Starting from today, Ukrainian business are obliged to provide services in Ukrainian in a case when a customer requests to get a such one. Sounds very logical, huh? Still, there are a lot of myths and anti-Ukrainian propaganda around this law. Let me try to explain (THREAD)
2/x Indeed, most of Ukrainians understand at least two languages: Ukrainian and Russian. Many of Ukrainians speak the third language: Tatar, Bulgarian, Greek, Polish, Hungarian etc. But in almost ever case when the discussion turns to the topic of language, one mentions Russian
3/x The speed of Russian language has at least 300 years old history. It was a history of prohibition of Ukrainian language (with short interruptions) and forced russification of Ukraine. Therefore, when one says, "Ukraine has always been bilingual", it is just not true.
4/x But let's come back to nowadays. The law requires the business to address the customer in Ukrainian, if the customer requests to get a service in Ukrainian. In a case a customer prefers another language, the business may provide such one (in Russian, English etc.) if possible
5/x The rule would not be necessary in any country worldwide. In Germany I expect a bartender, medic or a cashier to talk to me German as long as I address them in German. In Russia this would be Russian. So why does Ukraine need to have this law? Is it "mocking" of Ru-speakers?
6/x Of course not. The problem is, Ukraine remans one of few (if not the only) country worldwide where Ukrainian-speakers are clearly discriminated and threatened because of their language. Any person who speaks Ukrainian can tell stories of companies which answer you in Russian.
7/x Sometimes this is just annoying - like when you take a taxi. Sometimes it is weird, when you call a bank hotline, select "UA hotline" - but still land to a person who answers only Russian. Sometimes dangerous, as one gets a medical advice in Russian, and does not understand.
8/x In way to often cases, using Ukrainian can be life-threatening and lead to physical attacks. In October 2020, a women was attacked harassed and thrown out of a bus in Sloviansk, because she spoke Ukrainian. vchasnoua.com/donbass/67463-…
9/x In January 2020, a cashier in Odesa supermarket, has harassed, attacked and threatened a customer because he spoke Ukrainian. "Go home and speak Ukrainian there. Here we speak Russian", she shouted. wz.lviv.ua/news/404627-v-…
10/x In December 2019, two teenagers have beaten a man to death because he was speaking Ukrainian while walking in a street. unian.ua/society/107902…
11/x The hate to Ukrainian language is broadly-spread. One of the leading UA TV Channels 1+1 (Kolomiski-owned, most important tool to promote Russian-speaking candidate Zelensky) stated, they make only comedies in Ukrainian "because it's funny", but "serious movies in Russian"
12/x In many shops one finds products imported via Russia with all the labels in RU, what is not only illegal, but can be dangerous especially if it is about cosmetic products, chemicals etc. Every time one raises this question one gets an answer "everyone understands Russian".
13/x So effectively the right to use Ukrainian as a daily language is quite limited in Ukraine, and can even lead to death, while Russian is aggressively promoted by those who try to force everyone to use it at least passively.
14/x I need to stress once again: there is no law that forbids to provide services in Russian, English, Tatar or French. There is only a law that businesses must have an option of Ukrainian. Currently many businesses just ignore this option. It is a tradition of discrimination.
15/15 And of course, it is not a violation of rights of shopkeepers etc. As a shopkeeper one is obliged to provided certain quality standards. It starts from hygiene and ends in fair advertising. No one is forced to be a shopkeeper. But if you are one, you need to respect rules.
THE END

Interesting, that Navalnys quote the famous cult final saying from the most chauvinist and imperialist Russian movie “Brat 2”, the movie Putin absolutely loves to quote as well, as this movie calls to kill U.S. Americans and Ukrainians and proclaims Russians a superior nation.
The moment from the film:
And here is another moment, one Putin loves to quote. The protagonist robes the "morally spoiled" American business person who is involved in sex trafficking and porno production with minors from Russia (hallo, QAnon!) :

(1/x) Good news about local elections in Ukraine:
1) Elections were free and democratic;
2) Democr. pro-European parties "Eur.Solidarity", "Holos" and "Syla Lyudei" are strong in many regions;
3) Syla Lyudei is a great example of a grassroot democratic party, free from oligarchs
(2/x) 4) Several important cities have secured strong pro-European pro-reform governance: first of all Lviv and Vinnytsya;
5) In Kyiv, Klychko will be re-elected. He is (as for me) a bad mayor (infrastructure, urbanist policy), but he is clearly not a pro-Russian guy or a radical
(3/x) 6) New "project parties" founded by oligarchs have suffered a total defeat. "Za Maibutne" by Kolomoisky has failed everywhere. This is a great sign;
7) The slogan "I am from the president's party, I have support of the president, therefore vote for me" does not work at all;

THREAD 1/x It is a very dangerous situation in Ukraine. 12 days before local elections President Zelensky publishes his video statement and says he pursues "a real democracy", so he will "ask people 5 simple questions" amid local elections. The questions will be announced later.
2/x Zelensky calls this initiative "a poll", not "a referendum" - obviously because there is no law on referendum in Ukraine in edition which Zelensky would be happy to see. This draft law did not pass the parliament. "A poll" also can to be organized just a few days in advance.
3/x Announcing "a poll" also allows Zelensky to interpret answers in any way he needs. "A poll" does not underly the laws and does not need to be controlled by the Election Commission.

THREAD 1/x Zelensky's party "Servant of the People" will "for sure unite" with the Medvedchuk's pro-Russian party OPZZh "after the local elections", says Zelensky's top politician, a parliament deputy Kachura, who is a deputy head of UA mission to PACE. He sees no problem in this
2/x Kachura says, a union with Putin's relative and an ex-KGB lawyer Medvedchuk is "inevitable", and is already under consideration of the party's leadership. For him, it would be ok. At the same time, he says he would leave Zelensky's party, if it would unite with Poroshenko (!)
3/x A de-facto coalition of Zelensky's party and Medvedchuk's one already exists in the national parliament. It was Medvedchuk's party which voted for the most important Zelensky's law proposals in order to guarantee expansion of Zelensky's power (like the general attorney case).

Ukrainians in Russian empire and in the Soviet Union were blacks in the racist America. They were claimed to be "dirty", "stupid", their language was mocked, their national cloth and accent was used as a "funny" thing in comedies (aka "blackface"). Their carrier had clear limits.
In the Soviet army, Ukrainian recruits were forbidden to talk Ukrainian to each other - even on the territory of Ukraine. A military carrier was mostly limited up to warrant-officer. Ukr. were "praised" to be "good household holder", that is why so many Ukr. served at warehouses.
If you want to imagine a portrait of a "good" Ukrainian in Soviet propaganda, think of Mammy from the "Gone with the wind" - a loyal servant, very ground-stable and knowing his/her place. A "bad Ukrainian" instead was pictured as rebellious, dreaming of independency (unheard!)

I have another steps to end a "conflict in and around Ukraine":
1) Russia takes its troops and mercenaries from Donbas;
2) Russia gives Crimea back to Ukraine;
3) Russia takes its citizens it has illegally resettled to Crimea since 2014;

(continued)
4) Russia pays Ukraine compensation for all damages done to Ukrainian infrastructure;
5) Russia pays Ukraine compensation for de-mining activities;
6) Russia pays compensation to Ukrainian victims of Russian aggression or to their heirs;

(continued)
7) Russia delivers to international court its political and military personnel responsible for its war against Ukraine;
8) Russia clearly cancels all sabotage programs of destabilizing Ukraine;
9) Russia returns to Ukraine all factories it has moved to Russia in 2014
