① of ⑧ On my Facebook page, under my video about the case for #Breturn, ardent #Brexiter Bob Pattenden commented: ‘You can’t accept a Democratic vote you lost get over it and move on, but you always have the democratic choice to move to a EU country but my guess is you won’t’
② of ⑧ I replied: My Facebook page only supports strictly democratic means to achieve change. In a #democracy, if you lose, you don't have to give up. You can hope and campaign to win next time. That's precisely what #Brexiters did after they lost.
③ of ⑧ So, please, don't bring double standards to my Facebook page. If #Eurosceptics could campaign for a new vote after they lost, then so can #Remainers/ #Rejoiners too. If that was not the case, we would no longer have a democracy.
④ of ⑧ And since when did democracy require people to leave the country, Bob, because they don't agree with your point of view?
⑤ of ⑧ The next general election is currently scheduled for 2 May 2024. Then, the electorate may vote for a different version of #Brexit, or to dump Brexit altogether. Or they might do that at the election after that, or the election after that.
⑥ of ⑧ Remember, #Eurosceptics got a new vote on leaving the #EuropeanCommunity just 8 years after the first referendum in 1975. And guess what? The next general election will be exactly 8 years since the 2016 referendum. Sounds about right to me.
⑦ of ⑧ Postscript: Clearly, there’s no point engaging with people like Bob. But many people will see that it's Bob who is against #democracy. Because after all, #Brexiters would never have got a second referendum if they hadn't campaigned against the first one.
