Joe Biden said his Cabinet would be "the most diverse in history," so we analyzed data on seven dimensions of diversity.

The results suggest Biden and his team have mostly succeeded, but in some areas more than others.

Thread. 👇 businessinsider.com/joe-biden-cabi…
👉 While Biden's Cabinet and White House staff have diversity in gender and racial makeup, our analysis showed, there is an overrepresentation of people from the East Coast, those with Ivy League degrees, and lawyers. businessinsider.com/joe-biden-cabi…
👉 Researchers suggest this is typical in government but not necessarily the most effective for optimal decision-making. businessinsider.com/joe-biden-cabi…
💡 "Our research indicates inclusive leadership that cultivates cognitive as well as demographic diversity leads to significant performance gains," Jitinder Kohli, a managing director at @Deloitte, told Insider.

💡 Methodology

The metrics making up our analysis are race/ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, regional origin, and education.

This analysis is based on nominees and appointees as of December 15, and so it will be updated regularly.

👉 Racial/ethnic diversity

Based on our analysis of the 48 people who had been named as of December 15, Biden's Cabinet and White House staff are made up of at least 50% people of color.

Of the people of color, many represent the first person of their race to lead specific departments, or the first person of their race to serve in the Cabinet, such as Deb Haaland. businessinsider.com/deb-haaland-jo…
👉 Gender diversity

Biden is set to break records in female representation. Of the 19 members in the Cabinet who were nominated at the time of our analysis, 10 were women.

Janet Yellen will be the first woman to lead the Treasury.

👉 Regional diversity

Insider's analysis showed a large number of people from the Northeast.

This isn't all that surprising given that Biden is from Pennsylvania, according to the co-founder of @InclusiveUS, @MarkHanis:

👉 Ivy League vs. other colleges

The Biden-Harris ticket will be the first winning ticket without an Ivy League degree between the president and the vice president since 1976.

About half the people in our analysis had Ivy League degrees.

An overrepresentation of Ivy League degrees is problematic for a number of reasons, says @MarkHanis.

"There's biases of both self-selection and how those institutions admit people," Hanis said, adding:

The Senate could bar Donald Trump from ever serving again as president.

Here’s how. 👇

businessinsider.com/senate-congres…
The Constitution allows the Senate to ban an official convicted in an impeachment trial from ever holding federal office again. If this rare procedure is invoked, it could be the end of Trump’s political career.

businessinsider.com/senate-congres…
Two key Constitutional clauses come into play here: Article II, Section 4 and Article I, Section 3.

Through two separate Senate votes, Congress can prevent any civil officer who has been impeached and convicted of ever holding federal office again.

The coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately affected communities of color. But so far, white people have gotten most of the #COVID19 shots.

Insider analyzed vaccination data across six states. Here’s what we found.

businessinsider.com/covid-shots-gi… Image
Insider looked at data from states with the largest proportions of Black residents. Six states publish their data by race. Across these states, vaccinations for Black people and other minorities lagged behind vaccinations for white people.

This vaccine shortfall is striking because research shows that Black Americans and Black healthcare workers have made up a disproportionate number of coronavirus cases and deaths.

Even on the day when Joe Biden was officially certified by the Electoral College as the US president-elect, most of the Republican apparatus did not publicly change its tune.
businessinsider.com/these-gop-reps…
President-elect Joe Biden officially earned over 270 Electoral College votes on Monday, bringing an end to nearly six weeks of efforts by President Trump to subvert and invalidate election results.
However, Trump has not yet conceded the 2020 election. His campaign, Republican allies, and Trump himself have mounted at least 40 legal challenges since Election Day. They've won zero.

A bipartisan group of senators have said that the final details of their $908 billion #COVID19 stimulus plan could be finalized early this week. A thread 👇
businessinsider.com/covid-stimulus…
The bill contains $288 billion for a small-business loan program, $180 billion to boost unemployment insurance, and $16 billion to distribute the coronavirus vaccine and help public-health workers track people who are infected.
businessinsider.com/stimulus-908-b…
However the stimulus plan doesn't include new $1,200 checks for Americans. Excluding the checks from the package was the only way to reach an agreement with Republicans, according to Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin.
