiry. A huge amount has been paid and the forensic team says it will take 21 days” - Justice Okuwobi #ENDSARS
The Lekki investigation as if affects the LCC is adjourned to January 29th for a further consideration of the application to reopen to Lekki Toll Gate Plaza.
There’s a petition witness who isn’t on the list. His name is Adebowale Ojekaiye (a rep from Reddington hospital) based on a summons issued by a petitioner to present medical records of patients checked in between 20th - 22nd of Oct 2020. #ENDSARS
Two consultants who work at reddington and also treated some of these patients are present. Unfortunately the can’t take the witness stand, the hospital documents are submitted as exhibits and this case is adjourned to Jan 30, 2021. #ENDSARS
The next petitioner, Marc Chidebere Nwadi is called forward. Ejiofor still can’t present the policeman “Friday” who assaulted Marc way back in 1999. Opposing counsel insists it’s the police job to investigate as produce the witness #ENDSARS
His case is adjourned to Jan 26, 2021 where the final address would be given. #ENDSARS
The next and final petitioner, Blessing Omorogie is called forward. However, petitioners’ counsel is not prepared for a cross examination as they haven’t had enough time to study the case. In that light, the petition is adjourned to Jan 26, 2021 #ENDSARS
