Much like Kamikaze candidates who do the dirty work for the real candidate, smears, dirty politics, spreading disinformation; we now have provincial and national Kamikaze political parties doing the dirty work for provincial and national conservatives.
A similar model is used in the US. It started with the Tea Party, and morphed into mainstream GOP. The worst conspiracy theorists becoming an offshoot called the Freedom Caucus.

That’s what Wexit is about. It masquerades as a separatist party, but provides cover to amplify toxic rhetoric to keep the most deluded firmly isolated in their echo chamber alternate reality.

The Maverick Party is a more extreme, more rancorous, and completely untethered to reality version.
Like the Freedom Caucus in the US, the Wexit & Buffalo parties in the prairies and the Manning Centre supported (now known as Canada Strong & Free) Maverick Party is meant to deliver an electoral win for conservatives, not divide the nation or the conservative vote.
It’s meant to move the narrative to dangerous and conspiratorial territory. Maverick will say what O’Toole (and Kenney, Moe and Pallister) won’t dare say because he will be excoriated and directly linked to Trump’s treachery and January 6, 2021.
Basically, Canadian conservatives are attempting to create the belief that O’Toole and his provincial counterparts are centre right, not radical paleolibertarians intending to install Christian religious, political and social policy domination.
Don’t laugh. It fooled a lot of Americans. It’s not all loopy nut bars who showed up to storm the Capitol. There were many respected conservative “patriotic” citizens who were lured with outrageous trickery and conspiracy theories repeated ad nauseam to join a coup.
Psychological manipulation is very effective on all levels of intelligence, education and self aware individuals. Because it doesn’t tap into your logic. It accesses your emotions.
