Got up.
Had coffee.

Shopping
Doctor's appointment no. 2
Took cardboard boxes to recycling bin
Collected old family diaries & photo albums from my stepdad
Took them home, looked at cover
"My Poland Campaign 1939"
😳
Trying to breathe
2/
Just going through the material. Most of it is from my stepdad's dad who joined the German army in 1936 and went on the Poland, Belgium, France & Russia campaigns. Where he was killed.
There's a beautiful letter to his 2-yr-old for Christmas 1942. And photos of war dead.
3/
I rang my stepdad. He says, you look after this for me.
I want to cry. So much trust. So much pain. And quite a burden just to look at.
I'm holding the past and the present in my hands.
The letter. From father to son.
So here's the war diary. The first and the last page. Most entries are signed like letters. Just in case it would be handed over to a widow, not a wife.
And here's the fanaticism, lies, fervent belief. I mean, that hand drawn 'wrong' swastika? Do you see it? What do you say?
Underneath: "From today, the Wehrmacht took over the protection of the Reich."
Below, I hesitate to say, pictures of Dunkirk. I mean, Dunkirk!!!

Remember Rees-Mogg's far-right German friends? (⬇️)
Last week, they asked parliament to appoint a 'Federal Commissioner for the Persecution of Christians'
Transparent & populist, their move prompted one of the best debates the Bundestag has seen in a while bbc.com/news/world-eur…
2/ One after the other, MPs from all parties rose to tell the AfD they are not Christian & neither embody nor defend any Christian values. That cynically they will invoke & use Christianity only when it serves to incite division, resentment & prejudice against Muslims & Jews.
3/
Down to the point & not mincing his words, here's @helgelindh's speech, uncovering the far-right's bigotry:
So my mum (who knows everything) has found this method of multiplying fresh #yeast, which many of you in the UK (& me during lockdown) have difficulties getting their hands on. Here's my test.
½ cube fresh yeast
15 gr sugar
100 ml water
100 gr wheat flour
Mix & let it rise until bubbly. Use any available baking form (or ice cube form, which I do not possess) & apportion. Tip: use a wet spoon, dip in water before every transfer (tested, works). Freeze.

Now we need to figure out how powerful that yeast is compared to the original and we will do that tomorrow. Stay with me.
THREAD
People feel the Olympics 2012 were a good time, because it was a time of joy, hope & community. A time to be proud of what everyone achieved, together. A time people actually *felt* the whole world respected them.
Now imagine someone had picked up that positive energy, ...
2/ enthusiasm & push to reform the country & better the nation, someone who drove & was driven by a spirit of purpose, empathy, equality. Can you see it?
Instead, what did we get? Anger, fury & hate, driving a wedge between people because of their income, skin colour, heritage.
3/ Negative energy & destruction. The dismantling of public services, the health system, education.
In all this time, the same party was in power. It went from patriotism to nationalism, from welcoming the world to capsizing refugee dinghies. From organising a celebration...
In the UK, it is perfectly acceptable (even expected) that newspapers endorse a party or candidate.
In Germany, this would be unacceptable & tarnish the publication's reputation. A newspaper's task (& everyone's expectation) is correct & unbiased reporting.
1/
Unbiased media is in a much stronger position to hold those in power accountable. Its reporting of domestic & international affairs carries weight & does not have to be breaking, investigative or controversial to merit publication. Opinion is confined to the comments section.
2/
In the UK, current rules allow owners & editors to weaponise print media for their own purpose. Lies & deceptions remain largely unchallenged & unsanctioned.
Yet, I don't believe regulating ownership is the answer. Domestic ownership, for example, doesn't guarantee neutrality.
