World Economic Forum: Global Risks Report 2021

Each year world leaders meet to assess and vote on global risks for the years ahead. This year they met in the middle a pandemic.

Leaders were asked to assess the *Likelihood* of risks, while also assessing the *Impact* of each global risk on a scale of 1 to 5.

1 representing a minimal impact and 5 a catastrophic impact.

They were also asked to consider the top 5 greatest risks over the next 10 years.

Top 3 risks for the decade ahead:

1: Climate Action Failure
2: Infectious Diseases
3: Livelihood Crises (poverty/food etc.)

The forum runs annually, and informs national policy and global strategy. You can see how perceptions of risks are changing.

Focusing investment on reactive measures such as treatments can no longer be considered viable economically. 12 months of a single infectious disease outbreak set economies back trillions of dollars.

More importantly - killed over 2 million people.

Women globally will have their careers set back a generation as social inequalities such as age, income, gender and race have increased due to these groups' lower resilience at the beginning of the pandemic.

It's clear that leaders now understand the threat of infectious diseases.
