Today @AurumLinh & @Jonny_McCully launch their @mozilla project @AtlasLabHQ aimed at closing the knowledge gap between technology & law by building a resource for those working on the front lines of #AI & #humanrights #litigation 1/

atlaslab.org Image
The @AtlasLabHQ website consists of two guides, one that explains the process of creating #machinelearning systems & another that explains the process of challenging such systems through a #humanrights lawsuit 2/ Image
The first guide is a "no code" guide to building a #machinelearning system & provides a foundational understanding of the human decisions made during the development of a machine learning model, from defining a problem to deploying a model 3/ Image
“Automated decision-making plays a role in critical litigation around privacy, labor, migration, & other human rights issues. But too often, lawyers litigating crucial cases are under-resourced. There are too few educational resources to demystify AI systems.” @AurumLinh 4/ Image
The second guide breaks down the steps involved in taking a #humanrights case to #court, from spotting there is a problem to enforcing a decision, with a focus on how the development or use of automated systems might be challenged through #litigation 5/ Image
"Machine learning & similar technologies fuel decisions that have a significant impact on people's lives. Yet, accountability is scarce. We hope Atlas Lab can provide those looking to challenge these systems with foundational resources for impactful litigation." @Jonny_McCully 6/ Image
The website also includes a case studies section with summaries of some court decisions dealing with issues at the intersection of #humanrights & automated decision-making, from medical school admissions #algorithms to #FacialRecognition technologies: atlaslab.org/articles/categ… 7/ Image
This website is in no way complete, so if you notice anything that is incorrect or missing from the guides, please let us know!

We welcome any input that can help make the content of the site as useful and informative as possible

As well as @cyndoor + Justina Leston for their case study visuals.

They have brought the site to life! 10/
There are too many people who have (whether they know it or not) inspired & shaped the thinking behind this site. We take full responsibility for any mistakes or omissions but we are thankful for all the guidance, steering, input & feedback we have received during the project 11/
Particular thanks to those who gave feedback on a prototype in Feb 2020: Alan Dahi, Alexander Ottosson, @amytherose @AmosToh @annevk @antoin, Balázs Dénes, Bijan Moini, @danblah @dcabo, @EdSantos754 @EleChelioudakis, Erika Leonaitė, @chickpurchase @InfoFanny @hugoroyd 12/
Sándor Léderer, @TijmenWisman & @Zhulieta.

Also, thanks to @ContiCook @EkkerAnton @glennrodnyc Jeff Katz, Katherine Zhou @ochieljd @SweeLengHarris @smithsam for their input. 14/
We hope that these guides & case studies will be a useful resource for the future of #humanrights litigation challenging damaging & harmful machines & #AI. As we said above, we are open to feedback so please do get in touch! Image
