As the Biden presidency begins and he’s moved to Washington, I want to say a word about his hometown, Wilmington. More than a word, actually, a thread...
Once mostly that quick train stop on our way north or south for many in the press corps on the infamous Acela corridor, Wilmington became a new home base for many over the past 10 months. And it’s a very friendly town...
The pride and appreciation for Biden and his family is legit. Introduce yourself to a local at a restaurant or store and they’re universally pleased to have you visit.
It is a city in the midst of a massive redevelopment, led especially by developer Rob Buccini, a close friend of the late Beau Biden who grew up knowing the new president as just another dad in the neighborhood. His firm is working on new riverfront and downtown buildings.
Biden’s home base to the outside world became The Queen, a downtown live music venue that wasn’t slated to have much business in 2020 after the pandemic. Instead it became the TV home of a president-elect. thequeenwilmington.com
Looking for eats in Wilmington? Buckley’s Tavern is a Biden family favorite: buckleystavern.com
A meeting out of the way breakfast spot that @RebeccaRKaplan came to love: I.M. Coffee, tucked away in the I.M. Pei Building: imcoffee1105.com (she went so often the workers knew her by name).
The Biden press corps may also have singlehandedly kept The Juice Joint thejuicejoint.de in business...
Ditto for and The Riverfront Bakery. The cinnamon roles, the quiche, the Americano. All just grand. riverfrontbakery.com
Finally, the @CBSNews team is indebted to @AAAMidAtlantic, which welcomed us with open arms and allowed us to use their building as our home for live reports for @CBSThisMorning and @CBSEveningNews. They understood that our presence was good for business and good for Delaware.
So, thank you again to the good folks of @cityofwilmde for hosting us during the transition. Thanks to Biden, it’s likely we’ll be back often.

“You must rise above red and blue, you must rise above black and white,” @garthbrooks says in response to a q about what he’d tell fans about his participation in the #BidenHarrisInauguration.
NEW @CBSNewsPoll: Americans today say the biggest threat comes from inside the country, from “other people in America, and domestic enemies.”
Americans are bracing for more political violence, not just in the next week at the inaugural (which most think is likely) but also over the coming years.
Just 6% of Americans describe democracy and rule of law in the U.S. as “very secure” and just 29% think it’s at least somewhat secure at all. The rest see it threatened.
BIDEN: "The idea that I shouldn't be out of office yesterday isn't the issue. The question is, what happens with 14 days left to go, or 13 days left to go?" (It's actually 12.)
Biden notes that President Trump says he won't show up for his inauguration: "One of the few things he and I have ever agreed on. It's a good thing him no showing up."
Why is it okay with Trump not showing up for the inauguration? Biden says: "Because... he's exceeded even my own worst notions about him. He's been an embarrassment to the country. ... Not worthy to hold the office."
JUST NOW: @JoeBiden, speaking in Delaware, decries today's "assault on the citadel of liberty."
@JoeBiden He calls today "an assault on the doing of the people's business." Adds later they "Do not reflect a true America. Do not represent who we are."
@JoeBiden Remarkable he has to say it, but Biden calls on the president to go on national television and call on the protesters to go home.
NEWS: @JoeBiden intends to nominate federal appeals court judge Merrick Garland to serve as U.S. attorney general, multiple people familiar tell me, @BoKnowsNews and @nancycordes.
@JoeBiden@BoKnowsNews@nancycordes Garland currently serves as chief judge on United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, considered to be the second-highest federal court in the country.
@JoeBiden@BoKnowsNews@nancycordes Garland, 68, was nominated by former president Barack Obama to the U.S. Supreme Court after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, but he was blocked from consideration by Republican senators.
