I don’t think this assumption is right, Seth. A second senate “acquittal” might not bar him from holding future office, but conviction in actual court, where he faces countless indictments from multiple state AG’s for his endless crimes would. You’ve documented those crimes.
The notion that GOP senators up for reelection in 2022 would vote once again to absolve a blatantly guilty man who cost them the senate, the house, the WH, and incited a seditious insurrection that directly put all their lives at risk seems questionable at best.
And even if they did, this does not grant him immunity from prosecution from his crimes committed at the state level throughout the past 4 years. A single conviction in any of those cases would preclude his ability to run in 2024.
Here’s a recap of those crimes for those of you not familiar with Seth’s books/feed: #ConvictAndDisqualifyTrump
Since @LindseyGrahamSC seems hellbent on redefining hypocrisy to protect Trump, let’s look back on what this man used to claim to believe about impeachment, SCOTUS appointments, witnesses at impeachment trials, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden BEFORE he was compromised (THREAD)
.@LindseyGrahamSC used to claim that defying subpoenas was an impeachable offense. Trump and the members of his administration have defied DOZENS of subpoenas since he took office.
.@LindseyGrahamSC used to claim that Donald Trump was “a kook” and “a xenophobic race-baiting religious bigot” who was “unfit to be President.”
Re: the claim that the senate cannot convict Trump once he is no longer President, this is incorrect. Removal is only one consequence of conviction. The other is being barred from ever holding office again. @steve_vladeck explains: #ConvictTrumpnytimes.com/2021/01/14/opi…
Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution states: “Judgment in cases of impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States” This is why Trump MUST be convicted.
Convicting Trump is a necessity not only because it bars him from ever seeking public office again, but also because it denies him the benefits that previous presidents otherwise receive, including a generous annual stipend, funds for offices and a staff, and a pension.
To those claiming “it’s not worth impeaching Trump again over his attack on the Capitol because:
1.) There isn’t time
2.) He’s leaving office soon anyway
3.) It will further divide the nation
Allow me to enlighten you as to why these arguments are COMPLETE & UTTER BULLSHIT
1.) Yes, there IS time. They rammed ACB onto SCOTUS in under a week. They can remove Trump in 10 days. But this misses the point that impeachment AND conviction of Trump is critical even if it drags out beyond January 20th because it prevents him from ever holding office again.
2.) His term being almost over is meaningless & does not grant him immunity from consequences for terrorism & sedition against the U.S. gov’t that lead to the death of 5 Americans. Clearly, he will stop at NOTHING to stay in power. EVERY SECOND HE REMAINS IN OFFICE ENDANGERS 🇺🇸
Sadly, the list of @SenateGOP and @HouseGOP traitors who’s IMMEDIATE EXPULSION is MANDATED by their actions this week and over the past 4 years is much longer than this. I’ve posted threads with all the names, including state AG’s. Let’s recap it, shall we?
It’s about 126 members of the @HouseGOP—although there are more that need to be added who came out later in support of Trump’s coup and continued with theirs after his failed—and EVERY SINGLE MEMBER of the @SenateGOP (no exceptions. NONE)
1.) Lynn Fitch — Mississippi
2.) Tim Fox — Montana
3.) Curtis T. Hill, Jr. — Indiana
4.) Mike Hunter — Oklahoma
5.) Jeff Landry — Louisiana
6.) Steve Marshall — Alabama
7.) Ashley Moody — Florida
8.) Patrick Morrisey — West Virginia
For anyone shocked that this administration would end in bloodshed, violence, and terrorism, you haven’t been paying attention. Here’s @maddow showcasing Trump’s deliberate incitement of violence at his rallies BEFORE EVEN BEING NOMINATED FOR POTUS IN 2016 #ImpeachTrumpAgainNOW
1.) Privately owned media platforms banning people who incite violence is not a 1st Amendment violation
2.) Impeaching & removing Trump will not “further divide the nation;” him remaining in office after attacking the U.S. Capitol and killing 5 people will embolden more violence
The people making the first argument don’t grasp that the 1st Amendment doesn’t grant you immunity from facing CONSEQUENCES for saying terrible things
The people making the second are the same ones who’ve been trying to overturn Biden’s legitimate victory for the past 2 months
This sums up why the “Trump’s free speech/1st Amendment rights are being violated by banning him from Twitter and Facebook” argument is complete NONSENSE perfectly:
