I've been recording what happened on Jan. 6th, the insurrection or sedition or coup or riot or whatever you call it, on other threads, but the more I see, the more I realize it is its own monster, and must be looked at separately.

This began not on Jan. 6th, nor on Nov. 3rd or 7th, nor even the day of that fateful escalator descent. Trump has had a history of reveling in violence for decades, the most infamous case for a long time being his bile against the Central Park 5.
Despite being exonerated of the crimes they were convicted of and spent more than a decade each in prison for, Donald Trump has to this day refused to apologize for demanding their deaths, and long after continued to do so.

On the campaign trail, he reveled in violence, from praising his supporters for punching protesters to asking police to rough people up.

Trump also claims to want to end "Endless Wars", but calls for bombing Iran or North Korea and continues to sell massive numbers of weapons to Saudi Arabia despite a bipartisan protest to this.

Most of all, as you can see often in the Trump terrorism thread about, Trump embraces a style of Stochastic Terrorism, where he wishes for violence and brutality and hopes somebody, somehow, will enact that, without knowing precisely how it will occur.
This has most often taken the form during his failed term as members of the QAnon conspiracy or right-wing militias acting out his "will", as covered again in the thread above and this QAnon thread:
So we've established that Trump has a long history of stirring up violence, without going into great detail.

But the Wednesday Coup was unique even for Trump. Having lost re-election and exhausted countless legal avenues with laughable efforts, Biden was about to be confirmed.
So Donald J. Trump did what a bully always does when cornered and desperate; he lashed out.

In Trump's case, he's consistently too much of a coward to do it himself, so he whipped up a who's who of his most ardent, fanatical followers to march on the capitol and fight.
And this is no allegory or hint: Trump used the word "fight" over and over, while the crowd actually chanted "Fight For Trump." And a slate of others threw their weight behind his incitement.
Though the degree of this caught many of us by surprise, apparently some had expected it... and Trump took steps to hamstring them, packing the Pentagon and ensuring the Capitol Police were alone, outnumbered, and under-equipped. apnews.com/article/capito…
Some early reports said the Capitol Police turned down offers of aid, but later ones said that their requests for aid were turned down. These are clearly contradictory, and the truth is hazy. washingtonpost.com/politics/sund-…
We do know, though, that Trump's packing of the Pentagon now appears to have had this end goal in mind.

Ammunition and riot gear were severely limited, along with keeping the National Guard to directing traffic and not allowing them to confront or interact with Trump's rioters.

So Trump put police and soldiers in harm's way for his coup.

While fighting was brutal on the west side, on the east side it seems like some police just let the terrorists in, and even supported and guided them. Thus, while one officer is dead and many injured, 10-15 others are under investigation.
There were many among the Capitol Police who acted heroically, though, including Officer Eugene Goodman, who lead protesters away from the open Senate Chamber at his own great risk:
