(THREAD) The recent cycle of violence in Darfur illustrates what IDPs and rights groups warned against. My take on the events @hrwhrw.org/news/2021/01/2…
/The UN moved forward with terminating the peacekeeping mission UNAMID end of 2020, despite mounting evidence on the uptick in intercommunal violence since last years: reports.unocha.org/en/country/sud…
/Before the end of 2020, IDPs in Darfur protested against UNAMID's departure, demanded their voices to be heard. Neither Sudan or #UNSC listened. Sudan failed the test of their own pledge and Darfuris continued to pay the price. hrw.org/news/2021/01/0….
/Attorney-General opened an investigation but a previous one in a similar attack in the area end of 2019 has so far not led to accountability. Int'l community should press on Sudan to avoid feckless moves and deliver justice to the people in Darfur. ohchr.org/en/newsevents/…
/ #Sudan also embark on needed security sector reform. Vulnerable communities in Darfur cannot trust gov't forces, with poor rights record, to do right by them hrw.org/news/2020/06/2…
/And all of these developments happen within the context that former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and two other Sudanese officials subject to ICC arrest warrants for crimes in #Darfur have never faced the court. Their needed surrender to the ICC remains outstanding.
