More from ☀️Punchbowl AM: Dems inching toward impeachment
House Ds will hold a noon call to discuss whether they can get rid of Trump. @SpeakerPelosi called on Cabinet to force him out of office through the 25th amendment. She said she will move to impeach him if they dont
@SpeakerPelosi Pelosi’s play here is to make it clear to Trump that his time is up -- even before Jan. 20. The 25th amendment is a long shot, so Democrats are hoping that he steps down. If not, the House will impeach him.
@SpeakerPelosi Make no mistake: this is not an idle threat. Pelosi is angry, and her caucus is furious. Her leadership team recognizes that and told us after a call Thursday that her anger was palpable.
Punchbowl behind the scenes: @realDonaldTrump and @GOPLeader got into a screaming match Wed as an enraged mob of Trump supporters attacked the Capitol, according to a source familiar with the episode.
@realDonaldTrump@GOPLeader McCarthy, one of the president's closest allies in Congress, demanded that Trump release a statement denouncing the mob. Initially, Trump would not agree to do it.
Shows the split btwn GOP leaders and Trump
@realDonaldTrump@GOPLeader House Rs are stuck in a trap. The majority of members areloyal to Trump, which leads the ldrshp to stick by the president. But it’s a Catch-22: Many people in the conference say that the only reason the majority is loyal is because @GOPLeader/@SteveScalise refuse to split w him
With an attack on the U.S. Capitol. With a woman shot dead by a police officer and three others losing their lives in “medical emergencies.”
With America’s capital city locked down in a curfew. With heavily armed FBI agents escorting lawmakers to their chamber. With President Donald Trump’s allies abandoning him. @LindseyGrahamSC said, “Enough is enough.
@LindseyGrahamSC This is the nightmarish twilight of Donald Trump’s presidency. It’s ugly. It’s dangerous. And it has left even his closest allies shocked by his behavior and wondering whether there’s any future for Trump in American public life.
Punchbowl PM: Hello, from the U.S. Capitol. At the moment of this writing, we are safe. But make no mistake: we are under siege here, and so is America.
A mob -- not protestors but an angry mob -- breached the United States Capitol after President Donald Trump urged them to march from the White House down Pennsylvania Avenue as Congress was beginning the process of certifying Joe Biden’s victory.
They pushed onto the guarded complex, breached barricades, pushed past police and later smashed windows to gain entrance to the heavily fortified Capitol.
Man, what a time to start @PunchbowlNews — which we promise every day will be about power, people and politics w a BIG focus on the politics of governing.
A few highlights from Punchbowl AM this morning…. (bit.ly/3hAJJiy)
@PunchbowlNews Loeffler and Perdue bearhugged Trump, and it looks like they both got beat. Why are Republicans acting as if ‘Trump 2024’ is a sure thing if both of his candidates got smacked around in the South and he just lost the presidency?
@PunchbowlNews BTW: Today is the first anniversary of Loeffler becoming a senator. She spent tens of millions of dollars for one year in the Senate. For a finance professional, that was a horrible investment.
THAT’S IT? President @realDonaldTrump made all this noise about the Covid relief and government funding bill only to sign it and get nothing in return?
TRUMP got taken to the cleaners.
WHAT A BIZARRE, embarrassing episode for the president. He opposed a bill his administration negotiated. He had no discernible strategy and no hand to play — and it showed. He folded, and got nothing besides a few days of attention and chaos.
ZIP. ZERO. ZILCH. If he was going to give up this easy, he should’ve just kept quiet and signed the bill. It would’ve been less embarrassing.
