2/ Many politicians, especially those on the Right, pretend they are strictly adhering to the U.S. #Constitution when they often are just making the founding document mean whatever they want – but perhaps nowhere is that as dangerous as with their make-believe #SecondAmendment.
3/ In the wake of a Sunday mass shooting in #LasVegas—where one individual firing from a high-rise hotel murdered 58 people and wounded more than 500 at a country music festival ---
Fascism is a religion. The 20th century will be known in history as the century of fascism.
— Benito Mussolini
I’d like to draw some comparisons and contrasts between our present situation and that of fascist Italy between 1922 and 1945.
I choose fascist Italy rather than Nazi Germany because it has always seemed to me a better comparison. Nazi Germany was the extreme militarist, racist and totalitarian variant of Italian fascism, which was more adaptable, pragmatic, rooted in reality and also more incompetent
...ineffectual and half-hearted, all of which seem true to our condition today. Italy was the original form, while Germany was an offshoot.
All the times the govt's own EU referendum pamphlet, delivered to every house, said that voting Leave meant "less access", "losing full access" & "uncertainty and risk" about the Single Market. But a majority voted Leave anyway. #democracy@LeaveMnsLeave@DeborahMeaden
Here's the Remain campaign's widely distributed 'Europe & You' leaflet, stating that our votes "will decide your family's future" & "at risk" was being "free to trade with all EU countries with no barriers". A majority voted Leave anyway. #democracy@Change_Britain@DeborahMeaden
Here's Will Straw, director of the Remain campaign, highlighting that Leave campaigners had "conceded" that outside the EU the UK would lose access to the Single Market. "We must be absolutely clear about what this means", he said. A majority voted Leave anyway #democracy@montie
@ShawnTheAtheist Disagree because of the dominance of #socialmedia: The platforms that banned #InfoWars reach over 2 billion people & as such are not just "private companies". What we need fast is a Digital Bill of Rights to ensure a #FreeInternet & a free exchange of ideas on all platforms.
It’s interesting, this time 4 years ago several debates had already taken place. I also learned that many of the debates were specifically held for specific Candidates- a way to use the airwaves to promote if you will.
TWEET THREAD (1/8) 📢 OUR NEW RESEARCH on voter purges — when election officials remove names from voter registration lists — has alarming findings, with major implications for the integrity of our #democracy: bit.ly/2O3bCAw
(2/8) Almost 4 million more names were purged between 2014 and 2016 than between 2006 and 2008 — 33% growth, much higher than the growth in eligible voters and in the larger population.
(3/8) Purge rates have increased more in states that, due to their history of #racialdiscrimination, were previously subject to federal "preclearance," a practice that ended with the 2013 #SCOTUS decision Shelby County v. Holder.
1. Finland is not a neutral country. We chose our side when we joined European Union in 1995. Finland chose to be on the side of #humanrights, #democracy, #ruleoflaw and multilateral world order. Finnish foreign policy is based on promoting and defending these values.
2. Women's rights are human rights. We believe the world would be a better place for everyone if #WomensRights and girls' rights would be recognised and respected all around the world.
To save our democracy, Democrats need to win big. They not only have to beat Donald Trump in 2020, but also have to achieve majorities in the House and Senate that are big and stable enough to survive the 2022 midterms.
Doing that will require winning back states and districts that they lost in 2014 and 2016, taking others that have long been in GOP hands, and governing in a way that keeps those states and districts from turning red again.
Huge victory for a technical community that has spent decade explaining how the architecture & ethos of the internet are under attack.
2. "But like Sir Tim, many people have recently become more critical of it (...) At the heart of their disenchantment, this special report will argue, is that the internet has become much more “centralised” than it was even ten years ago." economist.com/special-report…
There is no perfect concept in this WORLD. How many human beings have been killed in the name of #DEMOCRACY which is considered to be the most valuable in the modern age? DEMOCRATS used the napalm bombs to mass murder innocent civilians. #民主主義☞#RealHolocaust#WW2
Precise figures are not available, but the firebombing campaign against Japan, directed by C. LeMay between March 1945 and the Japanese surrender in August 1945, may have killed more than 500000 Japanese civilians and left five million homeless. #WW2#CurpetBombing of #japan
